Thomas's video is perhaps, for me, the best video I've seen concerning nails. I was a 'traditionalist' for many years, but as I got older my nails changed, and the old way just didn't work. So I came across this and thought 'what the hell' I'll give this a go. I've seen this in other teaching methods but ignored it since it wasn't traditional rounded or upward ramp, and just wrote it off as weird since it wasn't commonly used. I wish I would have been aware of this 40 years ago 😁 Tone has never been better!!
Your idea of putting the sandpaper on the strings and playing normally so the nails shape themselves correctly is absolutely genius. I want to smack myself for not thinking of it.
This is the best tip ever. I've always struggled to get a regular tone due to poor nail shape. With this method, I get a round, even sound every time I file my nails. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this video! I found it interesting because it might help a lot of people, or at least makes them think much more about tone production, as it happened to me, so I transcribed and translated it mainly for people that only speak Spanish. The copyright of this video as well as its ideas belong to Thomas Viloteau that speaks as it follows: "Hola a todos. Thanks Thomas! Following your technique with the sandpaper to shape the nails I have found that my angle of attack is different to what I believed for years. I thoroughly recommend this to all students of all levels. :)
I have to thank you for your wonderfull ideea for polishing the nails this way. I am for the common way but that can be applayed when you have all of three nails the same. In my case...well it isn' t , so I tryed this ideea on me..and fits me so good. Thank you one more time.
Finally! I have been trying to figure out why I have that scratchy sound on the bass strings. No matter what shape I used it's always there. I'm going to give this a try when I get home.
Thank you so much. I have never understood nail shape and never enjoyed my tone on my classical. Wanted to blame my instrument and was pretty sure tat wasn't the reason for my poor tone. A genius and elegant solution.
Very innovative ; I will try it. Careful of the sandpaper on the Smallman! Thanks for the great performance and Warmup/ Master class at Syracuse NY. A video of your warmup techniques would be a great benefit. I enjoyed your CD while driving home.
Fantastic idea but it would be good help to specify the grade of the papers you are using. For example the black paper that you place on the guitar strings
I used to do this with sandpaper, but now I use shorter nails and lime rounder with a left straight edge, all depends on the strength of the attack (I play with the left side of my fingers). When I had long nails, used to stuck on the strings and above all, my sound changed for worse when my hands were cold (when he had a concert or exam).
What a clever way to find out the exact spot at which the nail attacks the string. Now, we need to shape the nail so that the spot will be the highest point when we look at it. Am I right? The video doesn’t seem to explain how we should shape our nail according to the point of attack. Can someone help me clarify this ?
This (wrapping 'wet+dry' paper around the strings) was the technique Paco De Lucia used :) fyi - 600 grit 'wet+dry' paper is a good place to start Peace.
Good demo of one way to file the nail, I've seen a couple of people doing it this way now. I like the old fashioned way (carving the nail by line of sight). As a note people could look into the polishing a bit more. I have a 2 stage polishing method, I use 3600 grade micro-fibre cloth you can get it online but its cheapest in a roll on ebay. It is superior to wet and dry sand paper in every way except longevity. The final stage is to use a smooth 2 - 3 stage buffer from a beauty shop to rub and heat up the tip of the nail (rub in one direction) this fuses the nail edge together so the edge lasts longer and sounds smoothest. If you get it right it should feel like playing with glass tipped nails. Thanks for posting.
While you're at the beauty store, if you have thin nails check or ask for one of those products that make a thin, flexible layer on top to protect the nail. They can really help if you don't have strong nails.
Hi Tomas, thanks for your great explanation. I have one question. For the sand paper you are using in the strings to shape the nails, which granularity we should use ?
It seems Tomas may have read but didn't answer a straight forward question . I doubt that this would be because of English text comprehensive skill, just too busy?
Bonjour Thomas ! Pourrais tu me dire ou tu l'as acheté ? Merci pour ta vidéo !
Thomas, I've just started recording myself play, been playing for a long time. I noticed scratchy sounds that come from the right hand which I obviously haven't noticed before, otherwise I would have addressed them. Also, no one ever told me about this. I stumbled this video in search for a solution after many tests prior to this (many shapes, even changing right hand position, which is probably not the solution) - I am now growing my nails longer in order to test what you brought here. So far I wasn't able to fix it and it's very frustrating..
Thomas, I am also curious about the grade and type of sand paper you use to wrap around the strings. It looks like it is not designed for wood sanding, but is there some more info you can provide? Great video!!
I would suggest using a crystal nail file, as emery boards or sandpaper (which should only be used in one direction, if ever) will damage the ends of the nails and can cause them to split. Most women use crystal nail files these days, since one can file in any direction, and the crystal seals the nails rather than splits them. Just a heads up for those who don't know how to correctly file nails.
This is actually pretty clever. Just be careful to slightly round out the beveled edge you've created, or you could find yourself going through a lot more strings. :)
Useful method if you have perfect nails. But nails can be formed completely different, requiring more advanced methods. For this I have developed permanent artificial nails with perfect sound, holding for 3 month, never break and done completely in 5 minutes per nail. I will prepare a paper for clarification 🤓😋🥰
A week and a half? I’ve tried various numbers of things to let them grow fast. But I’ve never had patience. And I thought the ring finger had to be flat.
There really is no nail shapes that do for all people. It depends on your technique and on the shape of your fingers etc. Each finger may have a different nail shape. I would never have nails this long for example. In general i have them very short with maybe a slight ramp on the left. Good idea to get the general shape but it'll need fine tuning.
I think what this video is showing is that the way you play naturally should dictate your nail shape, not the other way round. It quite evidently works.
This is the best video I have seen for shaping nails. Brilliant idea Thomas. Thank you!
Exactly 20 years with my classical guitar. I've never come across this brilliant method! I will definitely try it!!!! Thank you so much for sharing!

Best video for shaping nails for the guitar on the net, awesome!

Thank you Thomas. This is really helpful.
Thank you very much!!
Merci 🤙
Most helpfull instruction on HOW to determine the best shape for each person's style and method of playing.
Finally i found useful video about nails , thanks thomas !

Can someone help me clarify this ?
thank you for your kind.
merci beaucoup, thomas! C'est très informative.
I dont know why but I feal like some member of gang by having my guitar nails :D
What a great tip !.. Thubs up and suscribing right now.
Thanks! 👍
Very useful! Thank you for posting. And thanks for the English subtitles. :-)

Did Ida Presti pluck the strings with the Right side of the nails?
Thanks. Haven't seen this before.
The idea of placing the sandpaper on the strings is excellent. I've tried ti twice and my tone has never been cleaner. Thanks a bunch.
Bonne idée, je vais essayer. Merci.
That was lots of help think you!
This is an ASMR jewel!
très bon tuto merci.
Merci, good topic.
Merci !

Awesome
I've done that for ten years with simple metal nail file. Very tricky method.
Never thought about paper..... Silly me xD

water sand paper, usually between 400-600, between 800 - 1000 to refine, and to polish till 12000
Superbe, merci.

Bonjour Thomas

Honestly, i still hear scratching after he filed his nails. Is it unavoidable to a certain degree?
What guitar do you use?
what grade of sand paper do you use for wrapping around the strings? very helpful video!
I guess it depends how much length you want to remove....Maybe 800 - 1200 grade depending on your nail length? Nice video Thom!
- Michael -
No he uses 500 grade.
Your right hand position is different with segovia / pepe romero tehnique

you hold your guitar like its your baby
its cute..

ridiculous nail shape.
youre joking right?
I think what this video is showing is that the way you play naturally should dictate your nail shape, not the other way round. It quite evidently works.
Well, he got a beautiful tone, so it must be working for him.
Have you heard Viloteau play? He's amazing. His nail shape obviously works for him...
HAhah chubbby fingesr haha
