    STORYLINE:
Poles in the southern Polish town of Krakow, where Pope John Paul II once served as bishop and cardinal, mourned his death on Saturday night.
The Wawel Castle's Zygmunt bell rang across the city to signal his passing.
Weeping mourners gathered beside the Bishop's Office in Krakow, where the pope once lived, and bowed their heads in prayer.
The pope is deeply loved in mainly Roman Catholic Poland, where his 26-year pontificate has served as a source of great national pride.
Most popes in recent centuries have been buried in the St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican.
John Paul's wishes have not been made public and many in Poland are speculating he may be laid to rest alongside Polish kings in Krakow's Wawel Cathedral.
Meanwhile, in the pope's hometown of Wadowice, people wept at the news that the pontiff had died.
Many of them learnt of his death at the end of a special Mass in the church where John Paul II worshipped as a boy.

I am a random polish guy. I was young boy when the Pope died. But I remember well this day. Also I knew well our pope, I knew who he was and very often he was in TV. After his death, I was crying like an animal. He was like my beloved grandfather. From perspective of time, it was phenomenal experience. I was crying, TV was crying, everybody around me was crying, people on the streets were crying. Also people in many countries were crying. You know, I am pretty sure that the God saw this pure sadness which triumphed. All of this was not only sad but also very beautiful. Moreover, how beautiful was God's decision that in the year 2000, so 2000 years after the death of Jesus, human nation had such a Great Pope who was mourned after his death with such beautiful sadness. I dont know if such event will be ever possible again that whole planet will be crying like was crying after John's Paul the II death.... .

A few years before his election, Albino Luciani, future Pope John Paul I. wrote about his successors country: I am convinced that Poland has a duty, we are going to hear a lot from that country, that venerates the Madonna so much, in the upcoming years.

I hear Polish people are very well respected due to tragic events or someone who passed. They stop whatever they were doing, crowded around and remain silent to remember the victims/deceased.
