- In this video I’m finishing a NOS Iwasaki Tamahagane straight razor for the customer.
All NOS Iwasaki razors come “shave ready”, but the factory edge can always be improved for sharpness and for a more comfortable shave.
The customer`s preference was a Japanese Natural Whetstone feeling so I`m using the finest stone from Nakayama mine, the Nakayama Maruka!
Some Tamahagane razors, like this one, have a very hard steel and even with this Maruka, which has an excellent cutting power, takes longer than a usual razor would take to be honed.

That razor is insane. I see those listed as high as 5k on eBay. If I ever hit the lottery….
Mostly Japanese mysticism.
I wish I could strop like this! You are so fast and skilled at razor stropping. If I tried to do this, I would have a massively chopped up strop
Thank you!
With time it has become very natural.
Awesome stone, I wish I had the same one or a very similar one. Thanks for posting the video.
Thank you for watching!
It’s a 5+++ fineness. The highest level a Jnat can reach.
@@ZenRazorJapan please, could you tell me if the stone of the video is still available?
Looks like a really nice finishing stone indeed. 👍🙂

Oh my!! Gorgeous
Thank you Gregory!
So nice!
Thank you Davide!
A couple of questions:
The Tomo you used Is from the Maruka?
During honing, you don't add water or thin the slurry... Do you finish with a thicker slurry than when you started. That's a bit confusing to me, as i always di the opposite way (i.e. dense -> light or thick -> thin). Can you tell me more about?
Thanks
Hi Donald,
Yes, it is a Maruka nagura on a Maruka base stone. I matched them by fineness.
I do the same most of the times too, normally I spray some water to thin the slurry to the end. Here I felt that I almost finished so I only reduced a little the pressure and I kept it a little more until the end. I knew that it can’t affect much the edge because the steel is crazy hard.
Thanks for watching!
@@ZenRazorJapan thanks! 👍
@@donaldmcdonald9546 You are welcome!
随分と珍しいものをお持ちですね。
What nagura have you used?
It is a splinter of Nakayama Maruka that I had around. I always match the base stone with the tomo.
The results are spectacular when you match Maruka base stone with Maruka tomo.
Unfortunately I couldn’t show that here because the Tamahagane was too hard and I stopped for the hanging hair test too early. But I will make another video when I have some time.
Meserie. Tot respectul!
Mersi! 🙏🏻
Salut! Cat vrei pe el? Mă interesează.
Salut! A fost vandut.
What kind of water do you use to hone with?
Just normal tap water.
