Overall basic explanation of the working mechanisms of the two transmissions is okay, however I believe some statements grossly misrepresented the technologies. First, it's not etched stone that a transmission has to use actual gear cogs to transfer power from the engine to the wheels, whatever mechanism that does the work will suffice. A CVT IS an Automatic Transmission. NOT all automatics use torque converters, which role is to impel fluid (fluid coupling). . The DSG uses two physical clutches, yet it is an automatic transmission. The role of paddle shifts are more than "feel" or to lie to you that you're driving a manual indeed, there's a far more important reason which is to provide preset transmission ratios for specific driving conditions such as mud and rocks, which provide required torque to overcome the said conditions under which normal ratio variance won't be possible. All CVT's are not made equally. Toyota uses their inhouse Aisin transmission which have proven to be very reliable. Nissan outsources from Jatco. Subaru uses their inhouse Lineartronic transmission which again is very solid. Drive a WRX auto or even a Forester, and you'll get all the enthusiasm you need.

How it works is the when u select sport/manual mode, the transmission control unit SIMULATES gears and and assigns the pulleys fixed ratios, such that when u move from one gear to the next using ur paddles, the pulley system moves from one ratio to the next as pre-determined by the TCU. Using Amsoil synthetic cvt fluid drain n fill every 30k miles will prevent premature wear from overheating the fluid which can happen w stock Ideumitsu NS3 fluid.
Depends on application.. fuel efficiency, smooth/gap less/seamless gearshifting go for cvt, having application go for conventional automatic gear box... Remember with CVT especially Nissan avoid maniac acceleration, abd change fluid after every 30,000km, and if you are a CVT enthusiastic like me, and your own a nissan equiped with CVT transmission, you may consider installing aftermarket heat exchanger for your transmission. Note: Nissan CVT made by jatco most are junk and they fail due to design issues (whereby ball inside the grooves where pulleys slide for gear ratio changing tend to degrade very fast especially if you are a heavy foot driver.. so these balls tend to chew the grooves edge until grooves become big and allow balls to roll over past the grooves edge when big torque is applied hence leads to failure. Also since the pulleys where belt for transferring engine torque is attached are teeth less, compared to teethed gears in conventional automatic gear box, chances for slippage is very likely especially if you are using wrong or very dirt transmission fluid, so this also leads to premature failure of CVT transmission.. Conclusion: CVT transmission is a very good transmission if you use it as per intended purposes and if properly maintained.. Dont use cvt Cars if the purpose of purchasing that car is to carry heavy loads, towing, heavy foot driver or if most of the time car will be used in hills roads. Remember; Toyota, Honda make very reliable CVT transmission with no issues compared to other brands, bur Nissan make worse CVT transmission system.
