This is my first time learning the terms “left” and “right” branching languages. I actually didn’t notice until now how English modifiers often branch to the right, so the way you contrasted the English and Chinese structures really helps. Thanks as always.🙂
No problem! 😉 Thank you for being supportive as always!
@@GraceMandarinChinese Yes! That was really helpful.
I've been learning Mandarin for about 3 years, almost four, and this video helped me! Chinese grammar was never explained to me in this way, so now, a lot of things make more sense to me now. Before, I was used to knowing what was right and wrong, but this video helped me be able to vocalize the reasons why! 谢谢 💕
If you found today’s lesson helpful, don’t forget to share it with your friends who are also learning Chinese! 😉
Also, let me know what your struggles are when learning Chinese (can be in any aspect, like listening, speaking, reading etc.) in the comments, I might do a future video about it!
非常好!😁😁😁❣🤜🤛
Would you please make a “Comprehensive” video on frequently used dialogues on C-Dramas? Is there any difference in the dialogues in Historical/ Wuxia and Modern dramas? It’ll be more easy to learn the daily uses sentences and more fun and enjoyable to watch those dramas. Also, we can focus on what the actors are saying rather than focusing on subtitles.

word-order, i.e. sentence structure, is THE struggle!
@Dreadnought 1997 If I were a Chinese then I could’ve learned from my Mother. Why would I be here to learn?
I find it difficult in identifying the characters when reading but I'm improving in the listening but I want to be better in conversation.

This really clarified a lot about complex sentences. The left-branching for relative clauses explains SO MUCH !

@@lunaleon3126 It’s not that we watch Chinese drama only to learn Chinese language or vice versa. It’s more relatable field for entertainment and also for learning. 😊
Please make structured lessons that we could purchase, I love your approach!
I noticed that Chinese grammar is almost the same as Korean grammar, except the SVO form.
The noun modifiers are also placed before the noun in korean as well.
In korean, you add ㄴ/은, which works like 的 in most cases.

Hi, Grace! I've just found your channel and I think it's very helpful! I especially like the Chinese script part which contains both traditional and simplified! I'm learning Simplified Chinese but I'm also interested in the Traditional. Do you know any books which have both types of Trad.& Simplified? Thank you!
Not going to lie, using (what I assume you have studied) actual models for the language, such as left branching, is very helpful!
I love your videos, i love mandarin
谢谢 爱你
BRO YOURE AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGG XIEXIEEEE
Hi Grace! My native language is Turkish and is also a left side language. For example; eve gelen(who came home) çocuk (kid) = Kid who came home. I was always trying to use English word order when I try to practice my Chinese because i heard that they are both SVO, so close; but thank you, I won't try it anymore.👍🏻 Day by day, I see that Chinese is not only similar to English but also Turkish. It is close to agglilative languages around of it. We also add "mı, mi, mu, mü" to ask yes and no questions in Turkish. For example; "İyi mi?" means "Is s/he/it good?", and in Chinese it is 好吗?(hǎo ma?). We also have common words like yen- in Turkish, (means to win, from Ottoman Turkish yeng-, Old Turkic yeng-), 赢 (yíng)in Chinese (means to win), etc. I didn't know we have that much common. That makes me more enthusiastic to learn Chinese. Even though Chinese is not a agglilative language, it doesn't have irregular verbs as in any agglilative language. It is just like an agglilative language. For example we add -dı/di/du/dü to end of the verbs to create past tense, and you do the same thing with 了(le). Same for the other tenses. No irregularity, no plural suffix after plural objects (as in two pencils), no gender... I'm lucky than the other guys here who speak only English. Because i think Chinese grammatically is between Turkic and English. If there was Latin alphabet and no tones, it would be a piece of cake for me❣️✌🏻
Thank you so much! I was finding basic chinese grammer lessons. Your lessons are so helpful.
Hello friend 😊
I am also new beginner for Chinese language learning
I understand you more Grace
The dependent or attributive clause can precede (left-branches) the modified word in formal German and did so in Classical Attic Greek, so this was not unheard-of in Europe.

Very interesting & useful.
But question- slithers say that Chinese is topic &’beginning of sentence if when speaker wants to emphasize some words ???
Do you have any video explaining the difference between 发,寄,送?
好可爱的小姐姐,过来学英文了
there are a huge amount of pen strokes in a chinese character sentence. Is there a version of chinese shorthand for the characters that can be used to make notes in meetings?
the left branching concept is helpful but how do prepositions fit into this 比如... 桌子上,
Thanks for the term left-branching. I've heard it said that Chinese is a topic-comment language. First the topic, then comments thereon. While Chinese sentences can be force-fit into STPMVO, a possibly awkward but grammatically correct word-order proceding as Grace teaches here is better.
But here is the thing , no one cares about the grammar mistake in China cuz sometimes we would even make those just for fun and turn them into a sort of ‘online language’
hi grace, i am learning chinese and I learned Russian before. you might find it interesting to know that in the present tense, in russian the verb to be is ellipsed, nearly as in chinese. no need to add a degree but a bit similar. the lamp is blue, becomes lamp blue(lampa sinaya) or I am grace becomes I grace ( ya grace) . my theory is that in most languages the most common words tend to evolve quicker and follow different rules> the verb to be is mosty irregular in many languages
Cool! Thank you for sharing!
Yes, high frequency verbs tend to be irregular much more often than low frequency verbs (to be, to go, to do, to have, to think... those are all irregular both in English and Spanish, and likely a lot of other languages). That might be due to them changing faster. It might also happen than less frequent verbs tend to stabilize in regular patterns because, being used less, it's harder to learn all different forms for them. It's probably a combination of both things.
I will start to study in Taiwan in the next few months. So I want to learn Mandarin to communicate better with the locals. I think I will start from pronunciation. After that what should I do?
I LOVE UUU💗💗💗💗

謝謝老師,我很喜歡這個視頻。請問,你可以教我們如何造描述日期、地方的句嗎?比如:何时會跟日期用“于”、“在”,如何描述地理位置和抽象地點,如何包括两者(如On 3 September 2011, he gave a speech at a conference in Taipei),等等。希望我説得通。我只想知道如何在一個句子中包含更多細節!
Some reasonable sentences would be like:
a.2011年9月3日,他在台北的一場會議上演講。
b.在2011年9月3日,他在台北的一場會議上演講。
c.他在2011年9月3日在台北的一場會議上演講。
d.他于2011年9月3日在台北的一場會議上演講。
(1) we use "year-month-day" format in chinese, so "3 September 2011" would be "2011年9月3日".
(2)"於(于)" is actually quite similar to "在" when we try to specify the time and/or location in a sentence. "In Taipei" can be translated into "在台北", "于台北", and "On 3 September 2011" can also be "在2011年9月3日", "于2011年9月3日". However, we usually use "于" under formal conditions or documents.
(3) For native speakers, we usually don't put "于" at the beginning of a sentence, although we can understand it. "在", however, can be used in the beginning of a sentence.
(4) We sometimes drop "在(于)" when addressing the time. For example, he went to Taipei last Saturday. 他在上星期六去台北 = 他上星期六去台北(BOTH CORRECT). However, when addressing the location, "在(于)" cannot be dropped. For example, he ate an apple in the classroom. 他在教室裡吃蘋果(CORRECT) 他教室裡吃蘋果(WRONG)
(5) When time and location are both addressed in one sentence, ALWAYS put the time before the location in chinese. For example: he went to Taipei last Saturday 他在上星期六去台北(CORRECT!!) 他去台北在上星期六(WRONG!!)
(6) When multiple locations are addressed in one sentence, ALWAYS address the larger/bigger/upper concept then the smaller/lower one. This is quite different from english. For example, the Presidential Office is located at No.122, Sec. 1, Chongqing S. Road, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City. 總統府位在台北市中正區重慶南路一段122號 = 總統府位於台北市中正區重慶南路一段122號.
(7)"...a conference in Taipei" should be "在台北(bigger concept)的一場會議(smaller concept)"
(8) preposition in chinese is sometimes annoying for non-native speakers. at a conference = 在一場會議"上" = 在一場會議"中" = 在一場會議"裡" (all of them are correct); at home = 在家; in the classroom = 在教室"裡"; in a car = 在車子"裡"; in a tree = 在樹"上". but don't worry!! there are still some logical rules regarding the prepositions :DD
(9) in a sentence, you can put the subject before or after the specific time, but can only put the subject before the location. For example, my grandpa fell off in the park last week. 我爺爺(Subject)上禮拜(Time)在公園裡(Location)跌倒(Verb) / 上禮拜(Time)我爺爺(Subject)在公園裡(Location)跌倒(Verb) (both are correct).
However, 上禮拜(Time)在公園裡(Location)我爺爺(Subject)跌倒(Verb)→ we can understand it, but we just don't say it this way.
and, 在公園裡(Location)我爺爺(Subject)上禮拜(Time)跌倒→ see rule (5), address time first then the location; rule (9), Subject before the location
I will give you some more examples of both time and locations addressed in one sentence:
My brother killed 5 cockroaches in his dorm yesterday. 我哥哥昨天在宿舍裡殺了5隻蟑螂 = 昨天我哥哥在宿舍裡殺了5隻蟑螂。
I saw a white unicorn last night in my dream. 我昨晚在夢裡看到一隻白色的獨角獸 = 昨晚我在夢裡看到一隻白色的獨角獸。
On the Moon Festival, People in Taiwan will have BBQ on the road. 台灣人在中秋節會在馬路上烤肉 = 中秋節台灣人會在馬路上烤肉。
On 24 May 2019, same-sex marriage became legal in Taiwan. 2019年5月24日,台灣同性婚姻合法化。
