    I studied medicine in Sweden and none of the medical schools in Sweden give out grades. Their reasoning is that they have a high standard for passing and that if you pass, you pass. You’ve either achieved enough to be a doctor or you haven’t. Employers can then differentiate later on based on other factors such as research, other specific merits/experiences and performance during clinical rotations or summer jobs. I agree with that logic, at least in medicine, but I know that lots of people don’t. I felt that it made it easier to work together with each other and support each other, and focus on learning for our future profession and not for a grade. I know that some people disagree though. Both arguing that grades motivate, and that they want a reward for getting good results. We did get scores on all our exams, so in theory you could use those to calculate some sort of hypothetical grade if you really wanted to.

      Thats a good system, but how do they determine who gets what specialty then? Who gets to be a neurosurgeon and who gets to be a GP if there are no grades or scores to go by?

    • @pollydowdlepolly
      @pollydowdlepolly 2 роки тому +46

      I really like that system, it removes a lot of intrinsic pressure within a high stress field like medicine.

    • @thirdoctoberchild
      @thirdoctoberchild 2 роки тому +31

      @@heidiheidi0 that’s a good question, and there are still issues to be resolved. A lot of it has to do with other merits. While in medical school we all complete a research project, and there are several elective courses. These can be used to show interest in and gain experience in a particular area. They also give the senior doctors and staff a chance to judge aptitude and skill. We also all complete about 2 years of foundation training and many do further work as junior doctors before being selected for residency/specialty training. References from that work experience are important. A remaining issue is that other factors do come into play, such as nepotism. It’s not perfect by any means. However, I don’t think that grades or test results from medical school are a reasonable way to assign specialty either. For instance neurosurgeons and GPs require different skill sets, interests and traits, which are not shown in overall grades, and one is not inherently easier than the other. They are difficult in different ways. Neurosurgery is just vastly more competitive.

      that’s how it is in the UK. it’s pass or fail because it would be dangerous if they allow people to operate or diagnose who didn’t reach the highest standard of education/studying/proficiency in medicine

    rubyyyyy!!! ahhh huge HUGE congratulations on finishing *a degree* (which we often forget when everything is so grade-focussed after final exams) and for such an incredible result! 🙌🏻✨
    I totally agree with everything you said afterwards upon reflection. feedback is so important (and ps: you’re so lucky your feedback was so detailed for your dissertation! for my master’s I had one very vague sentence which was disappointing 😅) and it is much more about *what* we actually learn. it’s sad because the education system does set us up to simply fixate on grades as the finish line, when in reality it really is about the process.
    anyway I’m rambling now but again i’m so happy for you!!! please please please be proud of yourself 💚

    I graduated back in 2011 with a First Class degree, and at the time I definitely felt the same about the numbered grades of each individual module. But now, over 10 years later, in the workplace, no one even knows what grade I got at uni, and definitely not at A Level or GCSE. I worked so hard during that time of my life, now it all feels like a bit of a waste. I wish I'd enjoyed my time more when I was younger rather than putting so much pressure on myself to get high grades as I felt so stressed out for so much of the time, rather than treasuring my youth! And whilst a good grade might help you get an interview, at the end of the day, they are looking at you as a whole person and how well you'd fit in with the current team. You come across as such an articulate, passionate and intelligent young woman and I know that is what will get you further in life rather than anything else!

    You know, guys, I also got top grades in everything I took and I graduated with honours from the university. But let me tell you that I found very soon that grades didn't matter at all at the job market. In my experience (here in the Czech Republic), no one ever cared about grades when I was looking for a job. It was crazy and frustrating. The only thing that matters here, in my experience, is a network and connections. I don't like it at all, but I can't do anything about it. I can assure you that many people with much worse grades get better jobs thanks to favouritism and nepotism. That's how it works. And I must say I strongly dislike this system. It's so unfair, but life isn't fair, is it? Good luck to all!

      When they called me and invited for the interview I was shocked.

    Congratulations! And an interesting reflection about the importance of grades. The reality is that, for most purposes (aside from some competitive careers), they don’t objectively matter A LOT. It’s more important how they affect YOU. I had a rollercoaster of an academic journey, failing my 2nd year, retaking exams after a year working and getting a 52, they deciding I wanted a first overall which meant averaging 78 in my final year. I nearly did it (77.5; 69 overall). Frustrating to miss out, but what I really learned was what I was capable of when I put my mind to it, and that’s been a lifelong gift. Looking forward to seeing where your hard work takes you!

Being marked down for a spelling debacle (or "depacle," one might say 😉) highlights the need to take care over spelling in future written work - as you correctly note, such attention to detail could be important to a prospective employer, and thus be the key to gaining a job.

      Lots of things goes into that, such as psychology, self-esteem, what people have with them from home of what’s deemed as important and will get applauded etc. Let’s remember also how society views higher education vs. not having a higher education. Smart/intelligent=valid and the opposite not so valid, this is what we’re taught from an early age and it takes lots for many people to break away from this mindset. I focused so much on grades as well, but ever since I started studying psychology at uni. the subject made me get it- that learning and knowing more things are fun and my worth as a human doesn’t align with my grades. Failing on a few exams also helped, because it made me live what I had built up and truly daunted. Failing forced me to try new things and to also examine why I was so hard on myself. To clearify these views I attached on myself, and I have never valued others based on their educational achievements. I guess it’s just easier to be hard on yourself. Looking up is always good because we are individuals and we do not feel or view things the same. /Scandinavian

      @@soilgrasswaterair Yes I definitely agree with you. I also don't blame Ruby or anyone for feeling this way. I'm definitely hard on myself too. I think my way of thinking mostly came from my parents, I had nowhere near as high of an education as Ruby but it really helped that my parents always told me that as long as I tried my best it didn't matter what my grades were. I'm glad you were able to learn this too, psychology is really interesting.

    Something which needs saying is employers on the whole don't look at the exact module marks you get, nor the percentage. Just the classification. Currently being on a year placement, I too this time last year thought the number meant everything but in reality - it doesn't. I've spoken to people in HR, line managers and others and the biggest thing to get you hired is your experience and personality at interview, that's what matters, not the number you got be it 70 or 99. So anyone reading this who is younger than 21, don't get hung up about the exact number you get, its what you do beyond and around your degree that matters in the real world, the vast majority of employers ask for a 2:1, that's what you need. Take it from my experience.

    I wish I'd known where the true value of things resides as well, but it's something you eventually learn throughout your career (that is, IF the person actually values learning, which does not always happen because of the system). Loved your insight, and the fact that you had to film several takes in spaced out days makes it even more genuine and overall gives an authentic, honest feel.
    You're a source of growth & light and I'm so happy to have more or less -on and off- followed your progress through the years. It inspires me so much in my own career. Thank you for sharing and enjoy your much needed rest! 💗💗

    I got my results for my journalism degree yesterday and I got first too! I'm very proud of what I've achieved, but as you said, the number isn't the most important thing. I'm more proud of how much I've pushed myself these last few years and allowed myself to do things out of my comfort zone.
    (On top of that, with the last three years having been affected by the pandemic, anyone graduating this year should be extremely proud as we've had a rough time of it. Go, class of 2022! 💖)
    Also, I want to thank you, Ruby, because believe it or not, your videos have really played a part in my study and wellbeing habits ever since my GCSEs. As well as your academic planners, which have seen me through the last two years!

    First of all: Congratulations! Glad you have good marks, you really worked hard for this. I've watched your channel for quite a while now, through your ups and downs and it's so great to see you thriving. Really shows that you always get rewarded eventually if you just work hard enough and believe in yourself.
    As a student with add who also works full time, your channel has helped me tremendously. It's not always easy to keep all things together and it might take longer for me to achieve my goals, but in the end I will get there. More importantly, it's about who you become though your journey.

    I had an English Comp prof mark down one of my best papers as “average”. So I stayed after class to talk with her about that. She said I could either accept the grade, or I could re-write it. I was angry but immediately chose to rewrite it. I turned in a new version a few days later, and she gave me the top grade for the class. She said: your first version was a very good paper but I needed to see what would happen if I pushed you. And you responded to that push by writing an even better paper.
    I took her first grade as a rejection. And I used my anger to fuel my work in a positive way. She gave me a life lesson that I’ve never forgotten. Rejection is not the end. It’s a new beginning. You might have to shift gears to find happiness and fulfillment, but that’s ok.

    Something I find pretty annoying when it comes to teachers/professors giving feedback on works, especially bigger once, is that they seem to disregard the fact that the student was given a word limit. What you choose to focus on is your decision, what your teachers/professors WANTED you to focus on is a complete different and separate thing (obviously in the case where the focus points aren’t specified in the task/assignment).

      you will learn that you have to kill your darlings and really focus on what's important. I already predicted in a previous video that Ruby will probably include too many things in her dissertation and therefore will get points deducted. that was totally predictable and people who've been in academia for a while know this. it's a pitfall many students fall into, especially when they are very passionate about their subject and are unable to critically review the primary literature

    • @eb663
      @eb663 2 роки тому +1

      Not true. I've marked assignments for years and I have never seen a student miss crucial information whilst simultaneously only dedicating words to important content. What I mean by this is that every time a student has failed to include information they needed for a higher mark, they have also wasted words on things they do not need to discuss, or on repeating themselves, or on using unnecessarily flowery language/phrasing. Your tutors/lecturers rarely have the time or the pay to show you every place where you could cut down your word use, but they are not discounting the constraints you had. They're just saying you didn't use your allotted words properly.

    i'm quite late to the discussion, but...
    my university professors don't usually give us feedback. some of them do, but very shallow-surface-level-"very good"-or"not quite"-sort-of-feedback. it's so sad! sometimes i feel like i'm just incompetent or incapable of learning.
    also, it's so interesting how much we, as a culture, seem to be reluctant when it comes to receiving feedback. i, personally, used to feel so depressed reading them. i'm learning how to channel that into a positive experience and learning opportunity. to all the students out there - the things you still don't know don't define you. i hope we can all absorve that. congratulations, ruby!

    Hi Ruby congratulations on your degree, from the subjects you mention it sounds absolutely fascinating! I just wanted to validate your feeling disappointed at the beginning. I think it’s important to feel into your honest reactions. You hold yourself to a high standard and you work really hard. So why would you not want that to be seen and reflected in your mark? When we give something everything we have we want to get back something empowering. There’s so much more I could say but I just wanted to say you have a right to that little pang of “oh, they didn’t see me” and that we all share this feeling at some or many times in our lives. After many occasions of this I began to choose to see and validate myself instead. That’s where the power is I think.

    I loved what you said about grades and feedback. At university in my country we often do not receive any feedback, just a grade. The feedback i've received is often very dry or looks for certain things in the paper (like "one idea per paragraph") and just ticks those boxes off. In secondary school we always got our exams back on our desk and could look through everything we'd written down and how it was marked, the teachers would also write (occasionally very long) comments on our report cards, which was the thing I most looked forward to. Now I receive my grades online without any comment and, even if they are really good, I just think "...okay?". It means sooo little without a personal reflection

    A first is an incredible achievement! The fact it's a 'low first' or a 'high first' doesn't matter, on your CV it will just show you worked hard and you're dedicated. And there's no reason to beat yourself up over getting a mark that's a little lower than you expected, because it's irrelevant, and it'll just take the joy out of what is a fantastic overall achievement. In life, celebrate the positives as much as you can, and do your best to not dwell on the disappointments. You should be your own best friend, and think - what would a best friend say? They'd congratulate and support me. I learned this the hard way throughout my life, always disappointed in myself, always focusing on 'failures' and it just leads to low self esteem and a general feeling of misery. As soon as you go, 'oh, that's no problem, just an opportunity to learn' you will never feel disappointed. As long as you enjoyed your course, and learned a lot along the way, and developed as a person, that's the biggest thing. You'll have enough people throughout your life telling you you're not good at this, or you can't do that, or you did that wrong, and the only way to combat it is to back yourself and be your own support. Bob Ross calls his mistakes 'happy accidents' because he creates something new and learns from them. I think that's very wise.
    You're brilliant, and you work so hard, so please never feel disappointed in yourself. 😊

    I just received the results for my first essay at an UK university (also first essay in English) and it is an 58. I know that's not very good but I'm still so proud. I was really surprised by that feeling because throughout my university years I was very fixated on grades. This time it was different. I'm out of university for a few years now and I took the course just for fun and because I really loved the topic. Writing an academic essay in English was way out of my comfort zone and the expectations are so different compared to my country (something I mostly found out through the feedback I got for the essay). I am just thankful that I had the chance to learn all the fascinating things I learned during this course and when writing the essay - and that's such an enjoyable experience compared to the pressure I felt in university.
