Damn. Just learned of his departure from this dimension. An unfathomable loss. This 10 minute video is in the upper echelon of musical creativity, and us lucky ones will all be returning to it forever. Rest easy Casey Benjamin. 🖤
Nooooooooo
I do not understand how people can say this man is a bad drummer. he is amazing. His off beat-ness sinks me into the grove rather than throwing me off. its just ever so slightly off. He has so much control and so much timing skills to pull off that kind of shit makes it so profoundly perfect.
Who says that? I think he's great.
drewbocop a lot of people on this video it seems which is a shame. hes amazing
I reckon the people knocking the drummer have little to no real knowledge of jazz. Not trying to be mean. Just pointing out that not everything in rhythm needs to be “4 on the floor” or suchlike.
He is nowhere near a jazz drummer, he's a gospel drummer
Daniel Cobar anybody who talks shit on his drum pattern has no knowledge of dilla. which means they get no respect from me lol
Not seeing anybody appreciate the creativity to hear nirvanas smell like teen spirit and to turn it into a jazz/ neo soul track. IN. SANE.
By far the most smells like cover i ever came acros
Illest tribute to Nirvana, and unites both Nirvana/rock fans and Jazz/Neo Soul/J Dilla fans
The Bad Plus do a great rendition, but this is so much more transformative.
@@47AdriRamiAKAETHG Dope comment!
This is argueably Robert's best track. Especially off of his Black Radio Album. Check out this version. ua-cam.com/video/MpyG69Uc0tg/v-deo.html
Glasper would never put up with a bad drummer. He's 100% intentional with every note.
You don't know what you're talking about.
I think that’s a complement to the drummer
The drummer is indeed playing off the beat. But, I think this is deliberate. Anyone familiar with the music of the late hip-hop producer J Dilla will understand what the drummer is doing.
Comment of the day sir!! Thank you- (rip dilla)
If you didn’t catch it the keyboard player is wearing a JDilla tee haha
@@AdventurousInsight thats Robert Glasper
Isnt the point of jazz to play off key/beat? Dont be a hater
This is the comment I was looking for. Thank you.
RIP Casey, you were an inspiration and hero to me.
If only we saw such performances on TV daily, if only such talent was pop culture.
Can't get enough of this one.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
u can say that again hey
Ikr.
@@silas9805 that's that Dangelo, Jay Dilla, Quest Love, Smcmilz, timing !
Facts, lady!
I was 5 feet away for this performance. Band was so tight. Musicians were so "in the moment." I was witness to a profoundly moving experience. They seemed to float away into the heavens. Watch Casey's face....ecstasy.
yes u get it too nice
Te envidio, Julio :)
Ill cry if i was there colenburg man
You lucky son of a gun. I would sell my left nut to see these cats live !!!
Fantastic, inspiring. Those who say the drummer is off, listen closely, the keys are even more off. It's on purpose, the only one who's on beat is the bass. It creates these awesome tensions. Also how understated but powerful as a result.
Eric Sopanen yep, in jazz only the bass keeps the tempo, I had to retrain myself as a drummer in college when I started playing jazz
Eric Sopanen I guess some don't comprehend its calls The Robert Glasper Experiment for a reason...and what an awesomely wonderful music experiment it is!
Yeah explaining the concept of a 'pocket' to non musicians and even a lot of non drummers is not easy
so funny or sad that someone would hear this as not perfect in its own right
theyre all "on beat" its just the piano and vocals are operating across longer frames than the bass
I love this so much. It sounds like the memory of a dream of a beautiful song, bounced off the surface of Mars, and received back on Earth, full of static, through a layer of low cloud in the night sky.
Damn... That was beautiful
@@ebberz813 Thank you. I had to try my best for them!
@@guydanielclotilde4861 Thanks Guy. I was wondering how to get friends to listen to these guys. Such an incredible piece of creativity. Made me try hard! I class myself lucky to live in the same world as them.
Seriously poetic!❤
@@mawalls2001 Thanks Mawalls. I was highly motivated!
This is not for the entry level Jazz listener. If you look through the comments , the folks who are familiar with Jazz really appreciate and understand the greatness of this performance. It reminds me of when my friends were first introducing me to metal. I just didn’t get it. But, after finding a few songs I liked, I began to understand the more complex forms. I started to understand the changes and how the artists will build a song. Now I love metal and no matter how complex the patterns I can catch the vibe the musicians are going for. It’s no different with Jazz. It takes a familiarity with the genre sometimes to understand and appreciate what is going on. The ahead of the beat, behind the beat ebb and flow of what the drummer brings is virtuoso level. I’m a drummer and what he is doing takes sooooo much control and knowledge of soundscape. To the untrained ear it’s sounds wrong, but to those is us who have spent time with the legends and tried to play behind or ahead of the beat know this is genius level shit.
I love how they incorporated 3 different jdilla tracks in this. the beginning of the song was (HOLD TIGHT q-tip) , then they did (SHAKE IT DOWN) then ended with (THELONIOUS common) all produced by Jay Dee
thank you
That's some music history you're tuning into brother!
and (FUCK THE POLICE)
Well done young
Its insane
his version of this iconic song is such a beautiful blend of art forms. I think Kurt Cobain would've been proud.:-)
Jet Washington Dani Martín q bonita es la vida
Rest In Peace Casey!!! Your art and life will never be forget!!! You were a GIFT for all of us!!! Legend!!!
that drummer has got it going on
Absolutely.
YES.
Mark Kolenberg, have a gander my man
I think it's Chris Dave. Forgive me if I'm incorrect
Mark Colenburg as at 6:37
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
Hope you're feeling better Kim
hey thats kim jong! hey there, Kim. any update on your nuke project? or movie hackings? lol peace love you kim ./.
북녘의 돼지도 즐기는 로버트 글래스퍼 익스페리먼트! 모두 즐겨용! (Even a pig of North Korea enjoys Robert Glasper`s music!)
I knew you was smart.
I'll take kim over Trump in my sleep. At least he's doing something besides tweeting all day.
Honestly, Robert Glasper is a truly talented man, brilliant jazz pianist.
what is so awesome about this is that each sound is playing its own independent melody but it is all gelled together as one. Robert Glasper is truly a musical genius.
R.I.P Casey Benjamin 🙏🏽 gone but not forgotten 😢🙏🏽 1:23
Yessir! This joint spans musical time and genre, with the obvious ode to Nirvana. Anyone peep the nod Dilla with the intro drum pattern from "Hold Tight" sampled from "What Makes You Happy by KC & the Sunshine Band" and the main groove and chords coming from the same version of " Hold Tight" sampled from Cannonball Adderly's "An Expericence in E". Not to mention the bassist's movement from "Nautilus" and at 5:50 something vaguely reminiscent of Groove Theory or some mid 90's Post Acid-Jazz vibe. And of course that refrain to "Thelonious" or was it George Duke's "Vulcan Mind Probe" on the outro. A masterpiece in musical history of the past few decades. Salute
Give this guy a cookie! You're my new best friend. Good ears.
Also RG is wearing a Jay Dee tee 😉😊
I LOOOVE your analysis ... you have a great memory + ear and are MAD thorough!! 🎼🎶🎹🎷🎸🎺🎤💿🎧
hell yeah
Lol. Man glad y'all felt it too. Yo Rob G, wherever you are in the ether, can i swap the cookie for a ticket to the sold out London Jazz Fest show at KoKo next month?😊
I wish I could help :-) he was here in DC at the Kennedy Center about two years back and I know until it was too late.
i may be 58 years old, but i know neo-innovation & ultra talent when i hear it. dis it. herbie hancock's vocoder use from the 70s inspired this. bravo & brill rebirth!!
This has been my drug for the last 3 months. Such a beautiful rendition.
hey hey are you here? Can we listen to this again? :)
charlie hunter trio come as you are check out this older jazz trio
The snare is on time. Then he places the hi hat and kick sometimes a little behind and sometimes a little ahead creating tension as we’ll release. They’re playing in floating layers, going in and out of grooves. Can’t you feel it???
Like the image of floating layers. Perfect.
Rest easy Mr. Casey Benjamin! 🙏🏾
As an improvising musician, I know that if ever I think these guys are playing off tempo, it's because I've gotta do some work and understand how they are splitting the time so finely or playing cross rhythms. They offer us the chance to raise our listening to a higher level.
7 years ago no vids. Improvise me something I'll watch. I promise
Yes...simply amazing to the ear and the spirit. We get it! Highly Skilled Musical Geniuses. Listen...no textbooks needed! Ya know whatcha know!
👍💯 Yes. U got to get in the music by feeling it & not try to label it. A good musician that feels his way can take one song / composition & play it in every style and genre known to man on planet Earth 🌎. How so❓ Bcuz music has no boundaries & no limitations except for those boundaries & limitations of which man ignorantly bestows upon it with human / man-made labels & analyzations. Every sound in the universe & beyond is music
🤣
@@Daplin1Everytthing is improvised at some point.
This is beautiful. I've had this on repeat for weeks now. I wish Kurt could've heard this here on earth
+Jason Goforth Me too. I miss him.
Why? Neither of you knew him, just a media representation of him. Kurt would tell you both, “Stop Living in the past”
@Jason Goforth: you are so right! Blues know no boundaries, no colours. Kurt would be so proud indeed.
@@jnnxdamn you know what a deceased person would say! jog on will you
hes playing off beat intentionally. This is some of the most progressive drumming in the world right now. if you dont get it your ears are not ready.
Banging on the Ivories facts !!! It’s unfortunate if your ears can’t pick it up!!
Yep just like piano in "in case you forgot" on the Capitol records performance
*Capitol Studios* sorry
Amen the brother establishes a groove then dances all around it. What he is doing takes tremendous talent and a complete understanding of time and rhythm.
Yes
RIP Casey ❤ (this will forever be my favorite live music video performance ever made)
HOLY FUCK drummer’s hat work on the second verse… dude is WORKIN’ and brings it down so controlled and softly.
Dam! That's a beautiful version of the song that plunged the world into the chaos we know as grunge rock. Is there a love button instead of like?
There is a "LOVE" button. It's called Purchase Robert Glaspers Music
@@MrPuncy got him
THis aint neva aging! there's something so special about an RGE Live performance...RWP CB
Man, Derrick Hodge is such a beast
Bass man thump
Nice work
Yeah the brother is really cold!
Artistically impressive..i can appreciate this all the way around. Drums and piano are killing it.
I think they showed Nirvana major love with this one. Dope!
the vocoder is so amazing
Art hitting me in the face. Thanks to the musicians who put this together. We need this!

But: drums? bass? piano?
gmafx they announce themselves at the end.
5:49 My man Derrick referencing Keni Burke - Risin' To The Top!
8:26 too, Casey Benjamin referencing the backing vocals to the same track.
I absolutely ADORE this rendition of this song because I keep on finding so many references after every listen! BIG UPS!
There's even more but i'm not bothered to do it all lmao
This gives me goosebumps. Woah.
Shocked 😳 RIP Casey Benjamin. I loved your music style and your smile. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
At 4:20 the bass line comes from Bob James' song "Nautilus"...this whole cover of Nirvana's classic song is amazing.
HOW have I not heard this before now just tremendous..... huge Nirvana fan but also huge jazz fan and to see them combined in such a manner is just incredible....
This will hit differently 😇
What an awesome drummer.
So slept on, this deserves way more views
This is abstract music folks, real musicians who use all the increments that makes up a whole note. Primal thinking assumes that the drummer is off at times, wrong, those chops are deliberate and rather tight. The drummer is cold. There are also a lot of overlays going on including; poly rhythms, half-time, double -time and 6 over 4 timing.
The drummer is a friggin genius.
Whatever vocal effects he's using absolutely kills this for me.
I play this at least once a month and usually during dinner so my kids can absorb its greatness.
I just totally love Robert Glasper Experiment!!
The drummer is phenomenal. It’s deliberate of course…The pushing and dragging and fragmentation of the beat are what makes coming back to the straight ahead groove (second chorus) feel so good and make you bob your head. Love the free-form fast high hat on the second verse. So creative
God, it's so soft and lovely and bubbly but it carries just as much energy as the original song. I love this so much
I swear I watch this like once a week. Everything about it is so subtle and perfect.
I can't stop listening to this. It's beautiful. Just in pure awe
RIP Casey Benjamin. A musical genius gone way too soon 💔
Here again to listen to the amazing beats of the drummer and his phenomenal groove. I never get tired of it.
And for this gift, i'm truly blesssssseeddd
First of all I absolutely love the original song but this here......... I loved how all the musicians came together and we're apart at the same time. Anyone thinking it sounds off has to listen a little closer. Sounds fantastic.
Dope..great music,..Casey..I will miss your beautiful voice, what a loss to as all. We love your music Robert Glasper. The drummer kills everything.
Rest East Legend.Watching from Lusaka,Zambia ,Africa🇿🇲🇿🇲🇿🇲🇿🇲
Black Radio is forever on rotation in my home. Fantastic performance. I really wish they would come to my area
Absolutely amazes me how talented they all are. This is true music....
Glasper The Great
J Dilla drum cadence "Hold Tight" Fan-tas-tic Vol. II. Robert Glasper is the jazz equivalent.
good call..
This is dope! Life imitating art. I love the 'sampled' feel.
WOOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!! I cant belive what i'm hearing.
people who listen to a lot of heavy hip hop especially dilla influenced hip hop understands what he's doing immediately. he's actually in rythym he just chooses to come in on the up beat, the "e", the "uh" ect.. according to rhythmic notation! that's what i love about mark and Chris! they have a deeper understanding of time to the point where people misunderstand them completely!
its called playing on the " back of the beat "....... but 1 would have to know music to fully grasp the concept. the very reason J Dilla became the beast in the room
that synocpation...the vibe....funky dope
This reaches new levels of inspiration. Phenomenal
SOOOOO much talent on that stage!!!!!!!!
those fellas had the stagger swagger.... beautiful!
That slayed this song. On some real ish. On your way to work, blast this song and watch how much production gets accomplished during the day. Salute 🫡
2020 still jammin to this!!!
Pure passion!!! Use your creation gift!!!!
I keep coming back to that drum and bass intro.....that first minute simply does it for me and makes me want to be like let's see where this goes!
This is so weird!! But I can't stop listening or moving my body to it!! WHAT IS THIS??
In love
Queen X Jazz Neo Soul fusion hun. At least I think so. ;)
Maricel Austria Lol thank you!
Queen X Also known as music.
been listening to this every day
Artistically impressive..i can appreciate this all the way around. Drums and piano are killing it.
Oh noooo!!! This can’t be!😢😢😢 I fell in love with this form of artistry and Robert Glasper because of you Casey!🥹 I will be performing this exact project in 2 days!! My heart is heavy right now! Rest easy Casey until we meet again!!❤️❤️🙏🏽
heard them yesterday live. Twas amazing especially Mark Colenburg. Great band.
The drum's is 🔥🔥🔥
words....just can't explain how this makes me feel ....UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!
Really digging this track. Same for the Jay-Dee shirt
I never would've imagined that melody working in any other harmonic context but this definitely does it for me!
Great job. I like his rendition. I also like J*Davy's version.
Didn't even know J*Davey has a version. That's the beauty of the comment section!
Simply amazing 🔥🔥Casey RIP Benjamin 🕊️
Love you Casey thank you
Genius, every note and beat is with intent…
drummer is a beast holy shit
So much love for this cover.
What an amazing rendition of an already amazing song! Best "cover" of this song I've ever heard!
This song takes me places unimaginable...
What a beautiful rendition!
Everything is syncopated perfectly the drummer coming on first set the Rhythm he is definitely on time
Incredible work. Just imagine how that would be played by Prince. Impressed.
Who hasn't Robert Glasper collaborated with. So much talent. I would suggest the artist Sir. & Snoh Algebra. With do a great addition to such a variety of awesome repertoire of artists you have already .Bravo!
I just saw him live this past weekend, and his group mesmerized me.
This is some damn funky stöff.....
This is one of my favorite performances of all time. Mark Colenburg is an absolute beast and tbh this version is better than the one with Chris Dave and obviously better than the original song. It's okay to disagree, but just know it's also okay to be wrong ;)
Amazing crew/version/flying ticket gift ❤
Those are the crispest. most beautiful hi-hats I've ever heard!
