@Grant Kendrick Will check it out, after I re-install my OS from scratch. Tired of all the problems of rolling updates, forced apps, and a one size fits all hardware, snaps, apps, and rest of the things pushing everyone into a google/apple/windows locked down system, with forced accounts, paywalls coming to all apps, flats, snaps in the near future. Seems with every update something breaks. Done with it. I have 2 desktops, two laptops all for different uses. Too much work to keep fixing. Thanks again.
Chris, thank you so much for ending my nightmare. I have been struggling with this problem for almost two years after watching tons and tons of videos without success. Now, I have done several projects in two weeks that I could not complete in two years. Again, thank you, and keep the videos coming.
My dude!!!! Thank you! I've spent the past hour and a half trying to figure this bullshit out and everywhere I looked had the same thing, with the entire image! You are a true hero
Thanks so much for this! Working on custom content backgrounds for sims 4 and could not figure out how to scale it without getting the wrong numbers over and over. 🙄 this video is a life saver.
Thanks so much. I've been struggling for hours yesterday and today trying to figure out how to do this and watching many videos on the topic. Yours was the first to note selecting "Layer" under "Transform" and that solved my problem.
Thank you! I literally downloaded GIMP for something as simple as adding a pin icon to a zoning map, and immediately fell into your second issue, where the it would scale the entire image as opposed to just the icon. This literally saved me what would probably have been a couple of hours of research trying to figure this out!!
Thank you! The scaling via click-and-drag is what I was trying to figure out. I use that in Canva and Paint all the time. It's just easier than trying to guess the amount of inches I need for height and width, or how many pixels I need. This was helpful. You get a like! 🙂
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. And you told how to do it succinctly without the unnecessary chatter found on too many 'how to' videos.
Thank you so much! This video spared me a lot of head banging. A well deserved thumbs up for you. There are so much functions in Gimp that are just not intuitive, like this one. You just can not figure this out from looking through the menus.
Chris, Thank You. I too was having issues figuring this out and trying to navigate Gimp since I'm so use to Photoshop. I don't have a count of how many UA-cam Video's I watched and still didn't get the answer that I needed. Apparently it's as simple as image scale vs layer scale, who knew? LOL!! Thank You so much for the helpful video tutorial. Cheers
Thank you so much for this video - my layer wouldn't scale and I couldn't understand why - and you solved it. Cheers - you explained it perfectly. Whew!
Nicely done! You can also right click on the image itself or the image layer in the panel to the right. 'Scale' is the term that was throwing me off instead of 'Resize' or similar.
i spend over an hour searching trying ... finaly i gave up and looked online not only to find 20 videos which show just something else ... this beeing the first video that actualy shows how :D now i feel just stupi its such a pain in the behind when you know photoshop by heart and you just expect things for basicly no reason ... anyway thanks for putting this video up
amazing thank you chris! congrats on your 1st tech video & being so helpful. creatives know how these little things can drive us & our workflow to insanity. simple is key!
Thank you so much! I’ve been struggling to work this out too! 🤔 After working in Photoshop for 25 years it feels awkward trying to learn a new program. Really appreciate this and looking forward to more videos with similar content! 🤩🤩
At 2:43 that confusion is partially due to poor naming conventions in Gimp. When I say I want to scale my specific image, that does not necessarily mean I want to scale my full canvas of images. But Gimp assumes that.
Cheers mate. Playing around with the ASUS mylogo option and wanted to do a custom image, figured I'd need two layers but was confused on how to make it look right.
Chris. I have been using this layer scale for watermark transparencies (.png) for several years, current running Gimp 2.10.18 on Linux and photoshop 2021 on Win10. The issue is loss of image quality when downsizing a layer in gimp, and no forum offers a solution that actually works. Photoshop maintains the quality of a downsized layer, but Gimp is easier to access for me as I am usually operating in the Linux OS. I suspect until gimp gets an update that fixes downsize quality, that there is no solution?
This works when I resize the layer by changing the pixel numbers, but not when I use the mouse to resize. I get the handles and the box will move but the image stays the same size and won't change. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey! I just installed the new gimp and I don't have all the tool options to the left that you do. I only have 16. you have all of them displayed it seems, how do I make them all appear ? Thanks :)
Awesome video bro!!!! I been looking at how to do this for weeks. And I ran into you. You explain it so simple and easy. Worked like a charm. Good video once again many thanks for your knowledge and sharing that
Thank you! I've been struggling with this for almost an hour! Really wish you could just click and drag the corner of the img like in Word or Paint lol.
How do I make an image to the 16+20 in Or 12+16 in. So basically using the inch format. And also what is the best file type for a large picture on the wall? Thank you
What if you want to resize the bounding box of the smaller image (maybe scale it up because you want to add a background color or something), but you want to keep the image that's on the layer the same size. So it doesn't scale up with the bounding box. How would you do that?
Thank you . One question I have and I'm trying to solve is by putting logo over my work I still have lines the (yellow lines from entire object ) left from logo that I'm trying to implement .. Any ideas ?
The advice is awesome but I’m running into a little trouble sizing 11x 17. When I input the measurements and press scale it turns the image microscopic can some tell me what I’m over looking?
Thanks for this, I'm an artist and most of the time I need to resize a photo of my painting to put onto my Etsy shop or website. I'm subbing and trying to learn to use Gimp. I can be technically challenged . LOL !
Thank you very much. I used to use Corel Photopaint. It suddenly stopped working on my computer. Even uninstall, reinstall failed to fix it. So, I am trying to learn Gimp. Thanks for the tip., much appreciated.
I apologize for asking an off topic question. what if you created a third layer, that has a smaller square shape inside of it, and that shape had a background color of red. How do we then tell Gimp to re-scale its layer boundary size to the size of that smaller red square (JUST FOR THAT LAYER, DON'T MESS WITH THE FULL CANVAS BOUNDARY SIZE)? This is drying me nuts. Does that make sense?
what about increasing the image size of an imported image with a lower value for x and y dimensions in pixels to a larger image? i dont see any discussion in any of these tutorial videos in that regard?
OK newbie and non technical person here. I want to make a A4 Size ready to print. What size would I do please in mm or inches etc. Any help would so be appreciated. TIA
THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART I COULD ONLY FIND VIDEOS MADE LIKE 3 YEARS AGO IVE BEEN TRYING TO DO THIS FOR 2 WEEKS
Same!
Same 😑
I have GIMP 2.10.30 and nowhere as many tools, do not have the tool he is using. How do I get it?
@Grant Kendrick Will check it out, after I re-install my OS from scratch. 3 years later and still the best tutorial i've seen. Thank you!

You absolute star. This has been driving me nuts for hours, and now I have your solution everything is done!
Great video - thank you. Who knew I had to click the layer icon under transform? Gimp is crazy.
What a god! I was trying to figure how to scale that layer without doing everything. Thank you sir!
didnt work for me for some reason
Thanks so much for this! Working on custom content backgrounds for sims 4 and could not figure out how to scale it without getting the wrong numbers over and over. 🙄 this video is a life saver.
Wish I'd seen this earlier, it has driven me nuts too but then I figured it thanks Chris, looking forward to more
Recently started learning how to use GIMP & had the same problem/frustration, this video is perfect - Thank You!
Chris Fowler, Is there a link to download the same photoshop program you have?
Thanks so much. I've been struggling for hours yesterday and today trying to figure out how to do this and watching many videos on the topic. Yours was the first to note selecting "Layer" under "Transform" and that solved my problem.
thanks you so much, i couldn't figure out how to stretch it without the whole scale changing so this helped alot
Thank you so much! I have watched so many tutorials that didn't show these easy steps. LEGEND!
Thank you! I literally downloaded GIMP for something as simple as adding a pin icon to a zoning map, and immediately fell into your second issue, where the it would scale the entire image as opposed to just the icon. This literally saved me what would probably have been a couple of hours of research trying to figure this out!!
Thank you for explaining this, your voice is so calming.
OMG I WAS TRYING TO DO A FNAF FAN GAME AND NEEDED TO REZISE THE OFFICE THANK YOU SO MUCH OMFG
Thank you! The scaling via click-and-drag is what I was trying to figure out. I use that in Canva and Paint all the time. It's just easier than trying to guess the amount of inches I need for height and width, or how many pixels I need. This was helpful. You get a like! 🙂
Life saver. Took an hours long process for me and made it a 4 minute one.
THANK you ❤️, I was trying to do that for hours and no video helped me, but this... Thanks 👍☺️
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I was looking for. And you told how to do it succinctly without the unnecessary chatter found on too many 'how to' videos.
Thank you so much! This video spared me a lot of head banging. A well deserved thumbs up for you.

DUDE! I love you man! Some of these other vids are POOP. Thank you for keeping it simple
thank you it is very helpful for my PT today!
Its with handy technique explanation like this one. Finally made my thumbnail for UA-cam video in 2hrs of installation of this software. THANKS!
Thank you. New programs are not that easy to learn while trying to "unlearn" Photoshop - old habits don't fade - and this was very helpful.
A simply 'WONDERFUL' video thanks Chris ... starting today to learn this after Photoshop for years ... one frustration less! Thankx
this is lovely, really solved my stress
Thank you Mr.Fowler you have a soothing voice
"Layer.. scale layer" Thank you for this! I was getting SO frustrated... ugh!!!
Chris, Thank You. I too was having issues figuring this out and trying to navigate Gimp since I'm so use to Photoshop. Thank you so much for this video - my layer wouldn't scale and I couldn't understand why - and you solved it. Cheers - you explained it perfectly. Whew!
Thank you so much! I was getting hung up on the lock and unlock feature. You're a life saver. Thanks for making it short and sweet!
Nicely done! You can also right click on the image itself or the image layer in the panel to the right. 'Scale' is the term that was throwing me off instead of 'Resize' or similar.
Thank you so much! You don't know how frustrated I was initially and you saved me the headache. God bless!
i spend over an hour searching trying ... finaly i gave up and looked online not only to find 20 videos which show just something else ... this beeing the first video that actualy shows how :D now i feel just stupi its such a pain in the behind when you know photoshop by heart and you just expect things for basicly no reason ... anyway thanks for putting this video up
That scale tool does not pop up on my screen.. Is there any solution for this?
amazing thank you chris! congrats on your 1st tech video & being so helpful. creatives know how these little things can drive us & our workflow to insanity. simple is key!

Life saver .. was driving me nuts .. and of course the answer is so simple .. once you know the answer. Thank you.
Man thanks that's what I was looking for. I could only resize the image but not the layer thanks very much again. I got you subscribed
At 2:43 that confusion is partially due to poor naming conventions in Gimp. When I say I want to scale my specific image, that does not necessarily mean I want to scale my full canvas of images. But Gimp assumes that.
Thank you for the useful video without any unnecessary fluff!
Finally somebody teaches deeply
The TIME that you have just saved me!! Thank you VERY much!
Thank you! Been trying to do this for the last hour and a half! I can go to bed now.
Cheers mate. Playing around with the ASUS mylogo option and wanted to do a custom image, figured I'd need two layers but was confused on how to make it look right.

Hey captain... thank you for this wonderful and easy tutorial
Very good told me exactly what I wanted to know in a concise manner unlike many a youtuber
Thanks for this video! I was wondering why BOTH width and height were changing instead of just one like I wanted. This really helped! 👍
perfect, got right to the point and solved my issue, Thanks Chris
How do you resize the layer canvas to the image if it's smaller? I don't want the extra transparent borders when exporting the image.
Thank you so much. That will save me buckets of time.
Big respect for this mate. Thank you.
Much appreciated this video... I was having the same issues you mentioned. Thank you!!!!
Chris. I have been using this layer scale for watermark transparencies (.png) for several years, current running Gimp 2.10.18 on Linux and photoshop 2021 on Win10. Thanks! Clear and concise. And a recent version of the software...
