You have no idea how useful this is. I really respect that you gave some of your precious time to give us aspiring filmmakers advice. Really appreciate it.
This is the most practical advice I have have seen in a while. Everyone has their different approach to the process. The most useful ones for me are research and live with a character for a while before writing.
I love ALL of these great artist advice. I use most of them, but what I enjoy most is surprise. I just completed a screenplay where the villain, whom I had preconceived sort of a monster in the becomes a hero and is redeemed. This is the best feeling to go through as a writer who is also is an audience enjoying the actual film on screen. Thanks BAFTA.
Jorge Prieto like Darth Vader. Pretty awesome! Good luck with your screen play.
If ever a film is made that features the making of The Dark Knight, Stanley Tucci needs to play David S. Goyer. Love this series.
True, I thought that was him in the thumbnail
This is excellent ! Very very interesting to hear and.....well.....frankly...gives me a slight touch of confidence.
This is fantastic advice! Thank you!
This is awesome info..just getting over a writers block and this is giving me so much life....thank u
Harleen Quinzel Hey. Have u come over your writers block and wrote anything. Wish u good writing:)
Love this channel. Keep posting these morsels, please!
Very good video. Thanks.
Bravo!
Great video. Really informative, and good to know what it takes to cut it with writing. =)
Very informative series. As I am attempting to become a screenwriter, I find that I agree with the idea that characters must be allowed to "speak" to you so that you know what they'll do in your script. I don't believe that as a 'writer', I should force a character to do what I want them to do so that they'll fit into my plot outline. Interesting characters should bloom of their own uniqueness and personality which adds a rich credibility to your story.
Does that make sense?
Of course my dear. And through the writing a hundred little things about them will add on to their basic function within the story. Like the way they have to scrape the nutty flakes off a dessert. Or how they come across rather smarmy at times when the conversation turns to foxhunting. Attack the blank canvas with courage I say. Your inner voice knows from day one whether it's quality or not.
Good content.
Are the lectures available as a podcast yet?
From what I understand, his writing process is he takes a job writing a sequel/adaptation of something, he half-asses the process is getting to know/understand that source material, thinks that's good enough, and then starts writing away.
👌
Sometimes I just write and other times I don't
At 04:35 I assume he's talking about Tim and Kit Kat
David Goyer at 7.19 "the easier it becomes to write..." - The fact is that (for most people who care about it) writing is easy - getting anyone else to take notice? That's the gift.
That guy had Clint Eastwood voice!
David s. Goyer , are you Stanley Tucci?
Does drinking help?
1. Research 20-30 books
Go look at David S. Goyer's track record on RT and tell me he's a good writer.
Heinrich Joubert Blade 2? Dark Knight? I wish I could scoff so easily at those achievements.
@@robgoren8628 *cough* Batman v Superman *cough* Blade Trinity *cough* Crow City of Angels *cough* Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance *cough* sorry i had some bad movies lodged in my throat. Btw you cant really credit him with the story of The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight's story is from Batman: The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke.
@@dr.s8972 nah
@@robgoren8628 He barely had involvement in The Dark Knight, he helped with the overall story and had no involvement in the screenplay. His most notorious writing credits go to Batman v Superman, Man of Steel, and the Blade trilogy.
@@TechnologicallyTechnical Blade 1 and 2 are well-written films.
1:13 isn't that Clint Eastwood voice?
Wow, 20 seconds in and he's already said one of the main reasons science fiction never made it onto the screen in its full glory. "research; even if it's a science fiction film"
Science fiction has never made it to the screen in its full glory? What about Solaris, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Back To The Future, Alien, Blade Runner, District 9, Inception and Empire Strikes Back (although you could argue Star Wars isn't science fiction).
Nicholas Ntaganda Have you read Philip K Dick? Asimov? Frank Herbert? Yeah, those are 6 great movies, but they're not SF in it's full glory. It would have gotten there if it wasn't for Star Wars.
+My Autobiography A Fanfic We'll just have to agree to disagree then. And by the way I've only read Dune and a few of Asimov's works. Still haven't gotten around to Phillip K. Dick, although I've been meaning to read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" for years.
Nicholas Ntaganda Read Ubik.
+My Autobiography A Fanfic I'll check It out, thanks for the suggestion
David Goyer is George Clooney O_o #wakeupamerica
They don't write, they just relax. That's a good excuse to get paid doing jack shit.
