Peter, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy you and your videos. You seem to be a great guy. I was a ebay seller a a dozen or more years ago, (since 1998) and since then, an ebay buyer. Now I am cleaning out my house of 40 years of hobby stuff and listing it on ebay. I made $600 so far in the last few weeks. All thanks to your good advice. I'm in Naperville. Great advice, this is what I've been telling people for the last 7 years! I don't think it always sinks in, I know a few people turning over nearly a million a year doing big volume with slim margins but they are the exception. Most end up just being busy and earning as much as you would working at McDonalds. Keep up the awesome videos, always a pleasure to watch.
Since I've been watching your videos for the past month I realized what my new years resolution is. You have got me motivated to get out there and start putting my money to work, I realized that instead of having it sit in my savings account I could be flipping stuff on Ebay and have a better return on my investment, thanks for all the tips you're awesome :)

Wow this was a killer video Pete, I have been preaching this same song for years to others who ask me for help or advice and i tell them all the same thing, IF you are going to be a re seller and you want to do it full time and make it a career/business you have to do business and that means buying and re selling items, Now the trick is to always think numbers when buying items, Don't go after the low end items and volume. Try to go after higher end items and some volume. You want to always move stuff and get to the next item, Set a percentage of profit you want to shoot for and try to always stay at that profit point and you will do a lot better.

I hate when resellers answer my ads and lowball my products just so they can make a 10 dollar profit. I'm not a reseller, just trying to unload some of my goods. I had a Russian Baikal air pistol listed for $600 and I had ppl contacting me saying I would never be able to sell it for what I'm asking and offering me $400. I ended up selling it for what I was asking after only three weeks.
Cool you are getting into clothing! You could always do some road trips to the new GW outlet in Rockford that opened up this summer. Not too much of a drive from where you are! I wish I was closer to it! I'd be hitting it up at least once every week.

Joe Snes i may sound like a dick for doing this, but I always block potential customers who ask more than 1 question about a certain item im selling. I describe the item as accurately as possible and even though I answer my questions truthfully and politely, chances are that customer will be unsatisfied with the purchase for whatever reason and will end up asking for a return. Ive been burned so many times with customers like that so I just find it easier to avoid those kind of customers by blocking them.
Right?? Like I had this lady buy this old knife from me then she would not stop sending me messages on instructions to use it??? LIke what it's a knife it's made to cut stuff.
Unfortunately there are people who don't read descriptions or don't understand how to use an item before they purchase. Its just part of the business, there will always be problem buyers like that anywhere you sell. I just try to keep them to a minimum.
Joe Snes plus it blows my mind that eBay does not let the seller leave buyers negative feedback or anything, If there is a online transaction between two people there should be a way to Farley leave feedback. And when there is a problem you should only have to deal with eBay not PayPal also
I think if your plan or model is to obtain certain seasonal things off season when they are often plentiful and cheap, then listing them and waiting a year or so for the season is worth it ... plus, keeping seasonal stuff listed year round has it's bonus's too... but, it needs to be done intentionally... not willy nilly... it is easy to do things willy nilly in this business. I am currently accepting mostly higher ROI and faster moving things... but, I find THAT to be the challenge... I am training my mind to change what I find acceptable... I think that is the key to working smart. Not accepting those lower ROI items. This is going to be my focus for 2018 as one of my stepping stones to double my gross income for the year. I feel it is really believable and doable. Thanks for the pep talk Pete!
I aim to make just a very small profit each month to pay for my medication and the occasional luxury. I would rather hoard something than sell it for next to nothing. New items that I sell can only go up in value so I am not losing money by keeping hold of them. I won't be buying very cheap items in future though as you are right and it is alot of work for very little reward.
Good advice. Better advice here than 200 random reselling videos. On Ebay as a one person operation with no help you have to keep your average item price up high. I am at $50 right now on Ebay. New Amazon fees make it impossible to make a living selling book if only sourcing from thrifting and book sales. Their new fees are completely out of control. Living in Arizona my entire life, people think I am crazy but I want to see a winter, it is hard to get into the holiday spirit when you are in shorts and sandals.

Good topic! I see a local reseller her in my small town on ebay mostly doing 99 cent auctions and she's lucky to get over a couple bucks or mostly a few cents profit and possibly goes in the hole quite often and is just making money for Ebay and not herself. I think about all the work she puts into nicely photographing her items, very professional looking. I just feel like she sells herself short and doesn't value her time nor her items enough! She might even bee better off opening a new account so other buyers can not see in her feeback how cheap she was mostly letting her stuff go for to not kill future sales if she'd choose to change things up and stop doing mostly all low price starting auctions.
I still love Amazon. I like eBay too. I made about $500 this month on ebay... Small potatoes, yes. But my Ebay account is mainly for "mistakes" i've made on Amazon.. Things that were restricted, or simply not suitable for Amazon.
I hate selling clothes, nothing but complaints from people and it's hard to describe everything. They are the easiest thing to get negative feedback on and they bring shit profit unless you sell huge amounts of them, I don't think it's worth it for me!
I'm just a student trying to sell some stuff on Ebay on the side. I might start to pick it up If I find some success in it, But I'm just starting out. It would be cool if you could talk about people who are just starting from scratch, and have to work with the 10 item limit and building feedback and all that. You seem to only direct your messages to other established re-sellers and shop owners which not everyone is. But good advice in general, just not really related to my circumstance
Honestly as a beginner, here's a pro tip. Start off by selling stereo receivers/speakers. I originally started off selling clothing/lower priced stuff like Pete. But as I've sold more it's better to spend more($30 over $1) and make at least $100 profit.
Also just look over Pete's older videos, that't how I got into it as a current college student. Out of all these re-sellers Pete is the best because he does not fuck around with low priced items like all the other re-sellers
You could start by flipping your fellow classmates graphing calculators, granted you would have to time it right but that's one of the ways that got me into full time ebay

I agree with selling $25 and higher value items. Less work for same profit in the end. You've got a lot of clothing in bins. Are you targeting $25 for clothing?
Great video have to disagree a little. For new resellers which I am low ticket itiems are a great way to get your feet wet. And if I go sourcing for a week and pick up 10 items that would give me a profit of total profit of 300 dollars. which would be pretty good for me but not good enough. So I will when I am looking for the nice hits, pick up 30 itiems that have 10$ profit each. Now I am sitting at 600 dollars profit and only listed 40 itiems. Which is very doable for people getting started. You are an awesome individual I have learned so much from you. just thought I would share a thought keep up the good work.
It's my understanding that if you sell over 10K a year on Ebay, you get paperwork for your taxes sent to you and Ebay reports your earnings to the IRS. Seems like the decision from selling stuff for pocket money to running a business and paying taxes is something to really take into consideration.
That weather would be good for picking right? I figure only the diehard pickers would be out so you'd be more likely to get good items. I ask because I live in sunny Southern California and it's never snowed here in my lifetime.

A little late to his channel but I have come to this same realization. If I sell an item for $100 that cost $10 then why not get rid of 10 $1-2 items that are taking up space. I still have $100 but now it cost me $30. But I have saved time and space to go out and find another $100 in the future. I'm starting a Playlist called the Craigslist Hunter Greatest Hits! Thanks!
That is why you keep your costs down. That way you can just toss them into the trash, donate, or take them to the flea market after a few months of sitting on ebay. It will not even take a dent in your profits unless you deal with high dollar items.

I agree Pete, but it will be hard when there is like a 10$ item sitting there for 50 cents, its like how can I just pass that up? Its hard to find the 7$ to 70$, but relatively easy to find the 2$ to 10$, you know?
That's true, but unless you're doing volume, we really need to think about the time and extra costs to selling small items. Consider the fees and shipping involved in shipping 10 x $10 items versus 1 x $100 item. Yes, it might be easier to even find the 10 items, but time, focus, and fees on the back end are probably cutting into that profit more than we think.
Yard Sale Hunter The time your wasting picking/listing/shipping that item, you should be using to pick an item worth 5-10x more. Trust me, those items are sitting there as well.
You'll be earning less than minimum wage trying to flip $2-$10 items because there simply isn't enough profit to compensate for your time. The one and only exception would be if you're selling hundreds or thousands of the exact same item(s), and can dramatically streamline the selling process. Of course, they also have to be very fast sellers, or you'll still lose your ass by sitting on them forever.
Welcome to Northern where ever the hell you are. Yup its winter. I go to resale shops every few days depending on what I feel like. Less if the roads are bad. One thing I leared,we live in a material world. Everyone wants stuff. I pick up small engine stuff and fix and resell it. Not having a good winter selling snow throwers at all. Snow blowers yes,snow throwers,no. Lawn mowers are a good thing,weed wackers are hit and miss. You have room to store junk for resale. I dont,so thats that.
I buy wholesale and sell the same items over and over mostly. I've looked at clothing because I want to increase my margins but it just seems such a hassle. I see the return rate on clothing is so high.
Probably half of my store (800 items) is under $10, but since starting to list higher price items our sales profits and volume has increased. We're getting away from all that stuff now. Brother if you're getting into clothes and shoes you gotta come see me, my employer is Foot Locker and we have an employee warehouse sale once per year where we sell new shoes without the box for $10 each. It's very profitable for us, we usually spent $300 and come away with lots of easy to list inventory that sells nice and quick. I live up in Wisconsin, I got to come check out your shop sometime. Living in Arizona my entire life, people think I am crazy but I want to see a winter, it is hard to get into the holiday spirit when you are in shorts and sandals.

I moved $180,000 worth of stock on ebay this year :) on my own.
Taxes are ok, you have to remember to keep your paperwork in order, also when you keep buying it reduces your tax overheads.

Good topic! I see a local reseller her in my small town on ebay mostly doing 99 cent auctions and she's lucky to get over a couple bucks or mostly a few cents profit and possibly goes in the hole quite often and is just making money for Ebay and not herself. I think about all the work she puts into nicely photographing her items, very professional looking. I just feel like she sells herself short and doesn't value her time nor her items enough! She might even bee better off opening a new account so other buyers can not see in her feeback how cheap she was mostly letting her stuff go for to not kill future sales if she'd choose to change things up and stop doing mostly all low price starting auctions.
Sounds like she lacks any business sense. Just foolishly throwing her time and money away.
I still love Amazon. I like eBay too. I made about $500 this month on ebay... Small potatoes, yes. But my Ebay account is mainly for "mistakes" i've made on Amazon.. Things that were restricted, or simply not suitable for Amazon.
I hate selling clothes, nothing but complaints from people and it's hard to describe everything. They are the easiest thing to get negative feedback on and they bring shit profit unless you sell huge amounts of them, I don't think it's worth it for me!
The best deals I made where items I put a high price on and took more than a year to sell, but they sold for that premium.

I'm just a student trying to sell some stuff on Ebay on the side. I might start to pick it up If I find some success in it, But I'm just starting out. It would be cool if you could talk about people who are just starting from scratch, and have to work with the 10 item limit and building feedback and all that. You seem to only direct your messages to other established re-sellers and shop owners which not everyone is. But good advice in general, just not really related to my circumstance
Honestly as a beginner, here's a pro tip. Start off by selling stereo receivers/speakers. I originally started off selling clothing/lower priced stuff like Pete. But as I've sold more it's better to spend more($30 over $1) and make at least $100 profit.
Also just look over Pete's older videos, that't how I got into it as a current college student. Out of all these re-sellers Pete is the best because he does not fuck around with low priced items like all the other re-sellers
You could start by flipping your fellow classmates graphing calculators, granted you would have to time it right but that's one of the ways that got me into full time ebay

You can resell college books! Ask your classmates to donate or sell it for a small for you and you can resell it on ebay or amazon.

I agree with selling $25 and higher value items. Less work for same profit in the end. You've got a lot of clothing in bins. Are you targeting $25 for clothing?
Sandy Bo where do you find bins. I have 2 good wills by me I never seen a bin. Next time I should ask.
You want to search Goodwill Outlet Store. I think we only have 2 in all of Ohio. Before you travel, call to verify they sell by the pounds.

Great video have to disagree a little. For new resellers which I am low ticket itiems are a great way to get your feet wet. And if I go sourcing for a week and pick up 10 items that would give me a profit of total profit of 300 dollars. which would be pretty good for me but not good enough. So I will when I am looking for the nice hits, pick up 30 itiems that have 10$ profit each. Now I am sitting at 600 dollars profit and only listed 40 itiems. Which is very doable for people getting started. You are an awesome individual I have learned so much from you. just thought I would share a thought keep up the good work.
It's my understanding that if you sell over 10K a year on Ebay, you get paperwork for your taxes sent to you and Ebay reports your earnings to the IRS. Seems like the decision from selling stuff for pocket money to running a business and paying taxes is something to really take into consideration.

A little late to his channel but I have come to this same realization. If I sell an item for $100 that cost $10 then why not get rid of 10 $1-2 items that are taking up space. I still have $100 but now it cost me $30. But I have saved time and space to go out and find another $100 in the future. I'm starting a Playlist called the Craigslist Hunter Greatest Hits! Thanks!
That is why you keep your costs down. That way you can just toss them into the trash, donate, or take them to the flea market after a few months of sitting on ebay. It will not even take a dent in your profits unless you deal with high dollar items.
I have questions as I am in the process of re-doing my store.... getting rid of just what you talk about....Did you start with a certain catagory ( NIche type ) Or did you just find wide variety of items as you do now

items are really moving slow this time of the year unlike last year and true selling higher priced items are better than waiting for a small profit. I also get rid of items quickly if they don't move hate clutter in my area.

I agree Pete, but it will be hard when there is like a 10$ item sitting there for 50 cents, its like how can I just pass that up? Its hard to find the 7$ to 70$, but relatively easy to find the 2$ to 10$, you know?
That's true, but unless you're doing volume, we really need to think about the time and extra costs to selling small items. Consider the fees and shipping involved in shipping 10 x $10 items versus 1 x $100 item. Yes, it might be easier to even find the 10 items, but time, focus, and fees on the back end are probably cutting into that profit more than we think.
You just skip it, bud.

Yard Sale Hunter The time your wasting picking/listing/shipping that item, you should be using to pick an item worth 5-10x more. Trust me, those items are sitting there as well.
You'll be earning less than minimum wage trying to flip $2-$10 items because there simply isn't enough profit to compensate for your time. The one and only exception would be if you're selling hundreds or thousands of the exact same item(s), and can dramatically streamline the selling process. Of course, they also have to be very fast sellers, or you'll still lose your ass by sitting on them forever.
Welcome to Northern where ever the hell you are. Yup its winter. I go to resale shops every few days depending on what I feel like. Less if the roads are bad. One thing I leared,we live in a material world. Everyone wants stuff. I pick up small engine stuff and fix and resell it. Not having a good winter selling snow throwers at all. Snow blowers yes,snow throwers,no. Lawn mowers are a good thing,weed wackers are hit and miss. You have room to store junk for resale. I dont,so thats that.

Probably half of my store (800 items) is under $10, but since starting to list higher price items our sales profits and volume has increased. We're getting away from all that stuff now.
Brother if you're getting into clothes and shoes you gotta come see me, my employer is Foot Locker and we have an employee warehouse sale once per year where we sell new shoes without the box for $10 each. It's very profitable for us, we usually spent $300 and come away with lots of easy to list inventory that sells nice and quick. I live up in Wisconsin, I got to come check out your shop sometime.
