I boot up the game. I'm very excited to play something I've been putting off for several months. I don't know a thing about this game, other than this main character. So, I launch it. I'm greeted with a small window with a really good pixel art of the main character an THIS starts playing. THIS AMBIENT MASTERPIECE IS PERFECT. IT IS JUST A PERFECT AMBIENT TRACK.
When I hear it for the first time. I say: "Wow. I'm really gonna like this game. The music is just lovely." The melancholy, a sense of mystery... The synthwaves, the reverb, the subtle melody in the background... It's all PERFECT, and perfectly encapsulates this game. The moment I hear this again playing at the top of the tower... Man, the fact they used this beautiful menu track at the very climax of the game... It was like a reset. I cannot describe with words how impactful it was tohear this again at the end. This music is literally... Dreamlike. Like having a beautiful dream. It gives you a sense of nostalgia, of mystery like I said... It's perfect. Absolutely perfect ambient track.

    Good of many, or one?
What do we do, here with the sun?
Lose you, but save this world?
Save my friend, while all comes unfurled?
    ‘Fake’ many, or ‘Real’ one?
How could I choose? I've come undone!
    Leave or dispel this night?
Yes, my burden truly is light,
    Watching the sun’s soft glow,
What do I do? I just don't know!
I'm not God, we’ll all lose!
This, I don't want to have to choose…
    Shatter this sun’s warm glow?
Put it in? Save the world below?
How could I know what's right?
Here and now, with my burden’s light…
    Niko: I'm confused, and scared,
    But I, know that,
You can make the right choice.
    I trust, you…

My computer has my name as Luna, even though that’s not my real name. When Niko called me Luna, it just felt appropriate. A world trapped in eternal night having a god named after the moon. It just felt right, so I didn’t correct Niko. I’m glad I didn’t, because it made the game that much more impactful, knowing that the moon was guiding them.

I rarely make user accounts and almost never comment on anything, but I made an account just because this comment and one other resonated THAT strongly. When I got to Prophetbot and he called me User, I told him that wasn't my name. I thought, since I was meant to be a god helping to bring back the sun, my name should be...Solaris. So, you went through as Luna the moon goddess, and I went through as Solaris the sun god. I dunno, something about your comment just hit me and I had to say this.

    *_THEM SPOILERS, YO._*
After the Solstice ending, the World Machine told me they could reset everything, because they had Niko's memories. They asked me if that's what I really wanted.
To be honest...at that moment I didn't even know what I wanted.
Or, at least, the few things I _did_ want completely conflicted each other.
I just wanted Niko to be happy. But I had no idea if he/she truly was happy, because he/she was gone. I had no idea what he/she was going through back in his/her home world.
I wanted to see Niko again, but at the same time...I didn't want to pull him/her away from his/her family again...I couldn't bring myself to make Niko go through that again.
No person I've met, video game or real life, has ever had quite the innocent, kind, and genuinely lovable personality that Niko had.
Because of that, I never wanted to say goodbye to Niko...
This game, and practically Niko him/herself, have made me feel these powerful, indescribable feelings. I don't think there will ever be a game that provides emotional elements quite like OneShot's. At least not in the near future.

It really speaks volumes about this game that I beat it *six years ago,* and only now am I attempting to write comments on its OST. The emotions it left me with were so raw, so *real,* that I didn't dare approach this OST for the longest time.
Well, I think enough time has passed. And maybe I'm taking myself too seriously - these are just UA-cam comments, after all.
But I think the time has come for me to show the world my love for this game, and to share just how special my experience with it was.

A voiceless hero won't think twice giving his life to the world (most RPG)

Truely a rare gem to figure players qualities.

to this day I remember my choice on what to do at the tower.
I think I did the right thing.
I know the world isn't worth saving but to let innocent people die is just completely selfish. it's almost saying the point of the adventure meant nothing. even though I said to save the world it's bound to die eventually just much more slowly.
people can argue with my choice and my back up to it but it's my opinion.

    • @ket2ZEchoppah
      @ket2ZEchoppah 7 років тому +11

To me the whole adventure was for Niko's sake. With the right reasons in mind, there's really no wrong answer. For you, the journey was about saving the world, spending one life to save thousands, and so you did. For me, the journey was about both, but as everyone knows, one has to go dudnit? But I felt too emotionally attached to Niko, it took him a while to realize it, but while he saw me as his mentor, I saw him as my friend. And once he saw me as his friend too, I felt like the best thing to do was to send him home.
It felt like everything but a selfish thing. Homies help homies no matter what the cost.
Your opinion is still yours though, I just thought it would be fun to share mine. ^_^

    • @danielisenberg2360
      @danielisenberg2360 7 років тому +13

This is really a unique situation in a game where you have to make a choice like this. At least for me it was. I spent a loooong time sitting there, watching Niko's eyes move left and right, listening to this song, just thinking. Thinking about the choice I was being forced to make and everything else. I remember when I first realized what the options were. My reaction was pure anguish. I actually audibly said something along the lines of "no. no no nononononono NO! You cant DO this to me!" but I sat there and thought. And I realized that there is no right answer. When asked to save either 1 person you love or 10 who you have never met, you can't possibly make that choice. Both answers are wrong.
But that's not why this was a unique experience for me. This was unique for me because, at the end, when I finally made my choice, I felt like I did the right thing. I was at peace with it. And faced with the same decision, I would have done the same thing with no more regret than the first time.
That's what I have noticed that is so unique about this situation. You would expect everyone to be agonizing over it after it is done, because there is no right choice. But for the most part, that is not what I have seen. I have seen people at peace with their choice, people who found a sense of closure, even acceptance.
It is something Undertale, for example, never gave me. I could never be at peace with Asriels fate, even though I feel that I have accepted it. That is what makes this game so different.

      +Daniel Isenberg
I saw the choice coming from the very beginning of the game. I realized there might be a choice to save either Niko or the world at the end.
It was there that I made my choice. In the broken house. Before even entering the world proper. I knew who I would save if given the choice.
I knew Niko had absolute priority. I knew I _had_ to save Niko over everyone else. And when I reached the summit of the tower, I only hesitated for a second or two.
_I shattered the sun without doubt or regret._
And I agree about Undertale. One of the things I hate about that game, is that it's just not possible to save Asriel, no matter what you do. He is doomed and there is _nothing_ we can do about it.
Don't get me wrong. I love Undertale. I was even happy at the end. But that one thing always nags on me. Why isn't there a way to save him? Why are there no choices about who to save? I can choose to kill or not to kill, but I can't _save_ anyone. Why? It's stupid. Why can't I, for example, give my SOUL to Asriel, so his body can be stable and we can share it? It's such an obvious idea. Such an obvious solution.
      _Let me choose, dammit!_

It's the type of song that you'd hear as you look up to the stars right beside your friends and ask a million questions about life.
It's the type of song that you'd hear as you look down upon an abandoned city from the rooftop of a building.
It's the type of song that you'd hear as you say your last goodbyes to a good friend of yours after graduation, at night.
It's the type of song that you'd hear as you walk the stairway to heaven, looking down on your corpse, wondering if your family is gonna be okay once you leave this Earth.
It's the type of song that you'd hear if you ever got to space and looked back at Earth, and wondered about how small you truly are compared to everything else in the vast universe.
That's how it makes me feel.

I just discovered this game 3 nights ago, I watched an old Playlist of Mark playing it, and honestly, I think I might just buy it, I felt the connection between Mark and the game, and with myself somehow? like I don't know why and its really not healthy to say this but... I really wanna get the game just so I know niko can say my name.. thats all I want at this point.. nothing else from it... its hard to describe, but games like these only come and go in a lifetime, im sure everyone that gave it chance at the time got pretty lucky in terms of being their when it was relevant.. I wasn't... of course being that one kid in the 6th grade back in 2016 that didn't take much interest in things.. i feel bad becuase like I said in another commen and i quote: "i feel stupid! inside for remembering things from the past that i never took into consideration.." and so being 16 as of current it lingers now.. thanks to this game.. The whole way through my journey with Niko, all I was ever told was that as the Messiah, it was Niko's duty to replace the sun and save them all.
And that my duty as their God was to serve as the Messiah's guide through a shattered world to ensure their mission would be fulfilled.
I forgot the message I was given at the beginning. "Your "mission" is to help Niko return home." I believed them to be one and the same. I was wrong.
I was given a choice. A choice no one should need to bear. Save an entire world of people I'd come to cherish, at the cost of Niko's freedom, and more likely their life. Or shatter their final hope to shards to set free the only person in that world I knew for a fact was real.
A world died that day by my hand. And many would tell me I am wrong in the choice I made.
Even a God can be selfish.

In a way, the biblical references are fitting. An innocent, doomed to die for the mistakes of the world.
I guess that's why the track that plays during the final choice is "My Burden Is Light", huh?
    ...It couldn't be any heavier.

Niko doesn't ask you "what do you want me to do?", Niko asks "what's the right thing to to?". It makes you think about if your decision is the right thing to do, not just what you want.

I love how many different meanings this title has.
    My burden is light.
The player's burden is light, all they must do is guide Niko.
Niko's burden is light. Both physically in terms of weight and in what it is, a lightbulb.
But the bulb is anything but a "light" object. Its purpose is immensely important, as without it this world will die.
Apparently "my burden is light" is also a Biblical quote, representing Niko's role as the messiah and the player's as god.

you know what I'm glad this game didn't get popular, because if it did when it got released then I know for a fact I would watch a playthrough and not have probably the best experiences in a game I ever had. It's unfortunate that it didn't get the popularity it deserved but I'm not too mad and I played the game completely blind, best game ever change my mind. And also I want to thank the creator of get a snack at 4 am on roblox for introducing me to one of the best games I ever played (Some of the music in the game were from OneShot, that's how I found out about OneShot in the first place).

currently playing solstice. i’ll update this comment when i’m done. but when i first heard this song, i knew this game would be special. my first gameplay *spoilers*
    .
    .
i put the sun into the tower. i loved nico but after meeting everyone and seeing their life i needed to put the sun back. i then started the game over to do the solstice run. except i messed up the run. i didn’t know how (didn’t realise you had to open the book in the mines) so i played the game over a second time. except the second time i broke the sun and let nico go home. oh my god that was so sad. i couldn’t play the game for a week or so. i just sat and thought about the game.
then a week or so later i reopened the game and tried the solstice run. i then asked steam without spoilers how to start the solstice run. they told me to look closely at the clovers on the ground. i then started the solstice run. so far i got to the part where the airplane was taken over by the squares and we left the two bird kids in the cemetery with their mom. ugh

i came to this game knowing fully well that i would have to choose between niko and the world... i thought it would help with choosing. i was going to choose to save the world. i knew that.
but once i reached this room... i no longer knew what to do. i ended up choosing the world, but as soon i made the choice i felt regret.
Had i just killed my companion?
i knew what i had to do.
i reloaded the game, and played again. this time, i would make the third choice.
i was going to save both this world... and Niko.

Tis so beautiful. I remember hearing this when I booted up the game and just sat there mesmerized for 7 minutes listening. You know you are in for a good game when you can't even get past the title screen.
Thankfully the game lives up to that promise ;)
