Hare Krishna devotees have opened a 6 (m) million U-S dollar Hare Krishna complex on Sunday which features a temple and life-size robots that act out scenes from ancient Hindu scripture.
The opening of the temple was attended by the newly appointed Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Housed in this new multimillion dollar complex is the latest incarnation of Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement.
Prabhupada was an Indian who believed it was his destiny to spread the teachings of the Hindu god Krishna, and so founded the Hare Krishna movement in New York in the mid-1960s.
Today, the movement claims a worldwide membership of more than 3 million.
Krishna devotees incorporate the principles of compassion, truthfulness, cleanliness and austerity into their daily lives, upholding them by avoiding meat, tobacco, caffeine, illicit sex and gambling.
In this new temple in New Delhi, Prabhupada tells the story of the beginning of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
People from all religions came along to the temple and the cultural centre's grand opening.
But the ceremony was dominated by delighted Hare Krishna devotees.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This Temple? The temple means everything. It's beautiful, it's just wonderful. It's out of my imagination, I cannot put it into words. It's beautiful."
    SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Krishna devotee
Everyone was impressed with the temple.
    SOUNDBITE: (Hindi)
"In this day and age people are running away from religion. That's why we come here and pray. I've been living here for 20 years."

The new Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee presided at the grand opening.
He said the message of Bhagvad Gita, an ancient text dealing with the purpose of life and providing comprehensive answers to human problems, should be spread globally.
Impressive special effects and robots from Disneyland and Hollywood have helped to bring the story to life.
The new complex has been funded by Indian donors and was set up by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and the London-based Hinduja Foundation.

Not entirely sure how I feel about the animatronic Prabhupada.

      It seems ridiculous to me.

Yes, me too. Even though I have nothing but complete admiration for Srila Prabhupada, I think making an animatronic Prabhupada makes the temple into more of a theme park. Our devotees should worship Krishna and not Prabhupada.

Absolutely. It makes his teachings seem cheap and soulless. A robot cannot convey the love of that man.

      Haribol, well said.
