I highly recommend Bob Dancer & Liam Daily's book, "A Winner's Guide to Jacks or Better" (volume 1 of 6). I just relearned advanced strategy for 9/6, 9/5, 8/6, and 8/5 Jacks or Better. This book not only teaches the strategies, but also explains the principles behind the strategies, which then also helps you to understand more advanced games better as well.
I'm new to video poker, but not to poker, advantage gambling, or profiting from comps. I'd like to try earning some free cruises from Royal Caribbean by playing video poker. I'm now learning to play Jacks or Better and Bonus Poker with mediocre pay tables, but I don't know whether I'll find these games with pay tables as good as mediocre. What games/pay tables will I likely find on RCL cruise ships?
@@americancasinoguidebook I'd rather play a higher denomination game than a 3/5/10 game because I understand that multi-play games would increase variance, which in turn increases my "risk of ruin." However, I also know that the house edge or "return" also has a powerful effect on the "risk of ruin". Do you think a 3/5/10 game with a 7/5 pay table (playing the "3" option) would have a lower risk of ruin than a regular 6/5 Jacks or Better game?
You might want to look into buying Dunbar's Video Poker Risk of Ruin calculator for that information. By the way, I believe the best video poker pay table I ever found on a cruise ship was on NCL. For $2 and up they had 9/6 Double Double Bonus - 98.98% return with perfect play and maximum coins bet. A very volatile game, but a good pay table.
There are three live video poker games I have seen worse than 95%. First is 10/8/5/3/1/1 bonus poker, at 94.18%, this is called "bonus poker" on the screen but pays 10 for full house, 8 for flush, 5 for straight, 3 for trips and one for both two pair and jacks or better. I've seen this on the bar at the D and Circa (the bonus poker deluxe is a more normal 8/6 at 98.49%) as well as in the smoking room at the airport. The airport also has 6/5 double double bonus at 94.66% and 8/5/4 double bonus at 94.19%. Needless to say unless you are desperate you should never play video poker at the airport.
I take that back, I saw a 10/7/5/3/1/1 jacks or better machine on UA-cam with a 400 for straight flush instead of 250 and the normal 125 for four of a kind, at the Reno Airport. 91.10% payback - ouch!
I need to try to find more videos on Jacks or Better, I feel like I watched one Steve did years ago but it was limited.

Probably 6/5 jacks or better. However, they might be 7/5 if you play 3/5/10-play games. I think 6/5 bonus poker is the best game you will find.
