No, he actually DID go to the exam!! he just finished it before everyone else ^^ He was just off-screeb for the entirety of the arc, but if you remember, Kagaya Ubuyashiki hinted at his presence when his crow(I think it was his-) told him the results of the selection, in what would be this episode is canon, "Episode 5: My Own Steel" :) oh, and zenitsu mentioned something about hearing him at the final selection, but I can't remember the exact quote/episode rn 😭💔
