Regarding the French 'r'. I recently noticed that the cawing of the crow, compared to the cawing of the rook, differs in that the crow pronounces the 'r' in French and the crow does not. I tried to translate it into French, but the translator gave me the same word for these birds?

This is how children learn. Organically and naturally. My children had french for 5 yrs when I speak to them they can't understand can't make basic sentences. So school is definitely not helpful for most. I use duolingo. Listen to french music. Alizée Gourmandises is a great one. Celine Dion also has some great stuff. Immers yourself in it and trust the proces. Naturally you will see progress. Trust your brain 😊 If on netflix or dvd choose the french dub for movies serials and docus. Another one I like is listening to disney songs w the lyrics in french and showing.
From research that has been done on the subject of learning languages, it is far more effective to learn from immersion in a language than it is to learn from memorizing words. That is how you learn your first language as an infant and toddler. You start associating sources of stimulus with certain words and sentences, and that is how the brain learns. It is through pattern recognition. The best way to start is to develop a baseline vocabulary from resources like Duolingo, then start watching TV in french, listen to French music, watch these UA-cam videos, etc. In time you will start to understand more and more, especially shows in French. American/English media is the most effective English learnign resource in the world for non-english speaking countries. I am from western Canada (Alberta) and we had to take French from grade 4 to grade 9. These French classes relied on memorization, which is an idiotic and totally useless way of leaching a language. When you memorize things in a classroom environment, you do so for tests, then you forget them as soon as you move on. As a result of this I knew almost nothing about French outside of the most basic of words like "merci" when I decided I wanted to learn french as an adult. The way I learned was through immersion of the language.
haha the "beaucoup" thing is very funny! here in brazil we have the same problem when foreign people come and ask for pão de queijo. it's a very common (and delicious) bread and it's kinda offensive to say the english version "cheese bread". so foreign try to say "pão" and it commonly gets out as "pau" (pao) which is... well, dick.
