The Whites are tough and they do take some extra time, effort and judgments/decisions. I've done many of the trails and have been there when people have died. Once got caught in a horrific thunderstorm between Mt. Washington and Mt. Adams, at a place called, quite appropriately, 'Thunderstorm Junction.' The beauty, on the other hand, is unmatched - once heard someone charactorize the Whites as 'exquisitely dangerous.' Good video - thanks. Be well, stay safe. 🥾
Wow, what an amazing video packed with information, commentary, insights, options, music, and incredible pic/video to help share the info. I'll admit, it sounds quite daunting so your encouragement at the end is appreciated. And at least I've done the Presidentials a few times already. Phew! Thank you for the effort you put in to create this video. I think it's one of your best! (And I've watched many of yours. 😉)
Born and raised in the 603. I high recommend looking at the higher summits forecast when you are able to, in order to get an idea of what the weather will be like in the higher elevation. The Mount Washington observatory posts this on their website.
Great advice Maddie. The thing about thru hiking the AT NOBO is you can wing it almost entirely…it’s very forgiving that way…UNTIL THE WHITES! A little planning, taking weather into account and especially mapping out a strategy from Franconia notch thru the Presidential traverse can literally be a life saver. My hike from Lake of the Clouds to Pinkham Notch was my toughest but most rewarding and beautiful day on the entire AT!!
Great informative video Maddie! I thruhiked the AT in 2022 nobo. For me the hardest mountains in the Whites were Kinsman mountain and the Wildcats. Mount Moosilauke descend and Mount Madison descent were so steep and scary. I went super slow and made it down both. I did end up with bloody knees and shins on both decents.
Ranger great vlog, full of very useful and carrying information. The Whites look tough really challenging and falls and tripping look more liking and rocks are not soft to land on or slide down without injury. The AMC Hunts look beautiful and you advice on how to interact is a good thing to keep in mind. ❤😊
It really bothered me when I had less-than-great experiences even when I was trying to be extra polite. It didn’t click until I met someone in a town in Maine that worked at a hut years before that it wasn’t me, it was just the circumstances
Your AT trek was pretty intense. That little tent of yours belongs in an AT museum! lol Omgoodness, that little guy powered through it all just like you did. ❤
This is super informative- it’s helpful to learn exactly how one decides to stay in a hut or a campsite. I’m a section hiker currently….but maybe someday 😊 Thanks for sharing!!
Really good video, Ranger. Hikers will find this helpful when they approach the area, no doubt. My advice: Just don't be a bull in a china shop, y'all. Be well and be safe. Jack NYC
Good info here. I live near Moosilauke (which you kinda butchered the pronunciation LOL), and hike in the Whites with my dog. For any AT thru hikers hiking with a dog, they absolutely need boots for their dog for some of the Whites. Rocks will tear up the pads of their paws in a matter of hours. Musher booties are lightweight, and you can get them in various canvas weights. I use the lightest, so my dog still has that tactile sense while navigating the rocks. Have a couple sets on hand, along with vet wrap in case you need it. An emergency carry harness is also highly recommended.
Wait, what? I could have sworn my New Hamshirian friends I hiked with called it moose-sill-aw-kee too. But now I wonder if we never talked about it 😳 Thanks for the info for doggie hikers!
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces Meh, who knows, really? LOL. Everyone I know here in NH says moo-seh-lock. But rarely does anyone pronounce Kancamagus correct! They all tend to say Kang-ga-mang-gus, which I don't even know how they get that from the spelling. My parents, now long gone, mentioned several times when I was growing up about the 'new',, incorrect pronunciation of 'The Kanc'. In the end, I guess as long as people know what you are talking about, it doesn't really matter. 😀
While both areas are challenging, thousands of hikers get through them every year! If you haven’t already considered it, you may want to think about hiking SOBO so you encounter the more challenging sections when your body is the least worn down. But either way, you got this!
I got to do it last year. I got a membership with the AMC. Stayed at two of the huts with full service. Not bad. Yet...! Most of the people staying at the huts are NOT Thru-hikers or even LASH hikers. They mess with the staff BIG TIME. I never asked 4 work for stay, that should be for people who have real need of it. When I arrived at the Madison hut, a pm storm was coming in with the sun going down quick. I offered them 100 bones CASH to sleep on the floor with the work for stay twins. NO DEALS. And no camping on the grass outside either. I had to walk all the way down a blue blaze to get the last damn spot you could fit a tent on. They should have just took my money. Don't they need money? So I think that the system governing the huts SUCKS. Not the people working there. They also have quick group seminars on things like mushrooms, and lichens which I loved. So if ya want to stay at one of the huts, BOOK at least 2 days in advance or your gonna be SOL. The whites are full of tourists who really don't know any better. A guy DIED on Mt. Washington just 2 days before I went over the summit from exposure. Nice meeting you at trail daze last year. I was camped out by 'The End' sign in a white teepee under the large blue tarp with 'The usual suspects'
I remember The End! Trails Days was great. But yeah, I had a hard time with Madison Hut, too. I really wish they would add a tent site there (not down the hill!) or something for us the can’t bust out long miles!

I finished the AT and the Whites in 24. Your description is spot on. It was the most difficult part of the trail, but also the most fun!
You really have a great talent for editing and storytelling Maddie. 😊 Your content never disappoints. 👏
Awww yay! Thanks so much!

Though very difficult, the White Mountains were definitely my favorite section of the Appalachian Trail!!! So rewarding!!!❤

Yep, gotta check that weather!

The fact that being hyperfocused is part of your DNA makes these videos really good 👍 👌
Yay! Glad they're helpful!
following your AT hike, I have to agree the whites seemed to the most difficult, good advice in this video

Thank you! The geek side of me LOVED making this!
Thanks…lots of helpful info here! 🙏🙂
Agree !!! Always wanted to do it.
Thanks so much!! I loved pouring all the info into one place!
Great video and your words about how to interact kindly with people working in customer service roles are so true.

Good to see you again!!
Love to see this all over ❤️
It was an epic two and a half weeks!
Your AT trek was pretty intense. That little tent of yours belongs in an AT museum! lol Omgoodness, that little guy powered through it all just like you did. ❤
It sure did! I love that thing!
Thank you Maddie for sharing' I hope you Smoke are doing Great.

Lol! I love it! Thanks, Jack!
Im proud of you maddie❤
Thank you!! That means a lot!
Great video! Can you maybe do a video on how you used Far Out? Not alot out there for us 2025 thru hikers.
Sure, that’s a great idea!
@BeerinBeautifulPlaces Yeah! Maybe basic features and how you would plan out the next few days out on trail? THANKS!

Muchas muchas rocas
Sí 😑
The Whites are the part I'm worried about the most, and I'm not planning to hike until 2026 or even 2027...that and the Mahoosuc Notch
