  • This is a comparison of two personal shelter sized, waterproof tarps, the Etowah Outfitters/BCUSA/Bens Bushcraft 10X10 Woodland Camo Tarp and the DD 3X3 Multicam Tarp. These are very similar in price and features, but there are some key differences and I do have a favorite between them.
the Ultra Light Camp Stool I was sitting on under the Etowah Outfitters Tarp is called the Tribe Provisions Camp Stool. amzn.to/2cdPt1J . It gets my highest recommendation for an ultra-light packable camp chair. It's awesome! amzn.to/2cdPt1J
Etowah Outfitters Woodland Camo Tarp www.shop.backpa...

DD 3X3 Multicam on Amazon amzn.to/2AmDidn
DD 3X3 in olive green on Amazon amzn.to/2jBdthp
These tarps are popular among Hammock Campers, Hikers, Bushcrafters, and other Outdoorsmen. I hope you find the information useful if you are looking for a good quality personal shelter sized tarp to take with you on your adventures!

Thank you for your thoroughness Ripstop is fantastic BUT it wont completely.😊 Single stitch I thought meant a single pass of the sewing machine - The BCUSA anchor points I believe look tough, only because I am familiar with how strong nylon webbing is. You'll should never have any issues. What creates the weakness on the BCUSA are the holes created by the needle, there should be reinforcement in the fabric, however I would submit the BCUSA is double stitched. With the detail you go into your reviews are fantastic. Many reviews are just a fraction - Someone will make coffee, call the dog, set a product up tell you they like it.. If you have the time please keep going with reviews. - Thank you

Polyester doesn't absorb ANY water so it's very fast to dry out whereas Nylon absorbs a lot of water, and stretches when it does so it sags when wet, and takes a lot longer to dry out...I would take a Polyester Tarp every time, even if it is heavier.

What??? A Cliff hanger on my much anticipated, Tarp Review??? Oh The injustice of it all! The whole time (well the second half of the video) I was anxiously waiting for the comparison between the Aqua Quest and the DD.
    And I waited...
    And I waited....
    And I waited...
And finally you start talking about them and.... You tell us that you will do a comparison in the future? How tragic!
It was as bad as in the 80's when for a season, Everyone who watched Dallas was asking... "Who Shot J.R."
Ok, so to be honest, I didn't watch dallas and didn't care who shot J.R. but you get the point.
Cliffhangers are fine for TV but not for Tarp Reviews!
    Great Review as always
and as always, I will be eagerly anticipating the next episode in "These Are The Tarps of Our Lives"

+Michael Reed Here's the good news: I have a new camera coming this week. So, the Aqua Quest Defender Camo vs DD 3X3 Multicam should be visually superior to all of my previous videos (I haven't done anything about my audio yet, but the new camerqa should be a big improvement to my cell phone). ... I have to add though, that what I really can't wait to get with a better camera is a saw blade. I'm experiencing some delays and frustration getting fine and ultra fine teeth blades from Japan, so even though I was really hoping to do the silky blades video with a better camera and surprise my viewers, I might end up doing a redundant video to satisfy my own desire to do better showing saw blades. Even though I did a Super Accel vs Bahco, and I did a Super Accel vs 210 Gomboy, I might do a Bahco vs 210 Gomboy even though it's more or less redundant.... But either way, the Aqua Quest vs DD will be coming soon, and likely in less than decent weather but with a better camera ;)

+betweenfiveandseven I am looking for a good video camera, so when you receive the new camera, please let us know how you like it, and a little about the features, ease of use, cost, brand, etc.

+betweenfiveandseven Well The reviews will be much anticipated, whatever the quality of the video. Actually I was wondering about the advantage of the fine tooth (I didn't know about ultra fine). Please include a cost evaluation to help us decide if the cost of single blades is worth it or if buying another entire saw (as a spare or backup with a different tooth configuration) might be the way to go.
I will also look forward to the showdown of the tarps.

You will find DD Tarps are very well made, I have one 4x4 (12ftx12ft) coyoti tarp and I was so impressed that I went and bought the 4x4 multi cam from them, you will not get a better tarp, and if you have any issues with them, they bend over backwards to help you, and that's not because I come from the UK, but they will take a lot of beating from any other company. ( this is just my opinion)

This was a great comparison review. I have the etowah tarp. I like it a lot and believe that being made of nylon is better. I don't want to hear it shaking in the wind. In addition, made in the USA is significant to me. It's obviously not the only thing. I also think that from a durability standpoint it will meet all reasonable needs.
So, even though I disagree with your recommendation, this was still a great review.

We just used my Etowah and my Kelty the other day at an outdoor graduation party. It drizzled rain all afternoon and there were more people than the three rented canopies could cover. We moved the canopies so they were 10 feet apart and then stretched a tarp between each of them. Having those two tarps in my pickup toolbox saved the day making 200 extra square feet of coverage. ... I did notice the center seam weeped just a little bit of water near two of the tie outs (not a lot... just a little bit creating an occasional drop falling on the inside) so sometime in the next few weeks I think I'll do a seam sealing video for the Etowah. It's really easy to seam seal PU coated Nylon, so that should be a short video. ... Anyway, I'm glad you like your Etowah tarp! I like mine too and well enough I keep it in the truck. My DD 3X3 lives in my backpack to carry in the woods, and just recently I added a DD Superlight for a light weight day bag I've been carrying creek fishing and for short hikes. ... Thanks for taking the time to watch! I appreciate it.

Hello what do you think is better between Aquaquest Safari 10x10 and DD 3x3 tarp? One has 3000mm other 20000mm

    • @betweenfiveandseven

I don't have a Safari series AquaQuest for comparison. And as to the waterproof rating, please see the article linked in the video description regarding waterproof materials. Once the amterial is past ~2000 or so, there aren't many circumstances nature can provide that makes a higher rating necessary.

awesome review man! I ordered the dd xl tarp about 6 hours before someone sent me the link to this video. I was so nervous about the choice I made, until I spent 30 mins on this video. there is a comparison onlune between nylon and polyester and I think for tarps the polyester wins. and being made in the usa and a little more noise as the only thing people are bringing up is crap. I dont care if it was made in the uk or usa.and anyone who has slept in the woods of texas knows your gonna have all kinds on noise from the area around you that the tarp will be the last thing u hear. sorry to ramble its just this was the greatest comparison ive ever seen. u made a subscriber out of me.

Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate it. ... You will be be really pleased with the DD 4X4. The DD tarps are the best value I've found and very well made plus very well designed. The other thing is that you're going to be shocked by how fast their shipping is. If you ordered today, I bet you have it in hand on Tuesday, or at the absolute latest maybe Wednesday. Everything I've gotten from them so far has been 2 business days and the last time, I actually had the package in hand 40 hours after I placed my order. ... Thanks for taking the time to watch! +TurtleWolf Pack They really do make an excellent tarp. I'm surprised by how little love the DD tarps get on most forums not completely populated by UK users. And, really, considering how fast they ship and how easy they make it to get their products in the US and Canada, it really surprises me how few reviews there are from US and Canadian youtubers. .... I've been seriously considering a hammock the last couple of years. I used to go to Hennesy's website pretty often and I've watched about 100 videos on their hammocks, but I think if I get one this year, I'll probably get one from DD. The tarp is excellent, so I sure can't see any reason their main product (hammocks) would be even better.

betweenfiveandseven www.camogroup.ca/store/c1/Featured_Products.html this is my local DD Dealer, not all the stock but shipping and service were top notch.
No affiliation other than a very happy customer. Also, look at the Chinook Tarps as well, usually half the cost of the DD Hammocks and I'ld say at least 90% as good.

Nice. That's a pretty good selection of DD gear. The Frontline XL is what I've been thinking about buying. .. I also noticed they have a British Army Issue Basha Tarp for a really reasonable price. The UK bushcraft forum fellows I talk to sometimes all seem to consider that absolutely essential gear. Thanks for the link!

betweenfiveandseven I think all he has left are dessert Bashas, I myself am hunting for the old DPM British Woodland pattern Basha. The dessert ones can be found for smoking deals all over Ebay.
The DPM seem to have dried up. Also consider those Prices are Canadian, even better deal for those of you south of the 49th.

I'm OK with the exchange rate ;) I buy a lot of different things from Canada. ... I'm also most interested in the DPM. Though, I suppose I should just be satisfied with the tarps I have. Between the Aqua Quest Defender (nearly identicle size as the DPM Basha) and the DD 3X3, I have some great gear. Plus I have the Etowah Outfitters tarp in this video. Though, I think I'm going to do a 'seam sealing with polyurethane' video on the Etowah and then maybe give it away at some subscribership or number of views milestone for the youtube channel sometime in the future.

OK...great review, and I like that you do a comparison of similar products whenever you perform a review.
So, I would have to agree that the DD tarp is probably superior, as long as the noise factor of the polyester material is not offensive, and/or a distraction or disturbance when outdoors, or trying to sleep.
So that begs the question...when will you do a comparison review with the Aqua Quest Defender tarp versus the DD tarp?
I'm surprised that you made no mention of the Aqua Quest tarp in this video, but I would like to know what you think when comparing both of them.
    Thanks as always!

    • @betweenfiveandseven
      @betweenfiveandseven  9 років тому +1

+Msilverhammer I like doing comparison videos. Sometimes there isn't a clear "winner" like there was between these two products, but I think when folks are trying to decide where their money is best spent, it's nice to see similar items 'head to head'. ... The size difference is why I didn't end up including the Aqua Quest in this video, but you're right. I think a comparison video is probably coming between the DD 3X3 and the Aqua Quest Defender Camo ;) And, I don't think it will be nearly as easy to decide one or the other of them is the "winner". It does sort of make me wish I had a King Camo and a DD Tarp XL to have closer to the same size tarps to compare.... But, then I suppose they would go unused because anything bigger than 10X10 I don't see as "personal shelter" sized, and I don't often spend my time outdoors in a group.
Just mention-able since we talked a little bit about it before: Two hours after I ordered the DD, I had a shipping notice in my inbox. Almost exactly 48 hours after I ordered, the FedEx guy handed it to me. DD ships Royal Post who hands off to FedEx. All the way from Scotland, this was in my hand in 48 hours. Speaking as an online shopper, that was both appreciated and impressive.
Thanks for taking the time to watch! I appreciate it.

    • @msilverhammer
      @msilverhammer 9 років тому +2

+betweenfiveandseven Yes, the Aqua Quest King Camo looks like a great tarp, as does the DD XL.
Don't write off a larger size tarp for single person use, as you will be happy that you have it, when you experience wind driven rain blowing sideways.
The King Camo weighs in at 5 pounds, so unless that additional weight is a deal breaker, carrying one shiuld be OK.
I guess the materials are different, but they both use tie outs, so very similar.
You will have to come up with some creativity in order to flesh out the pros and cons between the two tarps.
I would love to see a hyfdrostatic test, but probably only practical in a lab.
The huge Thunderstorms that I experience down here in Florida during the summer would put these tarps to the test for sure!
I think that the Etowah was rated at 20,000 mm of waterproof resistance, but not sure about the DD or Aqua Quest.
This is superior waterproofing, as many waterproof jackets are rated around 10,000 mm. A Marmot Precip jacket has that rating.
My Marmot Oracle jacket has the 2.5 layer Membrain waterproof system, which is rated at 20,000 mm.
By the way...I did notice that DD was a British Co. However they did have a link for U.S. orders, and obviously you have experienced good service.
As I stated previously, Etowah is a little guy, and they are probably resting on their laurels, and don't have the desire to raise the quality level, or the customer service level.
They may be in a comfort zone, perhaps in a manner similar to the American automobile manufacturers.
All it takes is a few customers/reviewers like you to start pointing out differences and shortcomings in both the product abd customer service, before the buyers go elsewhere with their dollars.
      Qye sera, sera!
      Thanks!

+betweenfiveandseven Just a little follow up on the DD Tarp...but first...
I just finished sharpening up a few folding knives, a Cold Steel Finn Bear, and a Schrade SCHF9 with a new sharpener I bought on EBAY from E-Cop.
It seems to work OK, as the blades have a nice edge, and will shave hair, but not cutting through paper as good as I would like.
Will have to experiment some more.
My Cold Steel Finn Bear sharpened the best, and will slice paper.
The Cold Steel Finn Bear is a very inexpensive, but excellent bushcraft knife, in the same class as the Swedish Mora knives, (I have the Morakniv Companion HD, Carbon Steel blade), and the French Opinel knives.
By the way, you could check out the Edgemaker at Edgemaker.com. If you do, let me know what you think about the product.
I purchased an Edgemaker Pro 331 for around $11.
I also checked the weight of the DD Tarp XL, and it is just 36 oz., so a tad over 2 pounds, as compared to 5 pounds for the Aqua Quest King Camo.
      The DD Tarp XL is almost 15' x 10 (4.5 M x 3 M) so around 140 to almost 150 sq. ft.
I don't know how you found DD Tarp site, but it seems that they have great products, and as you confirmed, the customer service and shipping is top notch.
The prices are very competitive when compared to Etowah, and especially the Aqua Quest products.
I got to tell you...I think that I have to give DD Tarp a try, and I will be looking at their hammocks too.
      Take care!

+betweenfiveandseven The shipping time doesn't even seem viable without some outrageous shipping cost. If you don't mind telling us, what was the shipping cost?

    • @betweenfiveandseven
      @betweenfiveandseven  9 років тому +1

+Msilverhammer The edgemaker seems to get great reviews on amazon and elsewhere. I can't offer any sort of an opinion on pull through sharpeners, though. I bought a selection of them one time thinking they would make good field sharpeners and therefore worthwhile daybag/backpack items. Smiths, Chefs Choice, Gerber, CRKT, Benchmade, UST, Lansky... I had less than stellar experiences with all of them and it really turned me off of that type of sharpener.
E-Cop! is awesome though. They've sold me several knives and a majority of my 511 gear has come from them. Good prices and fast shipping.
I don't have a Finn Bear, but I have a Finn Wolf. I like it now, but I didn't like it when I got it. The early ones had a messed up grind and it had a tendency to chip. Mine didn't just chip... the edge basically shattered the very first time it dug in to a little piece of hard wood to make a notch. Several little chunks of metal flaked off the edge and made it look quite a lot like a serrated blade... That one got fully re-profiled on the WSGSS and now it's a razor.
I found DD by watching youtube videos ;) My BCUSA has been out on loan long enough I decided to just let the fellow I loaned it to keep it. So, I was looking for a replacement. That's why I bought the Aqua Quest, too, really (needed a new tarp and watched some youtube videos). I sort of had my heart set on a 9X9 Kelty Noah's Tarp, but they don't make it in Camo, Coyote, or OD Green ... Anyway, I was watching youtube videos trying to figure out what might be a good replacement for the BCUSA, and I kept seeing video titles about the DD 3X3 and couldn't for the life of me figure out why anyone would use a 3 foot tarp even for a ground sheet let alone try to make any sort of shelter out of it. I ignored those vids for weeks until I looked closer at some of the video thumbnails and realized they had to be talking about meters, not feet.... I watched some really great videos, subscribed to a bunch of UK bushcrafters and hikers channels and then I went to DD's website, created an account, and saw the price in USD that included shipping. When I realized how similar in price and size they were to Etowah/Bens/BCUSA. ... My curiosity forced me to find out for myself if the DD was as good as the Etowah. I was absolutely astonished that it was superior. I really did not expect that.

Etowah is assembled in the US. The material is, of course, Chinese. So, you can go ahead and keep the snide stuff to yourself. No one else has time for that nonsense.
