Messi is alot more consistent and accurate than Ronaldo was. Whenever he is in shooting range, Messi is deadly, whereas Ronaldo during his prime would miss alot of his shoots. However, I believe Messi's weakness is that he can go very, very quiet when up against a strong defense in important matches, and I also think Messi would struggle outside of Barcelona (when e.g. Iniesta or Xavi often carry the fight for Barca). For example, Messi has been consistently disappointing for Argentina. Even in World Cup 2014 it was Mascherano leading the Argentina side, not Messi (Messi did nothing other than pop up with a goal). Ronaldo at Barca and Inter was quicker than Messi, had alot more flair and trickery, could turn and power past defenders better than Messi, and he performed as a shining star at ALL levels. He turned what was an average France side into a dominant force. Whenever Zidane was on the pitch and playing well, he was always the best player on the pitch. Ronaldo, Figo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, whoever, put anyone on the same pitch and Zidane outshone them because he did the basic playmaking better than anyone could. Even at 34 years old and nearing retirement, Zidane in World Cup 2006 was better than Messi has ever been in a World Cup.
