- Penelope Spheeris is working on the DVD release!
The Decline of Western Civilization III is a 1998 documentary film directed by Penelope Spheeris that chronicles the gutter punk lifestyle of homeless teenagers. It is the third film of a trilogy by Spheeris depicting life in Los Angeles at various points in time. The first film The Decline of Western Civilization dealt with the punk rock scene during 1980-1981. The second film The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years covers the Los Angeles heavy metal movement of 1986-1988.
From what I heard Penelope had asked a bunch of different squaters/punx, who best represented the L.A. scene at the time. It's kinda different from the previous movies cuzz this one seemed to focus more on the squater scene rather than then music that was comin'outta there at the time.
I am one of those kids(from this movie, not just in general), if it weren't for the platter of food and the $20 for the interview, odds are we would have been down on Melrose spanging or detoxing our brains out on Hollywood Boulevard. Cheers to Litttle Stevie, Squid and Evil! Wish you were still alive Brothers!
DVD release is coming soon!
@misfits319 Yes, because Penelope Spheeris working in a DVD release, visit her official webpage.
i like how penelope used like the same film stock as part I, it gives it a feel of continuity. i've been wanting to see this for a LONG time, but haven't found it.
I was lucky to see this in the theatre....twice! I didn't even know a part 3 was made till my friend told me he was at the filming for the Final Conflict footage. He even didn't know filming was goin on till he got there! He was there 'cause he's friends with the guys of Final Conflict. The pathetic thing is most of that concert footage was filmed in a venue in Corona, CA. 45 miles east of L.A.! the film crew had to drive some of those punks to the gigs!
i shat meself when they said "im here 2 see greenday!" then i remembered, greenday were punk back then O.o
Where can i watch the whole movie?
@vectorinvader Man....I gotta see you do that in person one day! I'm gonna show this to EVERYONE!
The Decline of Western Civiilization Part IV: The End of Good Music (1999-Present)
Coming Soon
Why the hell isn't this on DVD? its one of the best documentaries ever. Someone needs to upload this in its entirity too
There's cool bands from each of those you listed along with the scenes from the 70's like in NYC (Ramones, Richard Hell, Johnny Thunders, etc.) and the UK (The Clash, Sex Pistols, etc.).
do you know where i can watch the whole documentary? i remember watching this a few years ago and i would like to watch it again.
thanx for the info. surprised it's as hard as it is to track down considering the popularity of parts 1 and 2.
I wrote to the distribution company a couple of years ago, and they sent me a free VHS copy. Don't have the address anymore (sorry), but it's on the net.
Where can I see the full movie? I'm having so much trouble finding it for streaming.
If anybody has a copy of this movie kicking around, could you PLEASE upload it on UA-cam or Piratebay or something? I don't like to steal it but if Penelope Spheeris can't get it distributed, we may as well.
Whats the name of the song in the very end?
Where can i watch this whole documentary?
Agreed. I've always prided myself on being a blue collar, working-class punk.
Thanks,Beck did a song about being a punker called losers,he is one of us.Thank you for your opinion on punk rock we really care what you think
I found on UA-cam, it don't matter what you say some one will have something to say. You can be IN the punk, alternative movement and they know more than you even though they were born after the movement was long gone. So all I can say is, take it as you want it to and not listen to people. I put on a punk record for nostalgic reasons. PUnk was and is for the youth. Once you're an adult, rules and values change. Good day!
@tmf1977 some are dead, some are married with kids. after living this lifestyle, looking back on it 20 years later (I'm 38 now), i can honestly say i regret absolutely nothing. i had huge amounts of fun, traveled all over the country for FREE, i met some incredibly interesting people whom i will remember for the rest of my life, and ohhh the stories! most of all, I did more living than a "normal" person my age ever had.
Were can find this ive already seen the first 2
can't find this anywhere. anybody know a good torrent or vid site?
holy shit aaron cometbus, now theres a name i havent heard in a long time :D i remember reading Cometbus back in the day :D ahhhhh nostalgia
i grew up there haha i was at the showcase every day basicly soooooooo manyt good times its sad they had to shut it down.... cheers to punk rock
From which band is the dude with the red mohawk and the nosering?
The resistance
Malcolm Awesome, thanks. Can't seem to find the footage used in this film trailer anywhere though. Such a pitty.
his name is Eyeball aka David Skinner i actually know him
Inspiring us musicians!
I love Why-Me, the kid at the start. He was the coolest guy in the whole movie... I dunno why.
Agreed.
hes doin well these days. has a job and lives in oregon
BLUEbalerbals he just got married this week, haha
do you know how anyone else is doing? or maybe anywhere I could read about how some of the others have been since filming?
i have no idea. my guess is that this is just what the street kids were into at the time. the music definitely isn't the focus though, she only really gives naked aggression attention.
@onbradley it's hard to tell what the movie's really about from only 3 minutes. it's more about the lives of the street kids than the music itself. the kids drink from sunrise to sunset, live in squats, and were mostly abused/kicked out by their parents. when asked where they will be in 5 years, nearly all say they'll be dead. many are dead by the time the film comes out. it ends up being a serious and depressing into the lives of these kids abandoned society with no one left except each other
Penelope is wokring on a DVD release.
Hi all!
I need a very big help.I can speak in english, but I do not hear it purely what did they say.I transleted and maked 7 punk film subtitles.Because in the world a lot of people cant speak in english. So i make subtitles. So now i need your help. Please send me in e-mail, what do they say.Because i want to use these text, and i'll make subtitle. Please help!If one people write it what did they say in the first 3 minute, it's a really big help for me.
so what is the story on squid's death?
Duh. It says it in the movie but I want to know the whole story
Ugh, I know, right? I can't wait for these to get released.
please please post more!
some one please post this whole movie.!!
@empire138 Which one are you?
Wow, that guy in the CRASS shirt is frighteningly intelligent.
punk started in the US and England at the same time, and you can thank the ramones who started in 1975. punk broke in 1976 and the sex pistols capitalized on it and became media darlings. the National Front only had a few bands loosely tied to them while there were more Left Wing Oi bands in the beginning like Red London, Sham 69, the Angelic Upstarts, Cockney Rejects, the Opressed and Oi Polloi.
yeah, they are releasing a box set. declinemovies dot com has information.
im not sure what your saying what clash shirt?
Cool!
There are still those who are working class, sadly probably not as much as before but I know I still am and always will, and even if one day i end up moving into a white collar somehow I'll never let go of my working class roots.
the real way to piss someone off is to be more successful, hard working, and know more than they do, not rot in a gutter
@tmf1977 goddamnit you got me all nostalgic now :(
god i miss the days of zines, actual PAPER ones with handwritten commentary and shitty grainy pics xeroxed in. i wish i could go back :(
watched this after i read a comment on a forum about this dude who knew most of the guys there, he used to be a gutterpunk and shit and he said most of these kids are now dead. guess they got what they wanted. kinda sad but at least they got to decide their own destiny
@empire138 which were you?
@avalanchesoul what do you consider yourself?
@Willroast ur just gonna have to look at it on utube and all the parts
do you have a ps3? if so, I can show you how to get this.
Who is that with the red mohawk and why is he so angry?
its funny the point they made when everyone was like "i wasnt even born yet"
still trying to find a video that has Darius Guest in it. he and i had a baby together in 1994.....things just didnt work out between us........with the exception of my dear friend Squid and the never mentioned Lawana.....i do hope Darius is doing ok now......our daughter is 17 now and beautiful......just hope he's ok.....goddamn that Spoon for what she did
80's hardcore had more of a meaning, so did oi, street punk is still alluring to me but fuck if it has a message other than getting drunk with friends.
The whole movie is on google video. It's actually pretty funny and cool :)
I say that as an example. There are other things that people can do, but at least do something. By rotting in a gutter they prove that everyone who said theyre gonna be a bum was right. Also by rejecting society as an attempt to rebel is showing that you care about what other people think about you and you're still trying to fit in, but its a different crowd. They still conform, everyone does it's human nature. Its the extent at which one conforms which is the problem, like not being yourself
1998. Showcase Theater Corona. Was at those shows. Im the guy wearing the suit with my hair combed in the sea of crusty mohawks. THATS PUNK!
God I miss showcase theatre
Unless they are your parents. Rotting in a gutter always seems to rub parents the wrong way, for some reason.
Why'd she pick these bands?
wow....i remember when i filmed for this in front of the showcase back in 96.... good god....i think i was 17 in this clip...fuckin time flies! Nick aka "I know a guy who can suck a slurpee up his nose",,,, fyi, that was actually vodka....hence his brutally fuckedup look once he finished....
no they don't. did you see what they did to the clash shirt?!?! ='[
he has hung in there for a long time....been very sick off and on for years.....looks like he may be "heading west" pretty soon as there are terminal health conditions at this time....i know how much he suffers....all the others will be waiting for him on the other side....always sad when an old friend passes on, especially those as memorable as Darius....:(
@roboimp Oh :D Good! thanks man.
Well yeah, but these people always talk about wanting to piss people off and I'm saying theres positive ways to do that and are even more effective
for part three and when itd be sick if i can watch the whole movie not pieces
How about living your life the way you like it and not giving a fuck if you've pissed somebody off or not?
Jim Morrison from The Doors started punk rock so this shit started in LA biiiiiaaaaacchhh!!!!!!!
I would have liked one about the crustpunk and grindcore movement but i guess that one is never going to be made.
Can anywone pass me the oline movie or something ? i need too see itttttt

thanksss
ur welcome
there are torrents online.
I agree.
Ok if it wasnt a bad thing then why the hell are they depressed for a good amount of the documentary? I saw the documentary, they didnt have a good time. In that subculture you either grow out of it or die at a very young age. I know plenty of people who were into it but grew out of it and are happier. I love punk rock like black flag and the ramones but I guess part of why this bugs me is plenty of people think that this is what punk is without realizing its a seperate subculture in punk
@avalanchesoul I think I get what you mean. My friend used to be in the punk scene and she realized that there were a difference between fake punks and true punks who actually stood for things they believed in...the punks in this video seem more fake to me.
the london calling shirt they have at hot topic. it looks like someone threw up a rainbow on it
man, sex pistols lived in the goddamn suburbs.
that's not punk then, that's just a fashion choice.
the documentary was actually good. this clip just happens to be one of the dumber ones. it is more about the squatters than it is about the music, though. i found it interesting, some people probably won't.
holy shit the dude on the far left at like 1:13 - 1:15 looks like joe strummer!!
I was joking about offspring. we were there to see much better bands
Looks like some peeps have been memorizing their Wikipedia history. Good on ya, mates.
hc will always be my music style I'm 42 now if bands can play who cares about the lyrics
i mean hot topics got some good tee shirts but the problem is everyone goes there thats why i either buy from electric chair or melrose but mostly swapmeets havent been to dr strange yet
PREACH BRATHA!!!!!
No like becoming a doctor instead of working at a factory
Can somebody please upload this fucking movie please ive already seen the first two oh and im not emo but dont you think if there was a 4th movie it would be based on them
Give me that microphone
@MiloRamone1 ehhhh, i wouldnt have ever considered green day gutter punks back in the day. sure, tre was in the lookouts at 14, they played @ gilman like fuckin daily, but there is no way in hell any of them had ever lived in a squat or spanged.
Posers ..punk isn't a fashion its a attitude! If you all want to dress a like join the army.
BOOORRRRRiiiiiiNNNNNNGGGGGG
u missed the germs
Real punks wouldn't need a script to say the release form of Decline, fuckjeez its burned in there.
@squidvicious27 no they werent, they were never punk.
Litmus green more spit more spit
yeah punk rock was different from 1979 is all the great 1st wave punk rock bands came out and darby was alive with the germs now ant punk was at its peak when the first decline was being filmed. these bands are still good i not the best only a couple but i recognized only 6 of the 7 bands dont know shit on catholic discipline should have been a better band like adolescents instead of them
Nope, I don't have a ps3. Thanks anyway, though!
yeah the 1st one is better then this but the 2nd one is the best
