Comic Book Text Effect - Photoshop Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лип 2024
- This is a beginner-level tutorial for creating a comic book text effect in Photoshop. The first part of the video will concentrate on creating a fun background for the text to sit on, while the second half will focus on creating the text effect itself. Once created, the text will remain fully editable, meaning you can change the text at any time without having to recreate the entire effect.
Also, since the effect is created using ONLY layer styles, you can save the layer style for use elsewhere.

►FULL INSTRUCTIONS◄
Create a new document 3840 x 2160 @ 150DPI
**Creating the Background Elements**
Fill the background with a light blue color (3c93dd), unlock the layer and rename the layer “Background”.
Now, create a halftone pattern.
1. Set your colors to default B&W (D) and then switch the colors (X) so that white is your foreground color and black is the background color.
2. Create a new layer (Ctrl + Alt + Shift +N) and name it “Halftone”
3. Select your Gradient tool (G), set the gradient to foreground/background (the first gradient choice), Gradient Type=Radial, and draw a gradient from the center of the image to the outermost edge
4. Go to Filter - Pixelate - Color Halftone
a. Max Radius 30, everything else 0
b. Change layer blend mode to “Overlay” and Opacity to 50%
Now for the Burst.
1. Create a new layer and name it “Burst”
2. Select the Polygon tool (U).
3. Click once anywhere in the image to bring up the Create Polygon dialogue box and fill it out as follows
a. Width=3000, Height=1500, # sides=20, Smooth corners=UNCHECKED, Star=CHECKED, Indent sides=90%, Smooth Indents=CHECKED
4. Center the burst and resize it to fill most of the screen
5. Apply an Inner Glow to the burst layer
a. Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=100%, Noise=0, Color=Black (000000)
b. Technique=Softer, Edge=CHECKED, Choke=100%, Size=28
c. Contour=Smooth, Anti-Aliased=Unchecked, Range=100, Jitter=0
d. Set the layer’s FILL OPACITY to 75%
Select all three layers and group them together (Ctrl + G). Name this group “Background Elements”
**Creating the Text**
I’m using ObelixPro Regular, but any comic-ish font will do.
Create a new layer outside your Background Elements group (Ctrl + Alt + Shift +N).
Select your text tool (T) and type in your text, making the font large enough to fill most of the burst. Now is the time to alter any spacing issues you may have between the letters by placing your text tool in between the letters and using (Alt + Left/Right Arrow)
Now apply the layer styles to the text layer:
1. Stroke, with special gradient
a. Size=4, Position=Center, Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=90, Overprint=CHECKED.
b. Gradient, Black color (000000), Opacity=100% at the 25% marker, Opacity=0% at the 30% marker, Opacity=0% at the 70% marker, Opacity 100% at the 75% marker
c. Gradient Style=Linear, Align with Layer=CHECKED, Angle=94, Dither=UNCHECKED, Scale=100%
2. Inner Shadow 1 with “Ring” contour
a. Black color (000000)
b. Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=100%, Angle=163, Global Light=UNCHECKED, Distance=3, Choke=100%, Size=3
c. Contour=Ring Double, Anti-aliased=UNCHECKED, Noise=100%
3. Inner Shadow 2 with “Ring” contour
a. Black color (000000)
b. Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=100%, Angle=22, Global Light=UNCHECKED, Distance=2, Choke=100%, Size=1
c. Contour=Ring Double, Anti-aliased=UNCHECKED, Noise=100%
4. Gradient Overlay with custom color gradient
a. Blend Mode=Normal, Dither=UNCHECKED, Opacity=100%
b. Gradient = Gold (ffb20a) to Red (ff1e00), Reverse=UNCHECKED
c. Style=Linear, Align with Layer=CHECKED, Angle=90, Scale=100%
5. Drop Shadow 1 White
a. White color (FFFFFF)
b. Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=100%, Angle=90, Global Light=UNCHECKED, Distance=10, Spread=100%, Size=16
c. Contour=Linear, Anti-aliased=UNCHECKED, Noise=0%
d. Layer Knocks out Drop Shadow=UNCHECKED
6. Drop Shadow 2 Black
a. Black color (000000)
b. Blend Mode=Normal, Opacity=100%, Angle=90, Global Light=UNCHECKED, Distance=46, Spread=100%, Size=59
c. Contour=Linear, Anti-aliased=UNCHECKED, Noise=0%
d. Layer Knocks out Drop Shadow=UNCHECKED
Finishing touch is a slight warp to the text using the “Warp Text” tool. Make a subtle arch of +15%.

Amazing tutorial! I'm working with CS6, and when working with the text and adding gradients and drop shadows I don't have the "+" next to either option. How would I add those to get your exact effect?
Thanks for watching. It's been a while since I've used CS6, but I recall using nested groups to create similar effects. If keeping the final text editable isn't important, you could apply the bulk of the layer styles on one text layer, then duplicate the text, clear the styles and apply the missing styles. Then right click the layer and convert the missing styles to their own layer. Doing that for each layer style and then stacking them properly should work.
I am looking for information on Photoshop, and I find it pretty amusing...
t really like u. u can post the psd?
Great tutorial so far. I'm using CS5 and have just arrived at the creating a polygon stage. CS5 doesn't automatically give a pre polygon menu, and I can't find how to change the settings, do you know if its possible.
+Jamie Budkiewicz
Thank you for watching my tutorial. The options for creating a star in CS5 are found under the Polygon Tool in the options bar at the top of the work area. To access them, select the Polygon Tool and then click the little arrow next to the blob that represents "Custom Shape". There you will find options for Radius, Smooth Corners, and a checkbox for "Star". There will also be options for indenting the star's sides by a percentage of the radius of the shape, as well as a checkbox for smoothing the indentation.
Thanks!!!!!
You are very welcome.
I keep getting little lines on all my shapes, and grey areas imgur.com/YDg0XdI Any idea how to solve this?
Thank you for this video. Your tutorial is simple and easy to follow unlike other videos I've seen. Though the Photoshop I am using is older than the one you use. I still was able to learn quite a bit. You get a Like and a Subscribe from me sir.
My gradient on the stroke is transparent in the center, however its vertical not horizontal. Meaning the left and right sides of the text have the stroke but the center does not. Rather than top and bottom having it.
Andrew, I think you might have the gradient angle set to 0 instead of 94. The entire tutorial is also written out in the video description, so check your Gradient options against my instructions and make sure they match.
im on photoshop cc 2017 and cannot seem to duplicate the style (inner shadow). NEED HELP WITH THIS!
To duplicate the inner shadow you need to click the + symbol to the right of the inner shadow name on the list of layer styles. Hope this helps.
Pixel Magic My Photoshop doesn't have the plus symbol. I've also tried copying and pasting the style but still didn't work. I'm using Photoshop CC 2017
Here's a pic showing how the layer effects options window should look in Photoshop CC ( imgur.com/a/ngZVF ). If you're not seeing this, or your not seeing the + symbol next to Stroke, Inner Shadow, Color Overlay, Gradient Overlay, and Drop Shadow, then you're either not using CC, or there's a bigger issue with your copy of Photoshop.
Hope this helps.
Bro at 15:20 you talk about gradient txt overlay than your video suddenly switch to drop shadow its very confusing because there u somehow inserted to have white outline around your txt (where its missing that u changed color from black to white and clicked on another option)
P.S. ive seen down in comments ppl dont have + near their "drop shadow" option for this you can use outer glow i wont make it the same but it will help them to get closer to your instruction.
Anyway great work ive learned something new with drop shadows and gradient stroke ^^
MarshalOne,
This was the first video I ever recorded and I made a couple of editing mistakes that unfortunately made it into the final video. I also accidentally lost the original recording by not saving it because I was using free software at the time that I didn't fully understand. That's why I decided to include the written instructions in the descriptions of my early videos. I've since purchased "real" screen capture software and now edit in Premiere Pro, so I hope you've seen a continual improvement in the quality of my videos since this one was uploaded.
Thanks for watching!
video is still awesome, ive learned something new, just that little thing at the end was confusing because it was like "insta start something else" but for me its ok I found how its working :D

Best photoshop tutorial. Enjoying it. But I am having a issue. I am using CS6. When i creating the text, i create a new layer. Then i press T and start typing, a window pops up and says "something prevented the text engine from being initialize". I tried with different font. But same problem. Please help.
That sounds like a Photoshop CS6 issue. I've never run into it, but there's a video here (ua-cam.com/video/CY1RVJV5c88/v-deo.html) that details a possible fix. Hope this helps!
Thank you so much. It worked. Cheers.
How can I select multiple layers in layer layout to make a single group using photoshop 7.0 ?
Control+Left Click (Command+Click on a Mac) on each layer you want grouped and then click the folder icon on the bottom of the Layers Palette. Alternatively, you can create the Folder first and then click+drag each layer into the new folder.
THANKS ALOT! :)
Done!
I am using Photoshop CC v14 and i don't have the + near inner shadow or drop shadow so how do i create this effect?
The effect I'm teaching here only works in CC 2015 or later because you need to be able to add additional instances of some effects, which can't be done in earlier versions of Photoshop. The only method I'm aware of that would work with your version would be to duplicate the text layer, make the top-most duplicate layer's fill opacity equal 0%, and then apply some of the effects to that layer. There are also some other tutorials on UA-cam that show you how to achieve a similar effect in older versions of Photoshop. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
I will look into that thanks for the info.
Same issue here. What a pain. But this tutorial is on point!
are you gonna keep uploading?if yes i will subscribe to you.
Thanks for watching. I upload a new tutorial every Tuesday.
