This great song was soooo popular then it was selling 80 thousand copies a day!! True story. The cool groovy sounds were made by a Musitron an early instrument developed for this song then later became the synthesizer. Loved this 61 years ago still love it!!!
Nice one! This US Billboard #1 song was a monster hit in 1961 and is well known internationally. One of the best dance songs of all time. I was a young preteen at the time. My first 45 record purchase-wore it out on my simple record player! Try "Keep Seachin" really showcases his falseto and interesting music effects on his voice.
The interesting keyboard instrument was a Musitron early version of the synthesizer. I loved this song back then, still do. Very upbeat, catchy. He had a few other good songs but none to the popularity of this. At first it was selling 80,000 copies a day at its peak, a true story.
"Runaway" is Del Shannon's biggest hit from 1961 but he had a lot more great songs such as "Hats Off To Larry", "Little Town Flirt", "From Me To You", "Two Kinds Of Teardrops", "Keep Searchin'", "Stranger In Town" etc.
Great Reaction! Thanks Sassy. if you're going in this era, how about The Reflections "Just Like Romeo And Juliet" which came out just about the same time as The Beatles were hitting our shore. Then we were moving towards the British Invasion after that.
This is one of the greatest upbeat songs ever! I'm listening to it 60 years and Love it! I suggest watching the movie American Graffiti was out in 73. Had many great upbeat timeless songs. A few upcoming actors who did very very well later. Ron Howard ( Happy Days), Cindy Williams ( Laverne and Shirley) and Rick Dreyfuss great actor, producer. I believe u will 'dig it" as the Beatniks said in the early 60s. Ahahaha 😀
I've got the original Runaway single. (My dad was a great friend of Dels & got every one of his albums signed). Max Crook who co-wrote the song invented the instrument called the musitron that you can here on a lot of Dels songs. Del Shannon is a true Rock n Roll legend
A pure time , Del Shannon, Elvis, Bobby Vee, Bobby Rydel , Roy Orbison , Connie Francis, Doris.day .Id go back to that.time without blinking .It.be nice to take my pension with me ❤.
It's ironic that you've mentioned Frankie Valli, but Del Shannon appeared on the music scene a year before the 4 Seasons did. Lou Christie, Jan and Dean, and the Beach Boys were influenced by Del Shannon. He was known as Mr Falsetto because no one could sing like that. Del said he learned singing in that matter by listening to the way Blacks would sing. Being a White Man he sounded totally different because other White artists were influenced by him. At the Hi-Low Club in Battle Creek, Michigan it was a Black DJ that discovered Del Shannon. Demo tapes were taken to Big Top Records and a record deal was signed. One of those demo tapes happened to be Runaway.
React to Tom Petty song Running Down A Dream, starts him saying Me and Del were singing Runaway...they were friends, Tom looked upped to him. A great song.
......................amazing for 1961, a number one hit 63 years ago !
Love this song!

Thanks for the all the songs Dagmar 🤗
@@SassyOcampo Keep in mind that "FROM ME TO YOU" was a cover Del did of a BEATLES song, BEFORE they got to the U.S. in Feb of 1964
@@patticrichton1135 He also did a great cover of Dion's "Runaround Sue." Only problem was, it sounded almost exactly like Dion singing it.
First time I heard this song was in the movie 'American Graffiti'. I loved it & Del since then!
Yeah, I was around. That means I’m really old!😊 Loved this song. Takes me back to dances in the gym.
You’re not old Jane 🤗
You and me, Jane 😅
I was around.it was one the great ones when I was a high school senior in 1961.
It's also heard on the old NBC crime drama " Crime Story " .
Great Reaction! Thanks Sassy. if you're going in this era, how about The Reflections "Just Like Romeo And Juliet" which came out just about the same time as The Beatles were hitting our shore. Then we were moving towards the British Invasion after that.

The dance the girls in the circle around Del are doing "THE PONY"
If you want to see "The Pony" look up Chubby Checker's "It's Pony Time" with the two couples and him dancing it .
Elvis Presley does a great cover when he did it live on the LP Elvis on Stage from 1970.
