Whew, I'm glad my 96 wasn't this involved. Idk if its possible on yours but I was able to not remove the clutches to get mine out. It was very fiddly to get back on tho.

You nailed it when you said these machines are NOTORIOUS for consistant starter issues. Bad starter placement by polaris on the 90s models.

Yeah, I have removed the starter without taking the clutch apart but like you said it wasn't easy.

Apparently, starter placement was designed to maximize replacement frequency and dealer labor hours.
