I dont practice swords much but I had injured my shoulder and something in my mind kept telling me to practice sword. I followed part of this warm up and my shoulder feels good. I feel a good amount of blood flow and exertion in the muscles. This will be good therapy.
As a fellow student of the sword, I've come across your channel recently and I've really been enjoying your philosophy. I hope I can learn to teach with your depth and intimacy one day.
I've trained martial arts for about 3 years now (mma, bjj) and recently got a katana as a gift. This was my first drill with it.. Thank you for you info. Going to a class soon Ps. What a workout!
I've purchased the 2 kihon basic katana courses and Its been a life saver and your videos opened my mind about training beyond just training with a katana. Even during my work, I use my bosses broom stick practicing when I'm not at home. With no excuses, I still find a way to practice. Excellent video as usual Mr. Norcross!!!
Your passion inspires me. Me watching this and seeing how much of yourself you give into training and classes and your views on helping the social dent as of the happening of covid, really spoke to me. This is the first video that I watched from your channel and I already subscribed half-way through. Keep on making these seemingly great videos. ^w^
I recently came across your channel and I'm starting out using a katana. I'm 17 and I've been watching every video I can about katanas and so far yours have been the most informative
thank you very much Todd , had really good time watching some of your videos . . it's been roughly 15 years since my bujinkan dojo closed there in south of france and I still deeply miss our art . But I'm happy for your students they got lots of things to learn from you through this path and your philosophy .
What an amazing video, could not have asked for a better introduction into martial arts. Thank you for taking time out of your life to make this video for the few who care and watch it.
About to buy my first Bokken. Can't wait. I have your channel and several others saved to use as reference. Thank you very much for putting all this online!
Wow. Where are you and why isn't it Dallas so I can take classes with you? I would absolutely love to be your student. I hope the ones you have realize how lucky they are!
I'm a fairly long term kendo/iaido practitioner, but I've always enjoyed learning about other arts and weapons. Thanks for sharing this. I like your philosophy.
I have been avoiding this for so long, but i have to say how much you resemble my favourite comedy actor Dom Delois, also in speech cadence, which is probably why i enjoy and take in your lessons so easily
Great video! Love the sword techniques and explanations. The words of wisdom at the end was fantastic. Well said and some great advice we can all give thought to and share. Keep more like this coming. 🥋👊👍
Thank you very much for the great introduction and practice of the katana sword. It has been a while since I've trained in the bujinkan arts here in nyc and my training equipment has been gathering dust for the past couple of months and maybe years. Of coarse, I do keep my space clean as often as possible, but depression and lack of motivation has set in. Your enlightening speech and motivation to find new ways and keep going lifted me right out of any lack of confidence or giving up on training that was dragging along. I can honestly say, that's what training is about and also life. I was training everyday at different locations and getting a good feel for how to apply the art in various areas and obstacles. I even train on my bicycle. Like you said, we are only limited to our imagination. You are right. You are speaking the truth. I feel we have the tendency to get stuck and not know what to do next. By taking the time to train, it will come naturally. That's what happened to me in my personal life. I was stuck and couldn't perform past a technique trying to apply henka within the practice of the kihon happo. Eventually I was able to progress a little bit at a time, as well as with every other training program. I'm still learning and will never stop. Your effort and time is much appreciated shidoshi. Have a great day and keep inspiring. Peace.
Thank you for this instructional video. I will be following your teaching. I use a bokken inside, and the katana outside. Read, Goro Nyudo Masamune decades ago. .
Very interesting! I've been considering the art for a few years now, as something Completely different than the firearms that I normally train with and practice with! I like both your approach and your philosophy, and your easy way of getting your point across! Great trainers in the Army have the same easy and professional approach and teaching style as well and well-taught classes were always a great time (plus we were getting paid to be there, which is nearly unbeatable!)! Thank you for the video, I'm now a new subscriber!
I feel that pain Sensie I want to go back to my dojo to practice Okinawa Karate but with the virus it makes things difficult and I’m glad more dojos are opening back up now
I really enjoy your videos, you have a very big knowledge. This video specially was very motivational because I was thinking on quitting because of some health issues and age, but as you said, there is no such thing as being old to train. Thank you
thank you for your video. I just bought a bokken but did not know where to start. You express peace and humility that I hope to also keep. Do you have a video about defensive blocks for katanas? Do you know of any content online for how to have proper stance when using the katana?
I just discovered this channel and love it to bits... exactly the kind of approach I was looking for, Thanks !!! I sure wish I could train with you in person. One question, when cutting on the left or right side, are we obliged to still use the strong hand or is changing sides AND hands acceptable too ?
I noticed you say not to bring the sword too far back before slicing as this is only good for movies, but surely bringing the sword further back will allow more power as you will have more full body rotation behind the sword? Even with a sharp sword you'd still need some power to slice through flesh and bone.
Thoughts on tozando iaito? I was looking at their semi custom so that way I can get one well fit and sized to my body which roughly from what I’ve seen would be a 2.25 shaku blade and a 9.5 sun tsuka
Great video! Have you considered a patron page with some solo material for those under lockdown or for distance training? In person is best, but not always possible. Especially with covid restrictions on travel. Great site with lots of info...wish Toronto was closer to Ohio!
Hi Karen. Thanks. I am too busy with my in-house students (130 of them) and long-distance students within 150 miles of my dojo. No time to do extra lessons on top of our regular 20 per week, sadly. Our DVD's are the next best thing. Thank you. Good luck! www.thedojoinc.com/download.html
If there was ever a time to train harder, the uncertainty of where covid protocols might lead was a driving factor for me in independence and general preparedness. As a result things have gotten progressively more dangerous, and I'm taking my training more serious then ever. Knowing that I'm becoming more prepared gives me a peace of mind that the comforts and conveniences only distract you from.
I would love to be able to go to the woods and practice with my Katana, but alas here in Ireland they are illegal even to own (even a blunt one), unless they are antique and even then its enough to get a search warrant for your home. My kid and I have practice versions though. I wont say anymore ;)
@thedojomartialarts tyvm for taking the time Sensei. I had some questions, is it ok to reach out to the dojo or is email preferred? It is in reference to visiting your dojo, I am in Ft Lauderdale and the scarcity is real. Domo arigatou Sensei.
Wish I could see your foot movements, I always have trouble coordinating which side/lead foot I step forward and cut with...generally is it what ever side you cut from? Do you always have to change you're lead leg each cut? Thanks
Generally for power, yes. But it also depends on the distancing whether legs/feet are changed or move? Changing hip directions is good for practice. It keeps you constantly moving yourself as the target. You are 'harder to hit/cut' that way...
I'm an unconventional samurai. Hikari no kaifuku Ryu main rules. Is to admit defeat in the face of victory. My sensei said in vrokwn English, always expect defeat. If you see you have lost at start. Yet refuse to give up or fail. Even death is a March in victory. Honor is key, humility is irrevocable. And as tiny as the sentiment is. When I realized what it meant. I didn't realize the power it held. In authentic kata. I took many cuts. One in the head. "MEN" if you expect. It has no effect but the mortal. The mortal is the plane in which you can maintain in thought and action.
I'm a bit late on the reply, but an alloy iaito can run a couple hundred US Dollars on up. I have one that is $800. An unsharpened steel iaito can run about the same. I have a shinken that was $1200.
I dont practice swords much but I had injured my shoulder and something in my mind kept telling me to practice sword. I followed part of this warm up and my shoulder feels good. I feel a good amount of blood flow and exertion in the muscles. This will be good therapy.

Great words of wisdom at the end about social healing. Well said, truly a great teacher.

This is why I love this style. Thank you for this.
Thank you kindly sir for the great lesson and drill. The drill and your talk has helped my mental health.
“Sword cutting” to get the “blood flowing”. Lol

Glad you enjoyed!
Just a great channel. If I was in your area I would join your dojo in a second!
I bought some swords from Fringe Sports. I'm looking forward to trying this.
Great video. I'm from a jujitsu school that does Kukishinden and Ryo Shinto Ryu. I like seeing people do the same thing. We call it 9 directions.
Thank you. That was awesome.
Im glad i saw this video when I had the chance
Good learn for me. Thank you
My pleasure!
I really enjoyed this video. Time for my inspired mind to get to training.
thanks for everything!!
Very motivational. Thank you sir
I liked this. It was simple and easy to digest imo. Arigato
Why don't you do a video on how to cut mats or bamboo? I want to learn this please..
Awesome video Sensei, i love katana, it's an amazing weapon to handle, and a great swordsman is unbelievable to just watch.
Arigato gozaimas 🙏
What passion you have. Great words of wisdom at the end thank you. Do you have any videos on blocks with sword?
Thanks for the video, thumbs up
Absolutely brilliant and beautiful. Thanks 🙏. An excellent practice session I will incorporate into my practice 👍.
You are a very good and intelligent human. Is there a good place to train in East Mesa, Arizona?
Thank you. I do not know. Sorry. I would internet search and go try out free classes.
Definitely subscribing to this channel!!

Perfect!
Amazing 💪💪👊👊🥋🥋⚔️⚔️

It’s funny that this video helped with sword fighting and with movie making - I am just to scared to work on set. Thank you.
Can you teach us how both our wrists should be when doing these cuts please
Thanks for the video I subscribed!
There isn't a dojo close to me ,I live in rural Missouri. Its 75 miles to the closest city
I just discovered this channel and love it to bits... exactly the kind of approach I was looking for, Thanks !!! I sure wish I could train with you in person. Hi awesome video!do you have an online course from the very beginning?thanks

Man that whoosh is so satisfying.
when do i learn sun breathing?
Looks like a really light katana
My decorated sword weighs about 3.175 lbs, is that good? I am not trying to get cists or another genetic health problems some of that kind.
Nice video...

Hi, is there any online classes available?

😂😂😂 I'm in Ireland too, and I understand your difficulty, were all in the same boat 😂🙏
thanks awesome
Ok, so if I'm in a private studio and nooobody else is around and the doors are locked.... can I use shinken? Bc I still need to buy an iaito lol
Yes. Sure. Train at your own risk.
@thedojomartialarts tyvm for taking the time Sensei. I had some questions, is it ok to reach out to the dojo or is email preferred?
It is in reference to visiting your dojo, I am in Ft Lauderdale and the scarcity is real. Domo arigatou Sensei.
I’m 12 and I LOVE Samurai, always have. I’m starting iaido and since im so young I have trouble stopping the blade, any tips?
Please be more specific. "Stopping the blade" makes no sense and needs a lot of clear context in order to answer you, properly.
Wish I could see your foot movements, I always have trouble coordinating which side/lead foot I step forward and cut with...generally is it what ever side you cut from? Do you always have to change you're lead leg each cut? Thanks
