Exactly! If he was indigenous or from any POC community he'd be in prison for life. And also if he wasn't kinda "cute" like Emma said and looked conventionally less "attractive" he would have gotten 3 FULL LIFE without any possibility of parole or potential release
And there are many people, especially indigenous people and people of color, who got full life sentences for way less than what he did, and this dude killed 3 members of his OWN family (one of them being premeditated for at least a month) over some stupid lies because he's a douche who can't take responsibility for the shitstorm he created himself, and could still have half of his life to live after prison just because he's "cute" and white (and I speak as a white girl, being 100% French)
      Make it make sense 😡

I have a story similar to this but luckily/sadly ends differently.
It’s been one month today since my husband took his own life. I was completely shocked, devastated and heartbroken. It has since come out that he had been lying about a plethora of things, mostly pertaining to finances. When it was all about to come out, rather than facing my disappointment in him (I would have forgiven him and come up with some kind of plan) he decided to take his own life.
Listen to this story makes me weirdly grateful for his choice. Obviously, he should have been honest to me and we could have moved forward. Conversely,
he could have taken myself and our 1 year old also.
Thank you for sharing this story. If nothing else it’s opened my eyes to the fact my situation could have been much worse.

I’ve no doubt that “pretty privilege” exists and is a widespread bias throughout the justice system. One thing I am curious about though…We often see ‘pretty privilege’ in action when it comes down to press coverage in regards to victims of crime (violent or otherwise). While all victims of crime are victims, regardless of social status or appearance, and should be treated equally, it can’t be denied that the press coverage for a case where, say, an upper class white individual is the victim will receive much wider (and often more sympathetic) coverage than a victim of a lower socioeconomic position or non-caucasian ethnicity.
But what happens when both the perpetrator AND the victims fit within the same category? The courts show a bias in a more severe conviction when the victims fit the upper class/caucasian/‘pretty’ template, except in cases where the perpetrator falls into the same category. So what causes the leniency to fall on the side of the perpetrator, vs on the side of the victim?
I’m not sure I’ve expressed my query in the best manner. Words aren’t my strong suite, especially at 4am (who’s are?) but I hope it makes enough sense.

    • @carlawinduss4665
      @carlawinduss4665 5 місяців тому

Totally agree . When privileged kill privileged, well one of them are not privileged anymore (mother and three brothers) so what happeneded to their privilege? Why didint their privilege out rank his leading to a stiff sentence ? I could understand if he had killed three minorities or lower classed but his own class? Personally in this case I think its just like what happens in Australia . It's just a weak pathetic justice system that recklessly thinks rehabilitation and soft approach betters society other than protecting and giving an example to society .

His choice. A cold blooded killer. His priviledged background offered ample opportunities and he ignored them creating his own evil opportunities. Poor girlfriend but what a lucky escape. The judge, once again, appear to drift through the cases and then perhaps just skim the records whilst the jury is out, or maybe they toss dice to get random numbers. How did he not get triple life sentences to run consecutively?

Sometimes I find myself screaming at the screen when I see other channels talk about true crime and fail to acknowledge or mention socio economic factors, issues and its implications. This allows the viewer to further contextualize maybe where society failed in preventing criminals from being held accountable LIKE this case. This is the Canadian justice system for you. Pretty privilege did play a part, but crimes like this happen with extremely lenient sentences all the time. It's disgusting. I know of a little girl who was assaulted and murdered by a man. He got 6 years and a new identity. It was in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. It was about 15 years ago. I never met either of them but her father drives a car with her face on it. A husband murdered his wife and 2 children. 15 years. I lived in their house after they died.

The fact that the parents had brought up 3 decent boys and the last one was a problem, speaks to me, that firstly, he might have been babied by his Mother, 'oh look, he is my last baby' type thing, which I think most people would agree with. However, when things started to go wrong for him, his parents should have stepped in. I know it is hard when you have grown up children, who state their views and opinions and what they want, but they must have known that his life was spiralling into debt with all the purchases he made. I have had grown up daughters living at home and I made sure they paid rent and were not in a position to run up debts. If you see a brand new car on the drive, red flag. I would have been on them straightaway, ridiculous, how did his parents think that he could afford it on a painter's salary. I am not disrespecting painters, they are very worth and very NECESSARY in our society, but as Emma says, they tend to be poorly paid unfortunately. So, parents, wake up, did they wake up, what happened?

Sounds like your borderline victim blaming here. He was a pathological liar who lied to everyone. Just to make himself look better than he really was. He was a loser! Who thought he deserved the same trappings of wealth that his family members had even though he didn't earn them. He maybe was spoilt but he was the youngest so that's normal. His ego turned him into a thief & murderer.✌🏼

@@lornadouglas9893 The youngest siblings are always privlidged lol. Its not the parents fault though especially in this case. He chose his route. He could have learned from the 7 robberies that he did and the consequences, losing job after job but he did not learn from that and proceeded to murder his entire family. Sentences need to be more strict in canada.

Hi welcome to the canadian judicial system. Bernardo, you do realize his partner in crime. Karla was given the dream deal of a century. And when they found out she lied when they found the videos they did not renegade. They gave it tour she's out for years. Change your name got married had kids. No lives on some tropical island because people were gonna kill her. 12 years in a minimum security present that is a WTF

Totally agree this man is a monster. He sentences in both courts were much too light, probably down to his look and class.
I will just add that I didn’t have you down as a race bater Emma, you’re smarter than that.
