Underground Pipe Leads To Massive River Cave

- This culvert pipe under the highway took us deep into a huge cave that we could never find the end of!
Huge thanks to @funfinding4two955 for taking us to this place so we could explore with them! Go subscribe to their channel, they have a lot more cool places to show everyone!!!
Dude, awesome. That second part of the cave was awesome looking I missed out, glad Hannah got to see it and made sure you stayed safe. Lol
Awesome.
At timestamp 7:36, the large round center rock there may be big baby head. The left side was Roger Spurr, which spoke of these large creatures with hair, or Featherstone looks like. To me, the right side folds resemble a face. I can't see it too well. Back further, the large bone in the middle you walk under seems to be a large leg bone.
@@cbittle hey, what do you mean baby head? And the leg bone
@@cbittle ah okay, so the minerals deposited by the water form these head and bone formations pretty cool. Looks like it feels slimy for some reason 😂
@@vadski3469 that large round center rock to me looks like a tongue growing some black fur. Not like a baby's head. Like cloud shapes everybody sees something.
thanks for showing this place! we definitely have to collaborate again sometime soon!
I went into a pipe like this with my cousin when I was a teenager not realizing that even though it wasn't raining where I was, it had been raining heavily just 10-15 miles from me. We got into the pipe and climbed up into this chamber with grates at the top where we could stand on these ledges. Within a minute we noticed water started trickling into the previously dry chamber below us. We quickly climbed down and started moving up the probably 50ft long pipe, but by the time we got halfway, the water was up to our knees and it was getting hard to walk, and then debris started to stop up the pipe at the end, like tree limbs and garbage.
Once we made back to the entrance of the pipe, we were having to push tree limbs against the flow of water and climb over them to get out. We got out with scrapes and bruises from struggling against the debris, and sat on the side of the road over the culvert. It wasn't 30 seconds later that the entire pipe was full of rushing water. We would have either drowned or been trapped standing on little 6" ledges above the rushing water with no way to move or sit.
I'm never going into one of those again.
I was thinking of a similar scenario when they went into that drain pipe.
I have lots of brushes with death. Just the other day for example I crossed a road outside my house and lo and behold less than 5 minutes later a car came along and drove rght where I had been stood in the road. Ooh, sends chills through me imagining 'what if...?' Listen you'll have heard the phrase 'no fear' and 'stay curious', right? This advice suggests I should ignore my track-proven survival instinct to flee for my life and curiously continue staring at the on-coming car-aarrgghh! Doh!
Be careful what you say, for such words may be your last
Glad you got out, a young female blogger died from such an event a few years ago, people just don't know how fast water can rise even if it's not raining where you are.
Yep, that happened to some sewer workers were I live. They were down in there working on what had been a nice sunny summer day. But a storm came up fast without warning and it poured for a short time but very heavy. The one guy who was closest to the manhole barely got out but the other guy didn't. They just waited for his body to come out into the river over a mile away. Which it did but he was dead. I remember the storm and I was just a few blocks from where it happened. When I was a teenager I led some freinds into a culvert like that but I knew some of the dangers as I had personly seen this pipe at times covered by twenty feet of water in the summer. So we went in the winter, it was fun but all we saw as we went along were the other pipes that fed it and the farther we went the smaller the pipe became. Very dagerous places to be and people usaully don't tell others were they went.
Be careful going in there. The fact that there are fairly recently fallen looking leaves even on those parts that are higher up must mean that the cave floods nearly completely at times!
i had to read so many positive comments about this video, to find a few that want to shed some light on these illegal activities, bringing a small minor child into this is kinda sicko in my opinion, risk your own life for your youtube videos but dont bringing little kids... thats just sick there was a metal grate over the drain at the entrance for a reason, so ppl dont go down there and die.
You're right man. This is dangerous and everyone will be willing to say something about it when they're dead but not while everyone is having a good time
@@Budderking-zh8ow LOL
@@Budderking-zh8ow caving is not illegal. Nor is bringing a child to a cave. The gate has been there for over 40 years like that. When the highway was built over it , is when the metal tunnel and gate was put up
@@Budderking-zh8ow it's not dangerous, I took my daughter when she was 5, she loved it. It does flood so precautions must be taken.
The nonchalance with which you wade into opaque running cave water is terrifying.
Little girl keeping up with the big boys. Not only that, but pushing further than some as well. I hope she sticks with it and enjoys it for years to come. It's nice to see the younger crowd getting off the phone and out into nature. Stay safe little lady. (and big boys too.)
I would be marking my path every 10' and carrying 15 flashlights after ensuring there's no rain predicted for 3 years if I went down there. Mr. Ballen has covered similar places that didn't turn out so well for the explorers. Still, that was almost magical. Thanks for the video!
Things always look, different on the way back out!
I assume they just roll the recording back if they get lost
The news doesn't report on "man and sister enter cave and have a great time." Which happens far more often than tradegy.
Mr Ballen, the real MVP ❤
@@jenna2573 Indeed! 👍
The water flowing down the formation is beautiful. The way the water carves out those tunnels and makes natural bridges is too cool.
I think it's called flowstone
it is very cool
Wonderful formations!
17:26 a rule ive heard about caving (and cave diving) (other than always setting down a line so u can find ur way out and having plenty of backup flashlights etc and checking weather beforehand, watching out for flash floods and various other things) -- is that u should generally only go into caves where the water is flowing out of it and not into it.... this is so, firstly if there are any swimming sections or crawling thru tight areas with flow, that its harder to go in and easier to go out... this is for safety... so its more tiring to get deeper into the cave and easier to escape it.. secondly... you can end up with areas of water where the flow suddenly goes underground - you might see a pool of water, start swimming thru it and suddenly be sucked under (a kind of whirlpool effect) the flow dragging you further into the cave with no air and no way to escape... you guys should always be wary of things like this - i cant remember all the technical terms
Cavedivers told me to go into a spring and never into a siphon cave.
Yes but he is a pratt

Super valid, but also very rare concern for non cave divers. Still good to be aware of tho!
Reminds me of Donahue Cave near Bedford, IN. Could be the same. One of the few Indiana caves with an entrance/exit at both distant ends. The culvert entry was the accessible entrance. The other end and the drainage exited into the East Fork of the White River opening onto a small hung canyon in a jungle-like setting, the lazy, muddy White River below. We did the full length both ways perhaps three times in the early 1970's when my wife and I were dating. Caving makes for fun and memorable dates, sometimes more memorable than fun, but always memorable. I recall there was an upper dry section with some speleothems, but the incredible stream channel is where the cave truly shines, revealing multiple natural bridges, rimstone pools and active flowstone ramparts. One might find oneself chimneying a narrow water sculpted slot high above the stream or wading in ice cold water. Later improvements to the HWY 37 bypass have greatly changed the landscape beyond recognition for this old carbide lamp caver. In the 60's and 70's, we used the public library to find maps and directions to our chosen caves. There is a great leap of faith, part to full submergence passage at the river end of the cave, not for the faint of heart when water is a little high. Always look for leaves and sticks in the ceiling to know and appreciate what flood time looks like in a wet cave. Good times.
I just posted the same thing. It's been 20+years. I don't remember all the natural bridges. We called it Hubler. You're right tho Donahue was the actual name
Your memory didn’t fail you, this is indeed Donahue, also was called BC cave ( abbreviation for obvious reasons).
In 70s the Bradford brothers went in there with CANDLES,, Lost their light and were lost. At that time there was a facility that dumped massive amounts of water when they backwashed their filters, this would have flash flooded the cave.
Their Dad alerted them and they delayed backwash.

Are you not afraid of hypothermia ?
@@MortonLuvz2drum Lol, glad someone is! These guys are awesome, we do have to do this now
They’re mentally unwell. Bringing that child with them
You need to be very careful. It can be sunny where you are, but rain falling in the upper watershed will flood these sorts of drainages. It happens in only a matter of minutes. An urban explorer (and I believe his GF) in Philly were drowned a few years back doing this sort of exploration. You can do it 100 times and it's fine, but that 101st time will be your last.
Of course but the amount of things that could go wrong is high. Just imagine breaking you head lamp, running out of batteries or a bad injury by hitting a rock it means death.
I went in this cave as a teen with some friends we ended up coming out in a lake area in someones backyard. I still tell stories of exploring it. So cool!

Yea forreal! People forget that kids/teens aren't entirely incapable lol some of em can be pretty smart. I think some of it has to do with the urb/suburb life most of america lives, since letting kids be independent there is generally a bad/dangerous idea.

Although there are no stalactites, this is one of the most interesting caves I have seen. Thanks for the pictures. Nature is an excellent architect and sculptor.
Probably because it experiences heavy flooding.
Those are all in the upper levels. I plan on making a video about this cave this summer. I hope these guys do the same just to show how big this place truly is.
Stalagtites are in the upper level. The lower level does have some decorations , just not as much

@@darenmiller2218 what cave is this? The entrance looks similar to a place near where I live
Super cool! I've never known anyone else to do this! I did the same thing back in 1990 in a small town in Texas. A large culvert just like that one ran into a creek just outside town. I noticed some fish, etc that are normally cave dwelling in the creek near the opening after a super heavy rain. A short time later, I was given an assignment to write an essay on a place I hadn't been. That absolutely decided it! After finding some blueprints on the city's fresh water drainage/sewage system, I geared up and went in to find something very similar. The culvert had split at some point and water had carved a large area (possibly into an existing cavity). I always wanted to do more exploring, but I was alone at the time and life took me away from the area a short time later. I have another sewage drainage escape story that comes later in another city, but that one's for another time. haha Good luck and be careful!
I'm in tx, found a lot but never a cave from entering a culvert...the search continues.

Agreed
It doesn't take thousands
yeah definitely more than thousands! although i suppose a hundred thousand years is still "many thousands" haha
Water is powerful and caves like this could be carved out in as little as a decade. Depends on the type of earth
your name is awesome cash cat! we have no idea how long this type of cave takes to form but it seems to be a cave with a vadose stream so something in the geology of the area made a very long crack in the rock in a vertical orientation. acidified water filled the crack and carved out the crack until the water table lowered and now floodwater carves out the cave at an accelerated rate!
A little Edward/Hannah adventure! Haha I love it. My 9 year old daughter loves watching Hannah and her adventures through these subterranean worlds.
This one was interesting with all those over-and-under hurdles. It got sketchy quick though. I cannot imagine how cold those underground rivers are. Gotta be careful in those situations, especially while caving with kids.

I skydive & BASE jump but I would definitely not enjoy this sort of claustrophobic cave exploring, heh. I like going into the bigger caverns, but not the ones which have areas so small that you have to exhale in order to squeeze through.
Tidal caverns aren't somewhere you should go.
i really want to get into drain exploring but the moment im standing outside of them i start freaking out about spiders and homeless people. its scarier than i couldve imagined
every time I think youre going to say "we cant go any further" you find another little place to squeeze through. I would have called it off after the first 30 feet 😂
I find the caves fascinating but I don't understand their motivation to keep going deeper as soon as I see a narrow passage, a current or a descend, that's as far as I dare to go.
I feel like going into these places is not safe... but I'm glad nobody got hurt and it looks beautiful and fun! The fact that it just KEPT going is insane! It was SO BIG!! I hope to explore (safely) a cave one day!

We have a similar (albeit a bit larger) cave on our property. We were unaware of its exact location and size until we had already purchased the place and found it by accident. Blew us away at all the amazing things inside.
Survival bunkers are very popular now. Caves make it easy to regulate all the variables and concrete is fairly cheap. Nice way to add three or four millions dollars to property value

So many natural bridges! This made the cave sort of unique that way. It makes me wonder what the cave has in store further inside it. The mounds with sheets of water flowing down the side were quite interesting too. I think the flow stone in this cave is not as old as you would expect, the water is murky with an extremely high amount of dissolved calcium carbonate in it, I would expect this would make the flow stone features grow faster than normal. I hope you can return to this cave to explore it furtherm to it's end if possible, as it may have more strange features if it gets big again.

Do you think the local government (village/town/city) that installed that culvert actually went down there and explored it like you guys did first, or did they just see a hole in the gorund they could send water into and built it there?
Now these are the questions that should be asked
Lol, I thought the same thing ...probably just pout the pipe in the hole and called it a day !
The city new exactly where it went, There was construction that interfered with the path of natural run off water. The culvert was placed there to maintain the natural flow.
you guys are awsome all i can say, on the edge the whole tripp, b carefull and love the vids
I was not expecting a sewer to turn into such an amazing cave. Great video, thank you.
Some kids died in Australia like this. They went into the drain on a sunny day but were hit with a Torre t if water from rain many km away. The end of the pipe they were washed too was a sea outlet covered by a grate. One kid managed to squeeze through and survived, the other drowned.
Really awesome. I'd be worried that these caves could potentially fill rapidly with very little if any warning. Stay safe. Cool vid. God bless
15:15 the crayfish zooming across in front of him is cool.
There's more than corn in Indiana! All the rain this week will have it flooded for a bit! Awesome video!
Hannah is more bad ass than most of the guys I hung with exploring when I was your age! Well done Hannah.
Hey thanks
Wow awesome cave! I just stumbled upon this video and was immediately in awe of how cool that cave was and couldn't stop watching. And I'm here thinking that should be the new cave for an updated Goonies movie where they're searching for the treasure of One Eyed Willy's son or something. Anyways you have a new subscriber here and I'm looking forward to seeing your other videos and upcoming adventures
Would love for you to check out some of my caving content! I have been caving in this region for 20 years. There is so much to see and explore underground!
It’s just one long anxiety trip for me haha you guys are crazy. I would have stopped at the end of the pipe! Haha adventure on so people like myself can see these unique and beautiful places…. From the comfort of our couch haha

Great 👍 video! Just Subbed! I've only been a member of SCA for about 6 months! Great 👍 job!
Love watching the adventures. Half the time it is hard to guess what is up and down. Not all the time but for some areas I think a 360 cam shot/vid would be amazing like in some of the massive domes you have found.
I don't want to gush, but this is sooooo cool. Thanks for sharing. Be safe.
this is cool but equally terrifying! how do you guys know the way back!? can you imagine getting lost in a cave!!?
