The formation of the nuclear Navy is one heck of a story. A working reactor onboard a ship with impeccable safety is testament to one man's vision. Richoven took the concept to everyday use. He deserved everything he got. But heard he was kind of a divkhead
Interesting observation. Initially I'd speculate some kind of telemetry package or what was known as a crash position indicator (CPI) -- a radio beacon designed to be ejected from an aircraft. Not sure though!
+PeriscopeFilm that is what i suspect as well, was mostly just sadly watching the plane fall apart then noticed that. Really interesting video and great channel
At the time this was filmed they were scared, if they knew what we know now they would be terrified and have a stroke. My we have come a loooong way since this film.
'300 - 400 atomic subs w/ Regulus missiles'; that must B some rilly good crack somebody's smokin'. They made Terrier servicing look real EZ here. The 'crisis' here is the Russian sub fleet of ~400 boats, in a growing navy.
a most interesting historical film thank you
14:36 "From bases in Libya" My how times have changed.

28:44 - sad to see a B-17 getting smoked like that.

Well done, except for a bit of confusion regarding old VS new hull numbers.
Explain...
In the write up it states that Saratoga was CV-3, should have been CV-60 as the follow - up to Forrestal.
Also, SSN-21 did not exist in 1956 - I'm sure you know which boat was actually SSN-21.
Yes we will mention these mistakes to the person who is writing them up. Hard to find good people to do write-ups on a budget!
I understand that, and it's especially confusing when there are multiple ships with the same name. It really helps to be an old Navy hand.
16:53 before digital computers. This drone/missile was launched from a sub then flown back to base.
