Dude, you're the best teacher on UA-cam. I'm a fisherman and not a professional musician and my industry is dying and I may have to sell the only guitar I ever spent any money on that I've wanted since I was twelve and finally got a year and a half ago at 32 just to pay next months mortgage right before Christmas,(not a joke, sorry to be a downer) but since I've been at home cuz the weather and regulations have had us on land for a month now, while my kid is at school and wife's at work ,after I do the regular stuff around the house, when I do have a few minutes to play and jam a bit, I'll watch one of your videos at random and you always give me something quick and straightforward that I can use and it always gets me out of a rut and helps me enjoy the moment more. I really appreciate it and I've been recording stuff for a couple years now,but no matter where I get skill wise, you've always got something unique and useful and you're the only UA-cam teacher that I can always enjoy,so thank you for that dude. You're doing something positive in this world. Happy thanksgiving!
Phenomenal Lesson. Got me out of a funk and new (old) things opened up. Been following you for more than a decade and you're still on top of your game!
I am a beginner. Like 4 months ago I've not even held a electric guitar before. But when I found out about you I started learning my favorate songs and now this. I don't know if it's Good moving so fast but I'm happy
Marty this is the one. Since starting to get into learning soloing on electric guitar, I’ve been searching for the video that made it click for me. I already knew the scales as well the extensions, but this brought it all together and actually made it make sense. Thank you!!!!!
He is so skilled, he is playing in this scale slowly in the intro to say hey, it's okay if you play slow or make mistakes because that's how you learn. We ALL know he could SHRED that scale 🎉
I've been playing guitar for over 10 years and pentatonics have never been my strong point, it was always something that I learned but never understood or was good at because I never understood but this video is a game changer to my guitar solo's. No more rhythm guitar for me!👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you thank you!! Picking the guitar back up after 30 years of no playing. So, basically starting over with ghosts of memories on how to play. This brings it all back lightning fast!!
Hey Marty, happy New Year and thanks for all you do! For the new year, I have committed to learning new guitar playing skills (I.e., finally learning some “lead guitar”) and Marty, you are already part of it! Quick background: I’m a strong intermediate player; started playing when I was 10 (1972!), have had a few lessons, but mostly “self-taught.” I’m good with chords, fills and a few licks or riffs, BUT, I’ve never pushed myself to learn “LEAD” guitar. So a couple days ago I started your Beginners Lead course. You’ve already taught me several things, that suddenly make so much sense. And, just like all the great free lessons I’ve gotten here, you do a fantastic job of teaching on the pay side, too. I love the explanation, pace and approach to this course. Also, the ability to go back and rewatch is essential. And the important part is I’m really excited to start learning again; to be working on improvement; vs just my normal daily noodling and songs routine. So thanks again for all that you do! I really appreciate it.
Literally the only scale I know. Random person showed me this scale when I was like 20 and changed my life. Thanks random guy wherever u are.. ..and thanks @MartyMusic !
I've known the 5 pentatonic scale for years now and since then a lot of other scales I have trouble being innovative with them very frustrating this lesson is helpful.
Since the one and only Marty taught me to play Stairway, Listen to The Music and More Than A Feeling I am not interested in soloing any more. From lead to rhythm, from first row to second. Thanks teacher!
Marty, please remember to shows us which finger or fingers, which strings and what order and which frets! We watch carefully and appreciate what you do! You’re the best!
Damn it, I already learned the 5 penatonic shapes. I am going to spend the next couple of days unlearning them and then I will come back to this video. 😂
@@MartyMusic Sorry for the sarcasm, of course I am not going to unlearn them. This a great video though. I will share it with folks I know who are just getting started with pentatonic journey's. I think I already grabbed so many of these ideas from you in previous videos. Hendrix penatonic theory stuff you have posted in the past, but this video was a nice complete lesson focusing on just the single idea. Thanks Marty, May the Shred be with you.
Did the same thing watching this video paused it at about 9 min and went into a 30 min trance of just soloing up and down the neck and playing all scales till I ran out of frets. amazing to think less than a year ago I was doing a similar lesson on your website and remember how I had to look at tabs to play now it’s cake. I definitely recommend to anyone at this stage to learn this and get it where you can play it faster and faster then maybe look at playing scales on the E string then look into caged method and learn all positions that way. Thank you Marty.
@@Eric-us9mw Yep, Exactly. It is a great way to warm up for learning caged. I can see how caged can be so overwhelming and confusing to someone who is just learning it for the first time. It's better to learn it in pieces and break it down to just one shape at a time, but the beauty of this lesson and idea is that it exposes you to the extensions without even knowing it. It can be frustrating at first but just little pieces like this lesson will help it make sense later on.
Exactly the way I taught myself over 30 years ago. Back then I didn't know what a pentatonic scale was, I just knew what notes worked and which ones didn't. Your always one fret away from one that will work
I have a real good understanding of the pentatonic scale… a few nights ago I had a light bulb moment.. I was wondering if the Gm moved up a fret was Am and so on.. then I kept at it and realized all the positions were the same 🤯 once I master this scale I can move onto another when my knowledge is more advanced
Im branching out from home row now getting the hang of each position. Its difficult for me because i have a lot of other insturments i play as well still learning alot of things on piano as well. Guitar has helped put a diffrent spin in ny piano playing. As does piano with guitar. Its so funny how other insturments influence your playing just based on how you hear it
All jokes aside this is so much gold in one video I wish this was around when I started learning and the fact you can slow this down makes everything so simple to learn for a beginner. Yt vids like this are invaluable for someone who wants to learn guitar. But I do think that there is something to be said about someone who is self taught like my self and so many others. Its part of the reason I have such a great ear for sounds it forces you to really hone in on it and naturally know the next fingering on the fretboard because you know the sound your looking for but there’s absolutely no denying it took me a lot longer than it would have if I had been trying to learn while having access to stuff like this! Your videos always brighten my day. Thanks for everything you have done and continue to do for all of us guitar players out there man! 🤘🎸
Nice lesson 👍. I have a whole library of your lessons, been working with your blues rock rhythm course and having a blast cleaning up my chord/rhythm skills in my morning practice sessions. I've improved so much following you and working on the basics with your courses. That's why your number ☝️❤😎.
Great simplified video as always Marty, I was looking to see how I could send you a request, so I thought I would just comment on this video and hope you see it, I’ve been breaking into playing blues more these days, but I would absolutely love it if you could do a basic version of Parisian walkways, with a view for me to build on it over time and throw maybe a few more embellishments into it as I get better, I just love the slow tempo and emotion of that song, and I know you are the one to get me playing it, here’s hoping, all the best from the south of England 👍
Really great lesson here! Would you be able to do a lesson showing how to play some of those licks youre doing while shredding in the pentatonic? Every time i try to improvise it sounds like im just going up and down the extended scale. Its like ive got some kind of mental block ha. Thanks for staying true to your audience!
Hi Marty! I love your videos, they're so helpful. I've been getting into trying to learn to play funk a bit but I really struggle with funk strumming/picking with the muting, especially because I seriously can't seem to keep a hold of my pick. Would love a video on this.

That's awesome!
This is very helpful. It really opens the fretboard up.

Glad to hear it
Excellent lesson. One additional challenge would be to teach how to incorporate open strings.
Thanks Marty! Is just like playing don’t look back in anger solo, but in different order 😊

Whoa digging this bigtime, thanks for the shovel and showing us where to start digging !
awesome! Glad to help!
holy shit! Thanx a lot. That‘s great

Can you do Tennessee Flat top box
Great video really helped me grasp moving up and down the neck. I’m trying to learn to improvise a melodic solo but it turns out I can’t keep a beat….
Practice your rhythm separately, you can always get a metronome and just play the pentatonic scales on the beat and try to lock in!

On the exercise you mention do you have a tab of that? It’s sort of hard to figure out what the scale is
