    This has been a major struggle for me. Whenever I try to sleep on my side or back I feel my brain being hyperactive because I need the pressure on my stomach and face to make me feel calmed down and winded down enough to sleep, and when I'm on my back I just stare at the ceiling for hours and I jump up whenever I start to dose off, it's a curse

    I've slept on my stomach my whole life and being on my back makes it nearly impossible to sleep because I'm not at all comfortable. It's just weird. But also, I know I need to stop. I've had shoulder pains and and I have constant lower back pain and neck pain and sometimes even chest pains. I'm 20 years old, 6'1, 230lbs and roughly 17% body fat. So that's a lot of weight that is on my spine and chest when I sleep. It's just really hard. I need help. I don't want to get old and sore and brittle.

For me it’s constant headaches that don’t seem to go away but there’s a whole list of symptoms that don’t always seem to correlate to stomach sleeping at first.

I.e instead of starting off with sleeping on my back, I would start off with sleeping on my stomach and then before getting sleepyheaded, I would get tired enough of that and then switch to sleeping on my back. 8 times out of 10, I find myself sleeping on my back when I wake up. Here's the weird thing - I actually used to sleep on my back as a kid! Then over time for some reason my sleeping posture got worse and worse. I changed to my side as a teen, then I could only sleep on my right side as an adult - and now I'm starting to sleep on my stomach (but not with my arms above my head - they're straight down like a torpedo, lol). It's super weird. I just ordered a memory foam pillow, hopefully having the right neck support will make the change easier (I'm a ridiculously light sleeper so none of my attempts have worked so far).
    Rambling aside, I'm pleasantly surprised about the weight on your stomach thing being universal.

    • @serg3y
      @serg3y 3 роки тому +1

      Same story. Started on back, now torpedo man :). I also put a pillow under my left shoulder to reduce twist pressure on neck. Always left
      Probably not good long term for neck...
      Back no good because of snoring.
      Will try side again.. but not likely to succeed.

    I tend to start off on my back and sometimes my side, but end up on my stomach most nights, some nights I'll wake up on my back and I'm still in a lot of pain. I have an rather large chest and my posture is poor because of it. I take sleeping medication as I do not sleep without it due to other disabilities such as ADHD, etc. Not sure what to do at this point. I haven't had a new bed in over 10 years as I end up with hand me downs (I cannot afford it, SSI does not bring in that kind of money). If I wake up in the middle of the night I usually cannot go back to sleep despite being a somewhat heavy sleeper due to medications.

    Can you speak to the bio mechanical reason people sleep on their stomach? I would think a shortened hip flexor area and abdomen are reasons people CANT sleep on their back, because they legs want to curl and the hips feel uncomfortable for the abdomen. These tricks are cute, but the momentum towards sleeping on the stomach is much larger than annoying mental cues - might work but still not the root cause

    • @nymphecho777
      @nymphecho777 7 місяців тому

      I know I’m 3 years late so I hope you see this. I think it’s a combination of things. When I sleep on my stomach, I love the pressure. Almost feels like a big warm hug. It can be a sensory thing too - might be related to sensory processing disorder if you’re on the spectrum. Can also be daily active imbalance posture which leads to myofascial pain syndrome. I noticed I have postural dysfunction, areas of muscle groups are strong and others are weak. Maybe if the daily active posture is addressed and get the muscle groups balanced it will help correct the sleep position too. To my understanding, you have to train yourself to fix your posture and it can take a few months.
      Another thing is probably a good morning and evening stretching + massaging routine is a good way to alleviate the stress/pain/tension. Understand which muscle groups are overworked/stressed and take time to massage it.
      What I find a bit surprising is this video didn’t mention anything about mattresses. How is a person supposed to address their sleep position when the mattress isn’t correct for the transition? Also what about pillow types? No mention of that either.
      I know he mentions sleeping on the back, I would prefer to sleep on my sides but unfortunately can’t sleep on my sides without arms going completely numb from the blood circulation cut off.
      Maybe a slight elevation to the upper body with one of those adjustable mattresses is better than being completely flat? Or maybe using those wedge pillows can help with sleep posture transition? I’ve thought about trying this, maybe worth investing.
      The marble technique he mentioned is so goofy. Tape? How is that supposed to stay put without coming off? On a personal note, I have sensory processing disorder…all this technique will do is amplify my frustration and give me a boost of energy. No thanks, I’ll pass.
      I said a lot (apologies if it appears disorganized)
      there’s probably more I can add but I’ll stop here 🙂

      Your current sleeping habits could be affecting these issues, but there may be other factors that are contributing as welll. One way to find out is to try sleeping on your back or side (albeit it'll be difficult switching to a new sleeping habit)

    I just can’t seem to sleep in any other position. I lost days of sleep in 2021 making a serious effort adapting into other positions. It’s been extremely hard and I’ve had zero success.
    I’m hoping some of these tips will help future attempts, although I’m pretty confident I’d just throw that marble across the room pretty early on. Haha

      Sleeping position, just like many other things, is a habit. It's really tough to break habits. Try really small transitions that you may not notice right away. It may take awhile but slowly getting your body used to something new can trick your mind into thinking things aren't really changing.

    I tried transitioning onto my back as it was causing me chronic pain. unfortunately the trick advised by my physio at the time (put a tennis ball into a pair of tights and tie it round me so the ball and the knot are at the front) left me with bruises but I still woke up on my front. I'm going to try the "build a pillow fort around me so I can't move around as much" technique.
    if anyone has any other tips or ideas I'd love to hear them, the way I sleep with one arm angled under my head has caused wear to my shoulder which has just been corrected by an operation, something I'd like to avoid in the future on the other side 😊😊

    Ha ha - I love that marble method (coming from someone who's a very deep sleeper) - thanks! I should try that. I would also like to sleep with my head elevated because of my nose getting stuffy about half-way through the night (I'll have to search your videos to see if you have one about that). Back sleeping is good for anti-aging to boot. ;)

      Sleeping posture is a habit. Often, people who like sleeping on their stomach like having weight on their chest. It's best to start slow and try transitioning to your side first. Then slowly start transitioning to your back. You can try hugging a pillow or a weighted blanket to achieve a similar feeling to being on your stomach!

    I can't stop sleeping on my stomach. It's so comfy! I wanted to ask, how do people sleep in one position the whole night? When I sleep, I change positions frequently. But the best for me is stomach. And when I sleep in other positions, I don't end up sleeping the whole night or something because for me to sleep I need comfort. Help?

    • @RehabRevive
      @RehabRevive  9 років тому +4

      +Rochelle Baboolal Hi Rochelle! Twisting and turning in your sleep is a very common issue that almost all patients experience. Sleeping is a habit that, like any other habit, can be trained through practice and consistency. All you have to do is keep setting your pillows up each night. Probably sleeping on your side is best, and you can always add more pillows for more comfort. I must stress the importance of sleeping in a neutral position. You may not have pain from sleeping on your stomach now, but you will if you continue bad postural habits.

      +Rehab and Revive...I suffered for about 2 weeks,restless nights. Finally now I'm able to sleep on my back, not in one position though. I use a pillow between by legs and it helps a lot. Now I don't have to worry about face wrinkles :-)
