Fairness and taxes are quite hard to reconcile since these are intrinsically opposite terms.

Fairness should also include the concept that you don't keep changing tax and economic policy. Stability is an aspect of "fairness".

I think that every aspect of the tax code which is intended to advance a policy other than revenue generation is, by definition, unfair because it treats different taxpayers differently. Thus, every tax deduction creates unfairness, especially since a tax code without deductions would have a lower tax rate. Those who qualify for fewer deductions pay tax at a higher rate than would have been the case if the structure of the tax code didn't include deductions.

5 dollars per person a year. Eventually reduced to 0 dollars.

Indirect taxes, like VAT or sales, aren't normally applied to essential items and so the fairness argument for these taxes are that buying more non-essential item, like booze or watches, means your choosing to pay more indirect taxes. Highlights how fairness can be argued many ways and is subjective.

Two wolves and a sheep deciding what is for dinner. Define what is “fair” first and who gets to decide?

tl;dr "fair" is entirely subjective and we need to prioritize other measurements; if we're going to seek "fair", we should seek a high level of agreement like 2/3 or 3/4.

This should be taught in high school so that demagogues cannot cheat.

Taxation is extortion. There is no such thing as a "fair tax code". All justifications for taxation boil down to "we need the money for X", to which the only sane answer can be "cool motive, bro, still theft". Only when taxation is consented to BY EVERY INDIVIDUAL paying tax, in the absence of coercion, does tax become legitimate.

How about a tax system that maximizes revenues to the government over the long run?

No, it's easy if you believe in both liberty and equal protection under the law. There's no idea of "fairness" in the US Constitution. You need to have one tax rate that applies to all without special interest exemptions and deductions and credits. Then you set this rate based on the sum of the rate set for each Spending Bill and that spending is then limited by the amount actually collected.

Liberty and happiness could easily fall under the umbrella of fairness and the one problem with your thinking is that from how you say it the belief system is that the United States is the only country on the planet. When you push higher tax rates with zero special interest American corporations are going to invest elsewhere outside of the United States and our economy will suffer as a result since we live in a global market.

Republicans: We want to levy a tax rate on 25% on labor income, 15% on interest/investment income, and 7% tax on billionaires, and 0% on large corporations.
Why doesn't anyone want to work? We can't figure it out... sheeshh
