Opened a brand new store for the company. First time the heat kicked 'on' the electric heat tape smoked off all the oils and dust while the store was open. Had the fire dept respond, part of the shopping center evac'd... Quite the response! Fire Dept gave us a hard time, and we told 'em to blame the HVAC contractor. They are supposed to dry run the system and do full air balance before we get the occupancy cert.
Funny thing? About a month later, Store filled with smoke again... Fire Dept blamed the HVAC again! HVAC company comes out and states "Not us, Everything is MINT as it's a new system and it already flashed off the trash." Seemed to happen every few months until they closed the location a few years later.

Loose belts wear out the pulley. Then wears out new belts when installed. Then the next step is belt dressing. The only proper way is keep the belt properly tightened to prevent worn pulleys and belts stretching from the heat generated by the slippage. You made the exact correct call, replace the pulley and belt. It is great seeing someone with integrity and know how at work.

I have found the circuit boards crack around the relay pins where they solder. When I worked on equipment at our church I had several boards fail at the solder connections. Both hot surface and spark ignition versions.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 3 роки тому +1

when that happens, it's most always due to relay contacts failing, which causes excess heating and expansion/contraction of the solder joint.

Always check CO after touching a gas burner.
    Huge liability
if you don't own a combustion analyzer at least get a CO analyzer. You can use it on any type of gas equipment.
    Hot water heaters etc.
A must,I can't tell you how many times a year I find a gas burner running incorrectly.

I just fixed an ICP package unit for a friend. It had no ignition from the ignition module. When I unplugged power from the module and put my meter on it, , I had 26 volts. First assumption was bad module. Then I happened to notice during diagnosis that the gas valve was sporadic. After looking at the diagram the power was ran in parallel with the ignition module. Plugged up ignition module and it dropped to 2v. Ended up being an intermittent relay on the control board. Replaced and all has been well for a month or so now. If I hadn't used a big picture diagnosis, I would've replaced the ignition module for no reason. Funny how it would show 26v with no load on the circuit then dropped to 2 with a load.

    • @mrbyamile6973

@Timothy Salomon I think FerdinandFake was being sarcastic in that with adding a reversing valve and a few sensors it could be a heat pump instead of a combustion emission producing device... maybe I'm reading to much into his comment.

    • @FerdinandFake
      @FerdinandFake 3 роки тому +11

@Timothy Salomon burning gas is propably alot cheaper than the electricity and expensive heatpump components.
Just thought it was funny because ive never seen a setup like that. I wonder how the microchannel condenser would react if you hacked a reversing valve and some biflow components in there, considering the climate in cali it might just work without instantly freezing over.

there's not many states/areas a giant crude heat pump would work worth a beans. if there was they'd all be heat pumps :)
it;s just too cold in winter in vast majority of their sales areas to even have them as heat pumps.

Interesting, never thought about Exhaust air (Vacuum) and Make up air as something in a building which would effect the pressure in the building. In my Industry, we have tanks that need to be kept at a pressure of around 1 inH20 and that is done by means of "injecting" make-up gas or a controlled valve on a vacuum line to pull down the pressure.

Basic millwright skills - align and tension your belt drives, and you can go many years in most applications.
Those motor mounts in the package HVAC units are flimsy and awkward, and the pulleys look to be low cost items as well, so I don't expect you to get decades out of such a drive, but when you have really good components that are set up well, your limit on life is the elasticity of the belt, and I've worked with machine tools that have gone decades before needing a new belt and the pulleys are just lightly polished.
Decades in shops which are not air conditioned spaces. The roof-top exhaust fans are going to cook belts here in SoCal... sunlight plus hot gases from the kitchens will do that.
That long life is largely due to a pretty significant difference in quality of the system and alignment, because the belts are the same, and the pulleys aren't hugely better than on these HVAC units.

Changing the width of the drive pulley, will change the amp draw of the motor. Drawing higher than recommended amperage is an excellent way to destroy the motor, but I'm lazy and would rather replace the belt, they're lighter than a motor.
Also, if that building had a professional air balancing, changing the pulley's width will toss the air balance right out the window, and that is not saving the customer anything.
Funny, but my recent maintenance sweeps at a national sporting goods store have turned up issues on unit#3 at multiple stores. I just cannot turn of the technician part of my brain to just change filters🤷‍♂️

    Question
Why don’t they use reverse cycle in the States instead of having a gas burner system ?
I work in Melbourne they do have a few here but not many 🤔

you mean "heat pump", that would only work efficiently in some of the warner climate areas. other areas it would be constantly frozen up and needing to defrost after very short run cycles.

Wouldn't grounding yourself have prevented that from happening with the CO2 can? Personally, I don't touch the inside of my computer without doing so.

Replace pulley's? Absolutely! And don't adjust the pitch. You'll screw up the customers air balance.
Wish we had no no heat calls. Glad I am retired

Do you use an rpm scanner that has a laser to check the speed?

Why is there a 110 outlet inside the unit. and is there a inverter for 110? I’ve always wondered

service outlet for work/repair, likely it's just one leg of the 208V 3 phase, which would provide common 120V to neutral single phase power ;)
obviously the unit would need fed with 4 wire conductors(plus ground) so it has a neutral.
I didn't pay attention that it was 3-phase unit, but I'm sure it is without going back to look :)
