This is about a guy/kid who finds out he is gay, and to come out he has to 'kill' his old self, his old straight self. That is the 'man' he kills. Its probably the greatest rock song of all time. It indeed is a journey, not a song.

I have seen Queen many times, I was at Live Aid 1985 and it was monumental and if you weren't a Queen fan when you arrived you definitely left as one. I was also at Knebworth in a crowd of 150,000 when Freddie and Queen flew over us in a helicopter and then when they came on stage it was spine chilling and I'll never forget seeing them, he is a LEGEND and always will be, he's my hero from being aged 16 (how old I was at Live Aid) and 17 (when I saw them at Knebworth) I'm 50 now and still love him to this day, RIP Freddie xxxxxxxxx

I feel like Queen were MY era, I grew up with them and loved this song, Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites the Dust and We are the Champions ever since I was a kid, explored them further and started to appreciate their live performances from the age of about 13/14 whilst my friends were into the late 1990s boybands. Welcome to Queendom. :) Lead guitar is Dr. Brian May (astrophysicist on the side, when he's not making music) who's absolutely awesome, one of the most underrated guitarists in the business. He's still touring, and still rocking the fuck out of stadiums all over the world. He also does backup vocals, and sometimes sings lead, as in "Who Wants to Live Forever." For future reference, please don't cut in the middle of a Brian May guitar solo. :(
Roger Taylor on drums, and he also did the ultra-high vocals -- the "Galileo" parts here, frex., and any other bits where they need someone's voice to bounce off the ceiling. Freddie's said to have had a four-octave range, and his vocals are completely incredible, but Roger's falsetto went higher, so he did those bits. Check out the last couple of minutes of "Somebody to Love," live version in Montreal in '81, where Freddie's playing around with the vocals while Roger keeps everything on time with a core of background singing. It's also just an amazing performance.
John Deacon on bass. He sometimes sang backup, but didn't like his voice and did as little singing as possible. He was a great bassist, though, and wrote one of the most iconic bass riffs on the planet -- watch "Under Pressure" for that one. Vanilla Ice stole it -- not sampled, STOLE, tried to argue it was his, lost in court -- so a lot of younger people know it. Watch the live at Wembley in '86 version, 'cause it rocks, and also is a great example of Freddie's control of the crowd; it starts with almost 2.5 minutes of Freddie basically doing warm-up vocals, with the crowd following along. :) He was known for the call-and-response thing, and the fans loved it.
About seeing this live, this is actually one of the few Queen songs where the studio version is better. Seeing Queen live is always awesome (I never saw them in concert :( but watching studio vids versus live recordings from concerts.) This song is heavily engineered, with a lot of layering effects. As J Williams said, the opening a cappella part is actually Freddie harmonizing with himself, and the operatic section is also seriously layered. You can't do that live. When Queen performed this live, they skipped the a cappella intro, and when the operatic part came up, they all left the stage while a recording played. They didn't want anyone to think they were lip synching, or trying to fool anyone about it being them versus a recording.
The studio version of "Somebody to Love" is also layered, and is definitely worth watching, along with the Montreal version. I like them both equally, for different reasons. This song has a heavy gospel feel; it's Freddie's tribute to Aretha Franklin. The layered background vocals are part of that -- like someone singing in church with a choir behind them -- and again, they can't do that live. What they do instead in Montreal, and at other concerts, is great, but the studio version, with Freddie singing back-up as well as lead, is worth a watch.
And one of their best performances was their Live Aid set. Yes, it's 20 minutes long, but if you react to it, we'll show up and watch with you. :) It's freaking awesome, and they basically saved the even, which had been fairly ordinary up to that point, and wasn't bringing in much money until Queen went on. Queen stole the show, and you should give it a watch.
They have a huge and awesome discography, so settle in and have fun. :D

freddie actually never told what the song was about, but some people think it's about him being gay. He came from a conservative and religious home. So the song is about him saying goodbye to old freddie and becomes new free freddie.

I very much agree, after all,he was a "straight guy" in a rock band, career suicide in the early 70's to be anything but straight, for me,the line"put a gun to his head, pulled MY trigger now he's dead" that's the goodbye to the old Freddie,
But more interesting is another song,it's only short, but with hindsight is a very telling song, regarding freddies sexuality, lilly of the valley, it sounds lije the start of the leading of a double life, especially the line "the lilly of the valley, doesn't know"
With queen there are so many interpretations of songs written by Freddie, but theyre all great

The strongest version today is the one that speaks of a boy who made an agreement with the devil. It doesn't necessarily have to be Freddie, but a story invented by him. That version can explain the 7 acts of the song. I don't think he talked about showing his homosexuality to the world when he never hid it, he didn't need to make a song to prove it, it was obvious, and more so considering the time. But of course, you will never know since he never told you, although I suspect Mary Austin knows. the meaning of the song will also be taken to the grave anyway unfortunately.
      (Sorry for bad english)

Sebastian Navarro it's possible. Freddie once said that he always left his songs open to free interpretation. But when i hear it i think he tells his mother that he is no longer the Freddie she knows. That he is accountable religiously or with his inner conflict and it ends with him finally being himself.
But sometimes you hear what you want to hear 🤷🏽‍♀️☺️
He loved opera and theater, so he's always pretty dramatic. which I LOVE about him

Great reaction! Queen were brilliant at harmonies. It's rare to find a Queen song without them. The band themselves even said that they were very lucky to find 3 voices that worked so well together. One of the best examples of their harmonies is in Somebody to Love, which is a beautiful track.

Please do MORE QUEEN! Try to use the live versions when possible. For Freddie's piano skills, watch My Melancholy Blues. live. Also Somebody To Love live in 1981. Also live You Take My Breath Away, 1976 Hyde Park. Also do Freddie's Fabulous numbers with Spanish opera star Montserrat Caballe. One of my favorites is Wembley #13, a group of 1950s do wop tunes. Freddie and the band had a wide variety of types of songs, all of them wonderful. Also, 2017 Green Day concert, where before the band came on, over 60,000 in the audience sang along to Queen's music, every word of Bohemian Rhapsody, including the guitar riffs. What a testimony who a man who died in 1991.

Yea I totally agree with that statement simply because I have always said no matter how good someone else is on a song everyone is use to hearing the original person sing it and since that is how we first heard the song in its original incarnation anyone else that sings it regardless of skill level will never sound quite right nor will they be able to recreate the same passion that connected the original person to the song. That being said I think I will see if there is a video of Lambert and George singing this song on UA-cam to react to it would be interesting to see how they did regardless...

Awesome reaction! I'm with you! In my opinion, Queen transcends everything and their music's effect on the soul is nothing short of pure magic! I haven't seen them live in the flesh yet, but I've watched tons of clips online across time from the beginning to now and their live performances that are way better than the studio versions are a testament to their pure talent! Brian May and Roger Taylor are still jamming it out like its nobodies business! Personally, I think that Adam Lambert fits Queen like a glove, his stage persona, his vocal chops and especially respects Freddie's memory as well as his chemistry with Brian and Roger.

Fun fact from a recording engineering aspect: during the operatic section, using reel-to-reel, they stacked the vocal tracks so deep (no other singers were hired for it) that they nearly wore-out the tape, and if you listen for it, different voices are in different ears, even with the voices singing in unison. The musical composition is exquisite, and they engineered it, with meticulous intent, to the level of being phenomenal.

The video isn't about anything specific, Freddie preferred to leave it up to the listener to come to his/her own conclusions. He was actually working on three different songs when he had the genius inspiration to combine them into this one magnificent song. Another absolutely beautiful love song is "You Take My Breath Away". And just for the record, Freddie wasn't the "leader" of the group, just their lead singer.

You want a memory? Well here's one for ya :)
I had the great fortune to go to 5 Queen concerts here in Stockholm/Sweden in the late 70's and 80's. Each time was an eargastic experience what with Freddie's involving the audience and just plain musicianship and passionate professionalism.
One of my best memories actually took place on the subway to the arena they were playing at...
From the far end of our wagon someone started up on the intro to "We will rock you" (stomp stomp clap stomp stomp clap) and three beats in the whole wagon was doing it... Then the bloke who started it burst out in song and the rest of us fell in with the chorus... Really powerful at the time and I still get emotional thinking about it...
Love seeing you react to them and Welcome to the Queen Club :)

No one really knows the meaning of this song except Freddie him self and he took that secret to the grave. Many have speculated the true meaning and hidden inspirations of this song. Personally I've always felt it was Freddie coming out about his sexuality and how he turned away from his family's strict religious upbringing and beliefs as well as their expectations and wants for his life. Freddie and his father had a very rocky relationship and to me this was Frieddie saying goodbye to who he was born and just accepting who he was ment to be aka Freddie Mercury. There are alot of words in this song that are from Freddie's native tongue and where he was born as well as religious figures from that culture mentioned as lyrics during this song.

So I was a tender 15 years old when this came out (yeah I'm old). I gotta admit, we didn't know what to make of it. The operetta part really threw us and we thought it was kind of a joke or something.
Young and dumb is real. Only Queen would even think to do something like this. "Iconic" is a way over used term but it's correct here. Some people call it the single best rock song ever (it isn't).
I can definitely get behind saying Freddie was the greatest front man ever though. I've seen a lot of great bands live (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Van Halen Jethro Tull, ZZ Top, Ted Nugent The Eagles Fleetwood Mac Foo Fighters Elton John and lots more) but never Queen. The reaction to this song was unbelievable, it stayed at number one for 9 weeks, just a little fun fact, it might never have seen the light of day, but for a DJ called Kenny Everett, who stole the copy from Queen and played it 14 times over two days, the rest is history.
I was at three concerts of Queen, the last one in 1982 at Milton Keynes "Bowl" it's actually on UA-cam and if you want to see an absolutely outrageous performance by Freddie, watch "Fat Bottomed Girls" live at "The Bowl" that whole concert was epic and even though I'm 73 now I still feel like I'm young again when I see or hear them

The surface story is that he killed a man, gets put on trial (the operatic part) and sentenced to death. In the third part he is in denial, raging against the cell walls, and in part four he finally accepts his fate.
Freddie never explained the song, but it's commonly believed to be about his experience of coming out - to himself as well as others. Bear in mind the enormous stigma of being gay only a few years after it had been decriminalised. It must have been terrifying.
p.s. If you want an idea of what they were like live, I'd recommend Somebody to Love live in Montreal, 1981. Great performance.

It's an interesting tale in the songs lyrics.. found this short description on it to give you a better understanding.. It's NOT a death letter of suicide, it was a cry for help to his mother for screwing up.. His mother was praying for his salvation.
1st part: a man has committed homicide and will be put to death, so he's saying goodbye to his crying mother, whose whipping is represented by the guitar solo.
2nd: "I see a little silhouette..." the man is at the Gates of Hell (Thunderbolt and Lightning... )but he's still fighting, along with his mother's prayers for salvation: "I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me / He's just a poor boy from a poor family, spare his life from this monstrosity"
3rd: "Bismillah!" means "In the Name of God", which marks the entry of angels and begins the battle for this poor soul: "We will not let you go / Let him go! Bismillah!..."
4th: "So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye?" The demons are angry and losing, and he's "just gonna get outta here". Angels fight back and win the battle and the man is forgiven.
Loved that you enjoyed this beautiful song...

One of Queen's first gigs was in a pub near where I live. Roger Taylor went to school in my local city

Queen’s music is so lyrical. When you read the words they are just amazing. And Freddie, you could always actually understand him. And coming from someone that gets lyrics wrong all of the time I appreciate this fact! Thank you for your reaction, this is my childhood and teenage years! Miss Freddie, like so many, gone way too soon! I subscribed, if you haven’t taken the time for the entire Queen performance at Live Aid 1985. Freddie went against doctor’s orders, he had a throat infection, and went anyway. And it was amazing! Ohhhh, and get some headphones please! You need them to hear the nuances and little things Queen puts into their music! ❤️❤️❤️

The beginning which is the harmony is all Freddie even though the image shows the four of them. Freddie never revealed what BR is but said that it is up to interpretation so whatever you think. However one of his associates; his interpretation was that it was Freddie's Coming out as gay. So basically he was being true to himself and 'face the truth'.

I saw Queen in 1979 in the Reunion Arena in Dallas, It was amazing, I don't know what else to say, I'm so happy that I got to, I almost fell off a balcohney I was so into what was going on on stage, a friend grabbed me.

Is like watching a musical...Queen is awesome. I don't regret nothing in my life with all this great music through decades....Nothing. You stay as young as they stay...Kind of "musical spell" lol. Immortality. That's time proof.

This song will popup if you do a search through music history. It is the acknowledged greatest rock song ever recorded. It was in the Wayne's World movie back in the 90's because of its greatness. And here we are in 2020 and it is still the greatest rock song ever. Freddie may have passed on but Adam Lambert carries on what he started by not trying to be Freddie but rather by honoring Freddie. For that reason, it is still the greatest rock song ever even in their modern day performances.

FYI: in the intro with the four heads is actually Freddie doing 4-part harmony with himself (listen closely).

i tend to believe the view that this is about Freddie dealing with his sexuality, and all the pain involved in coming out. the man who was 'killed' was himself. "Goodbye everybody, I've got to go, Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth" seems to favour this interpretation.
