Thanks Dave. Have enjoyed this one for its razor sharp percussion, beautiful playing and recording quality. Noseda has just released another Prok 5. Listened to it on streaming. It has some nice touches but there is something about the first movement percussion that is weird (isn’t there usually?) Would love to hear your comments.
Could you please do a music chat about how, when listening to a recording, one can distinguish which features (good or bad!) to attribute to the players and which to the conductor?
The players play the way the conductor tells them to. They're instrumentalists following his interpretation of the work. The greatness from them comes from their great technically ability to be able to commucate his ideas at the highest level
If the first movement is boring, it sours me on the whole work. I just kept saying to myself, this is so boring! There's no fire in that first movement. Sure they play beautifully but I kept wanting something to happen, and it didn't. Yanchich is such a wimp on the timp.
As I listened to your comments about this performance, it reminded me of the Maazel CO recording.......which you mention! A great performance of the last 3 movements by Maazel,, unfortunately the 1st movement is truly bizarre! The Szell CO performance is ruined by the fact that Szell tries to break the speed record in this piece. A shame, since the Cleveland Orchestra is a great Prokofiev orchestra!

What is the most recent recording of this that aces the whole thing?
Dave. Would you comment on this performance vs the szell performance with the same orchestra as if my memory serves you did not like
This one is better.

Not to mention that Szell makes alterations to the orchestration.
