Imagine if you protect bandits, murderers, drug dealers because they had a difficult life. They even had, but what led them to where they are wasn't the difficult life, it was the choices they made due to the difficult life.

The interesting thing is that this movie is based on real events.
In the first decade of 2000 the militias grew a lot in Rio de Janeiro, before Rio de Janeiro was divided into 3 factions: Comando Vermelho (Red Command), Amigos dos Amigos(Friends of Friends) and Terceiro Comando (Third Command). However, the militias began to expand very quickly, as it was formed by: Police, military, firefighters and politicians.
In a short time, the entire West Zone of Rio de Janeiro was under the power of the militias.
In the beginning, the militias prohibited the use of drugs in areas dominated by them, and profited from clandestine services such as: internet, cable TV, gas, transportation and others. She prohibited the sale of drugs to weaken the factions, and because the local population saw this with good eyes, but this sympathy was short-lived, as the population soon saw that "the militia" was equal to or even worse than the factions. Over time, the militias also started to sell drugs.
A deputy, from Rio de Janeiro, from the Socialist PSOL party, called Freixo, who had a brother killed by the militia when he was young, fought a war against the militias and managed to open a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) in Rio de Janeiro, to to investigate the involvement of politicians with the militia, the character Deputado Fraga was inspired by Deputado Freixo.
But, of course, in real life, Freixo does not have a relationship with Captain Nascimento's wife.
Captain Nasciomento is also based on a real-life BOPE captain. However, in the issue of the militias, this captain had no involvement in real life.
The presenter who dances on TV was also inspired by real life. In Brazil there is a sensationalist newspaper that explores a lot of urban violence in order to influence politically - called: Balanço Geral - from TV Record. There was a presenter named Wagner Montes, who was a former police officer, who did the same little dances and had the same police exaltation speech as the character in the film - Fortunato.
However, despite some suspicions, it was never proven that this person was involved with the militia.
In the movie he goes to prison, in real life nobody knows if he was a militia member or not.

Hey there again, I'll try answering some of your questions.
1:42 - Yes, that's Nascimento's son. He had a internship with Fraga, his mother's new husband (and Nascimento's political nemesis).
2:27 - The movie tried to communicate how the police can distort things in the reports, using some criminal law knowhow. In brazillian law, majority age is 18 across the country (our state law differs minimally from one another, unlike in the USA). Minors have a separate law for crimes and demeanors, however, for some crimes they are treated as adults as long as they are 16 or older.
So the girl allegedly had 100g of pot. In Brazil, up to 23g is what can be carried for self use (therefore, a DRUG USER, at most a misdemeanor). When the police said she had 100g, they were already shooting for a DRUG DEALING charge, which is a full fledged felony.
The scene has a few misconceptions, though: Nascimento says that the officer (Barata) was supposedly corrupting a minor (CORRUPÇÃO DE MENORES), the article 218 felony from brazillian's penal code, which is deadwrong. Corrupting minors involve, basically seducing a minor to do something that satisfies a sexual desire even if it doesn't involve physical contact... if sex occurs it's another crime entirely: "Estupro de Vulnerável" (the raping of a vulnerable person).
4:10 - That's one of the most hotly debated themes in brazillian's civil law: Family. It's almost always guaranteed that the children will stay with their mother in a divorce. The judges and the jurisprudence heavily favors the mother, unless she represents harm to the child in some manner AND the father is a "respected" figure. The minor rarely has a say in this, too: the mother CAN ALLOW the children to choose, but if she stands her ground, that's it: no excuses.
5:20 - brazillian corruption is the same as anywhere in the world: The scumbags have their thing going on... when new blood shows up they quickly make sure he will be either with them or dealt with. Once the guy has something on him, he can't go back (snitching, denouncing to the cops) without getting arrested as well. I believe you know how snitchers get treated, it's no different in brazillian facilities.
If, however, the guy decides to be the righteous one, he's usually blackmailed, threatened or worse until breaking point. When a guy like this gets in a place where mostly everyone is corrupt, he can either bend the knee or lose it, you know.
12:15 - There are dealers all around, but in Rio de Janeiro crime is pretty organized. I don't live there, but everyone knows some dealers turn favelas in true feuds: dude has his hand and his pocket involved in everything that comes in and goes out. Heavy weaponry, drugs and money... They have their own lawyers, medical personnel and accountants (people ordered to learn these crafts by the dealers to serve their community).
It's a sort of a toxic family relationship: they torture and violently kill whoever's working against them or helping the police... but mostly protect the people who live in their area. Not out of fondness, of course: even a poor person can be an asset. Some schemes are so intricate and deep you wouldn't believe it: Politicians and police get involved... sometimes when one drug lord is losing territory, they are the ones that get help because the equilibrium is necessary.
It's all about money, more so than power. If the police starts pushing too much, arm the dealers better, discharge some officers... dealers get too big and rich, allow one police operation to seize lots of guns, money and drugs.
32:10 - by the time he beat the shit out of the Governor he already had a BOPE dettachment with him (undercover). Yeah, he was waiting for the ambush to flush out the scumbags.

2:27: the corruption charge is directed towards the girl from Fraga's office which was caught with Rafael. Not Barata. The pot was hers, and by getting caught with a minor, she was corrupting him

    • @samukgarcia
      @samukgarcia Рік тому +24

The militias are a very complex ecossystem. First, we got former members of security forces(cops, firefighters, military...). Now, they evolved and members that left CV and ADA, becoming "independent" also are militias. The next step now is the "Novo Cangaço" that is a much more violent group seizing smal cities to attack banks. They have a much better tactic skill and more modern weaponry. The most interesting part is that the "men" forming those terrorist groups, is that mostly of'em are doctors, engineers, lawyers and people who have no real need for money. They do mostly because they are adrenaline junkies(and with serious moral flaws). In each attack, they block poice stations, use bystanders as human shields and even use IEDs as traps against police.

This movie counts a history of the years 2003 to 2006, so it was a more than 15 years ago.
After that many things happened in Rio. Pacificator Police Unities (UPPs), Enforcements against the criminals, Panamerican Games in 2007, FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Olympic Games in 2016. After the enforcements against criminals that happened before the Olympics, people started looking to the police of another viewpoint. Before that cops were not proud and people didn't like cops but now it changed a little bit.
But anyway, Brazil is very big country and there are differences between the regions and states.
When I was in Mexico people said if you have a problem with the cops you pay 200 pesos to them and that's solved. In Brazil, most part of the places this is not advisable. Here in my state (Goias) or in Brasilia (Federal District) or many other places you have a great chance of going to the jail if you offer a pay off to a police officer.
Rio de Janeiro is a place in Brazil that was very rich in the past and had many companies, factories, banks and tourism but it started declining because of bad administrations. The violence grew up with the administration of Brizola. He was a Comunist and in his government he didn't let the police work in the slums. So the Red Comand that was the result of Drug Dealers meeting with Comunist Terrorists in Ilha Grande jail. Then the Red Comand divided into the Friend of Friends and then the Third Comand appeared and they started fighting against themselves in the slums because the police couldn't get into there.
So after 8 years of Brizola's government the bandits were using war arsenal, better than the police guns, so none police officer wanted to go fight them.

brother lately the militia has grown a lot in rio de janeiro, this is too bad, because the militiamen charge absurd fees from the residents of the favela that they end up occupying with the help of the police, in rio de janeiro there is war every day (exchange of shots), Commando red against militiamen, many times the police end up helping the militia to invade the favela of the red command, but that's it, brother dies one, there are 10 more to enter the place.
Incredible as it may seem, when the red command takes over the favelas that are under militia control, the population is grateful, because they will not suffer being extorted by militiamen.

Love your reaction to this movie and the way you stand your ground and do not negotiate your morals to justify the character's actions because that's exactly what the movie pushes you to do, it puts you in uncomfortable places all the time but while making their characters so human, so flawed. Good job

The first Elite Squad was inspired by a book from author Rodrigo Pimentel, former BOPE officer and the "Real Capt. Nascimento". The second one is a original history, but with Pimentel´s consulting too.
In the first movie the problem (The system) was the drug dealers and organized crime in the city. The second one make it clear: the problem (The "system") is named Brazil.
Rodrigo Pimentel left BOPE almost 20 years ago and now is a writer and speaker. A very smart person, with a rare vision of our country. And more humanized than their movie version, but still badass. Elite Squad 1 and 2 make our cinema industry proud, even showing in our face our corruption problems.
Thanks for watching and keep looking for Brazilian movies. "Central do Brasil" and "Cidade de Deus (City of God)" are masterpieces too.
