Really rather than the the nuclear weapon button being a "You Lose", there should be a Crisis Escalation mechanic that is determined by multiple factors - including WMDs but also the fall of various cities (specifically near the Polish border). Ukraine could have escalation as well, like bombing Russian soil or inviting NATO aligned troops. Tactical nukes would be on a medium level, and global nuclear war would be the end of the escalation ladder. Both sides would have to watch the escalation mechanic, as it getting too high for Ukraine means the Russians nuke you and if it gets too high for Russia then NATO deploys troops or creates no fly zones.

24:10 You are correct that superior technology/equipment means victory. The failings of Vietnam are plentiful but I don’t think it necessarily shows that a technologically inferior force can absolutely decimate a superior one, but instead that defending is far, far easier than attacking.
Vietnam is jungle, and the US was not only fighting a conventional war but also a guérilla one. What the last few decades has shown is that large militaries are susceptible to guérilla tactics for many reasons. The terrain in Vietnam was super beneficial for the Vietcong, as they could hide traps and themselves anywhere and whittle away at US forces. Additionally, the war was highly unpopular in America, and higher levels of mobilization were impossible if the administration at the time wanted to stay in power.
The most important factor, however, was the reality of a Cold War proxy conflict. The US could not step boots into North Vietnam without Soviet retaliation. The most they could do is bomb the North, and that just wasn’t enough. The Vietcong was spread out and decentralized, and couldn’t be easily brought to their knees with a bombing campaign.
Suffice to say, Vietnam is a lesson that good equipment doesn’t win wars by itself. It shows that it’s doctrine, strategy, war support, troop morale, and logistics that win them. In the instance of Russia fighting NATO, they have none of those advantages. NATO has had decades more experience with warfare than the current Russian government, and the industrial might of the West is simply insurmountable. NATO is the combined military strength and knowledge of most of the worlds leading powers, having been a part of multiple conflicts since WW2. Russia, even if we’re including the Soviets, haven’t been in many since WW2. Ukraine is holding the Russians with the aid of just a bit of NATO equipment. What would actually well trained, well equipped, and well supplied Western troops do to Russia that couldn’t be described as Mike Tyson decking a toddler.
Don’t even get me started with the air war. Russia wasn’t able to get aerial superiority over Ukraine. Air wins modern warfare, and the United States ALONE has the largest air force on the planet. The second largest? The US Navy. The F-22s will have a fucking field day if they finally get to shred Russian fighters.
Hell, Western Russia is flat plains, and that is damn hard land to defend.
I give them 6 months, maybe. The only issue is, well. The bombs. Luckily my girlfriends hyperfixation is collecting bottle caps, so I will be absolutely loaded.

Fun fact, modern guerrilla warfare like in vietnam and afghanistan only worked because of the Geneva Convention. Historically guerrilla groups would be destroyed through genociding the local populace, very good example of that being the Romans in Judea, Illyria and in Gaul with the deaths ranging from 500k in judea to 1 million dead and another 1 million sold to slavery in Gaul.

    • @ryujin9568
      @ryujin9568 4 місяці тому

Another example is the Harrying of the North in the winter of 1069-1070, where the bastard of Normandy subjugated Northumberland by killing 75% of the population, according to the Domesday Book written in 1086. There was also reports of people engaging in cannibalism, eating normally taboo animals like cats and dogs, and even people selling themselves into slavery in a desperate attempt to avoid the conquerors wrath.
50 years later the chronicler Orderic Vitalis wrote: "The King stopped at nothing to hunt his enemies. He cut down many people and destroyed homes and land. Nowhere else had he shown such cruelty. This made a real change. To his shame, William made no effort to control his fury, punishing the innocent with the guilty. He ordered that crops and herds, tools and food be burned to ashes. More than 100,000 people perished of starvation. I have often praised William in this book, but I can say nothing good about this brutal slaughter. God will punish him".

Not if the populace is being armed with guns. All it takes is some other nation with a bunch of stuff at its disposal to very much break your whole wartime strategy.

    • @misaka3468
      @misaka3468 4 місяці тому

@donaldtrumplover2254 they still need food, which most of would be sourced locally and nothing prevents you from destroying all crops and killing all livestock with aircraft. Depending on the end goal the conqueror has in mind the local populace is better off dead and replaced with settlers and colonists once the dust has settled.
Even if the populace is armed they won't be able to do anything against an opponent that doesn't need them or plan to keep them alive. Afghanistan for example was a war to replace the government structure of the country, which meant the Soviets and the Americans needed the population of Afghanistan alive.

Russia doesn’t have many stealth aircraft and do they even have weapons for them, i.e the ones you can put in their weapons bay. Russian Armed Forces was extremely devastated by the war in Ukraine, they won’t be able to fight NATO at all.

The Russians don't have the Viet Cong and a complicit American media industry doing a double-whammy attack on domestic morale, and even if they had those kinds of assets it wouldn't change the fact that Poland by itself would be enough of a hurdle that the Russians would have essentially no chance to even go for a Blitzkrieg-style quick victory.

That's why Russian troops had to pull back, they weren't expecting Ukraine to not hold to their part of the agreement.

Because I am totally normal I am actually going to talk about why I don't think Russia could win a war against NATO.
    1. Geography: Russia has the very unfortunate situation of its entire heartland existing in the Great Northern European Plain, which stretches from the coastlines of France all the way to the Urals. Now this does give Russia some advantages as well, they could if lucky speed through Northern Europe, Crushing Poland and the Baltics, and quickly making their way through Germany, but this quickly leads to a big problem, the frontline would become overstretched. Having a Frontline from Romania to Western Europe would be extremely costly to maintain, sending resources so far through such a small region, not to mention all of that would be within bombing distance, making it even harder. Furthermore this doesn't consider other geographical features like rivers and mountains, which are great for defense, but awful for assaulting. NATO would have partial or complete control of the Vistula, Oder, Elbe, Danube, Rhine, Seine, Loire, Rhone, Po, Garonne, Ebro, and Tagus rivers, and those are just the big ones; not to mention all the mountain ranges like the Carpathians, Alps, Pyrenees, Balkans, and the Apennines. This would be a nightmare for the Russians to deal with, but that wouldn't be all. The Russians would also have to fight multiple fronts because of said Geography, the could be fighting in Northern Europe, Eastern Europe, The Balkans, possibly Anatolia, and the Far East (if the US decides to cross from Alaska to said Far East, though this might not be a good idea, Far East would be useless to invade as there is only one route from there to the west and it is a singular train track).
    2. Home Advantage/threat to way of life: The European members of NATO would have home advantage, using their knowledge of roads, rivers, towns, cities, hills, etc. to be able to stall the Russians, plus civilians would most likely set up militias and sabotage Russian efforts, effectively stalling the Russian advance. Furthermore, people are much more likely to fight for their own countries survival than people think, the Polish Resistance and the French Resistance come to mind for most, but it happens in many countries. People are much more likely to take up arms and die if they think their way of life is genuinely in danger, for example the only time in Australian history that conscription was accepted, and the only time US soldiers were allowed to operate in Australia, was right after Japan had invaded the entire pacific, and Darwin was bombed. I am sure the peoples of Germany and France would go and sign up because their nations ideals would be at risk.
    3. Cohesion: NATO isn't just an alliance, it is an entire military command structure, with a well detailed and highly trained and effective military force that has had 70 odd years of constant training, with so many nations in play they had to make sure the entire system worked, and while we haven't seen NATO fight a conventional war, they seem to operate in training very well, and I am sure they have perfected the art of cohesion, something Russia is... lacking.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk that probably no one will see.

I’ve been following the war in Ukraine for the past year pretty closely while also catching up on the history of the conflict, Russia, Ukraine and all the other associated parties. I don’t think they can truly “Win” the war in Ukraine let alone against NATO.
    1. Incompetence
The most obvious thing I want to mention is how poor the performance of the Russian army has been up to this point. As it stands right now Russia has sacrificed 470,000 combat casualties, thousands of armored vehicles and tanks, hundreds of aircraft (including a few of the A50 early warning aircraft Russia uses that cost boatloads of money), and a countless amount of equipment. All of these had been for a few hundred square kilometers of Ukraine a country with a small fraction of its population. Not only this but their commanders do not even follow their own fighting doctrine designed for the Russians. This may change with the shuffling and moving of Shoigu but I doubt it. People thought Ukraine would fall in 3 days before the war and that Russia was the second best military in the world. We know now that couldn’t be further from the truth.
    2. A failing economy
A large portion of the Russian economy is supported by oil. Since early in the war Ukraine has wreaked havoc on Russian oil refineries using cheap kamikaze and modified small planes. Dropping Russia output of refined petroleum products 25%. This has lowered the cost of crude oil around the world as Russia is forced to export it for less than they otherwise would be able to. Not only this but while sanctions haven’t been 100% effective they have crippled the Russia war effort and forced them to get “dual use” equipment from China.
    3. Western Economic and Political soft power.
The majority of western countries are not currently operating in a war economy. Even so with the western countries only donating .2% (US) to like 4-5% (Estonia) of their total GDP to Ukraine and the damage it has done has been insane. The sanctions have also done damage to the Russian economy and isolated Russians. The west is waking up and realizing what Putin wants and is showing unity. Letting Putin know that we won’t get tired of this war and we will defend democracy no matter what the cost. Which brings me to my next point.
    4. The will to fight.
It is a lot easier to fight a war of attrition when you are fighting for a cause. This is something the Ukrainians have the advantage in (and NATO would too as I cannot see NATO ever making the first move in a war like this) and will likely continue to for the duration of the war as they have been fighting since 2014. Russia is the invader in this war and that mindset is going to keep your soldiers from being as effective as they could be. This is a mindset that is catching up to Russian soldiers as they murder their fellow slavs.
I know you mentioned Vietnam and America but the difference between this and the Russo Ukraine war is in this. The Ukrainians and the Vietnamese have that sweet home field advantage and moral boost. Combine this with.
    5. Western Military technology and doctrine superiority
The average Russian soldier doesn’t even have proper body armor or a ballistic helmet, a AK platform rifle pulled out a humid factory with some ammo made in the 90s, and a week or two of training if that. Compare the to the average Ukrainian soldier who is not only much more well equipped (modern optics, armor, rifles etc) but significantly better trained. This is reflected in how Ukraine values their soldiers compared to the Russians who don’t even collect their dead alot of the times. Ukraine also has access to some of the best military vehicles made in the last 30 years too. F16s will arrive next month in June or early July. Bradley’s are plentiful. HIMARS and patriot systems. Javelins don’t forget that because Russian tanks are especially vulnerable to top strikes from them because of how the ammunition is stored. The list goes on and on and as long as western weapons keep coming in I just don’t see Russia achieving their war goals.
Also I know you mentioned specifically France being unwilling to fight. But what’s wild is France is one of the few Western countries who has said specifically that French boots on the ground in combat roles is not off the table.
    6. The Russian home front
We saw during the election in Russia recently that there are a good amount of Russian citizens who are unhappy with the war and their government. There is even a group of Russians fighting for Ukraine called the Freedom of Russia legion who fights for democratic Russia. Widows continue to be denied death benefits for their dead spouses. Some of them don’t even know where their husbands are. Some have been dead for months and the Russian government denies it. While it may not lead to any revolution or coup it will create instability at home and curb their will to fight. Because Russians are dying alot of them are 3-4 for every Ukrainian.
    7. Bonus
Russia has a lower GDP than California state and is close to the GDP of New York State.
The bottom line is Russia already believes they are fighting NATO while just engaging Ukraine and are not doing so hot. So I don’t believe there is any way they could win a conventional war against NATO. That doesn’t mean they won’t try though and it will be extremely ugly if they do.
Just to be clear too I don’t not see Ukraine winning in a traditional sense either. I think the war ends with crimea, the donbass and Luhansk’s all in Russian control. That’s a hard pill to swallow for Ukraine but that may be the price for peace. Personally I think they should try to recapture ALL of their territories as it IS UKRAINE. But I don’t find it realistic or feasible at this moment in time. Who knows maybe F-16s will change the game and Ukraine can get air superior idk.

forgive me for lacking proper citations, but i got this information from a History Legends video on the combat capabilities of NATO
probably try looking up “History Legends France 25%”
but to summarize what he said in that video, only 25% of france’s entire military is combat capable, i also heard from Philip DeFranco (Who is very Pro-Ukraine) that the UK’s military is barely, if even a teir 1 military anymore
these are the two strongest continental forces in europe excluding Germany (who, from reports from Col. Douglass MacGregor Ret., don’t even want to fight Russia) and they are in complete disrepair
the only actual force capable of fighting russia right now would be the US, if even, as Russian soldiers are now battle-hardened and have won multiple battles in Ukraine
      as one person put it
“Regardless of who wins this war, Russia and Ukraine will be the two strongest militaries on the planet, because they’re the only ones who will know true war”
