i suppose that the Kubernetes cluster handles only signalling traffic. what about the user plane? does it make sense to have virtual machines in the user plane entities? thanks
Actually, by 3gpp standards, 5g cores (and RANs, of course) should be cloud native. What this looks like in Tier 1 Service Providers is that the routers to get into any PoP are physical. Servers and disk are there. It's all k8s, though.. typically connected by vRouters - NOT vSwitches, as vSwitches cannot scale to a fraction of what a 5g infrastructure needs to scale. There are some functions in 5g that allow for VMs, but it's very much piecemeal and each SP seems to have stringent exception processes for them. If your project is 5g in nature, the F5 Distributed Cloud is exceptionally well suited for this task, as it's kubernetes based protection and F5's vRouter.
