  • The World Cyber Games 2005 was hosted in the repressive state of Singapore, at Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre from 16 November to 20 November 2005. There were over 800 players from 67 countries. Over 39,000 spectators turned up at the games to cheer for the players. The grand prize for the game is US$435,000.
This documentary focuses much on XellOs.
Name: XellOs - 서지훈 Seo Ji Hoon
    Main Race: (T)Terran
Team: CJ Entus, Air Force ACE (current)
    Birth Date: 1985-02-09
    AKAs: XellOs[yG]
Nickname(s): The Perfect Terran, DDR Terran ("Masturbate" Terran)
Trivia: XellOs was also known as the "DDR Terran". When GO was visited, written on a whiteboard was the comment "If XellOs refrains from DDR, he wins OSL." While foreigners may interpret the acronym DDR as the famous game Dance Dance Revolution, Koreans also use DDR when referring to masturbation or "Ddal Ddal Re." When GoRush commented that the progamer he respects the most is XellOs due to his "night work," XellOs was sealed as the DDR Terran.

Looking at this in 2021, brings back a lot of nostalgic feelings, even though I was a baby at that time. The feelings of 2000s... They were the best. I wish I could feel it once again as an adult. Ji-Hoon Seo(XellOs) is one of my all-time favorite SC1 progamers along with Seong-Eun Lee(firebathero). Recently I've gotten into the world of SC1, I found this documentary... And it's really nice to watch this, seeing him here was quite unexpected. Happy to see GO(CJ), which is also my favorite team... except for sAviOr.
Early gen progamers used to be paid small or none while they were still new. They would be paid properly, have a nice facility when they have a spaonsor. GO wasn't sponsored until it became CJ- so the players had to cope with poorer conditions. As these early progamers shaved the way of E-Sports of Korea, later gamers can now play in a much better environment, with higher pays and general respect. Salute to all those SC1 progamers, specially the ones in early and mid 2000s.
In Korea, there used to be a rumor that the National Geographic mainly focused on XellOs because he was well-looking. I agree to that idea, but who konws? x)

The entire idea of a documentary is to be as accessible to the audience as possible, in this regard EVERYTHING that is approached, whether it is APM, Salary, Teams, etc, must be approached as though the audience has no idea what it is, otherwise people that aren't already interested in e-sports will be confused and instantly turn off the program.
This documentary isn't for people that already know a lot about e-sports, but for people that are looking to learn more, that's a good thing!

@glitcher999 They sign long term contracts, with pro teams, with guaranteed yearly salaries (sometimes over $100.000). They actually spend most of their time playing in team vs. team games, not in individual tournaments.
The individual tournaments and the prizes from them are just a bonus, not their main income.

Most of the top tier pros makes more money then most white collar jobs, (those who are in the big teams) EGs incontrol just married a former miss something state in US. Most of the pro players care about their health and most of them dont look like geeks, google Loda, Akke, Grubby there is only a minority of the pros who actually now look like people who live of gaming, because alot of the prepare for tournaments are in the gym, as good health makes you better prepared for 2 to 3 hour games.

@DonMega187 Lol, they're not just spamming commands, look at their replays, they can command multiple units to do their specific tasks in just a fraction of a second. They lose only in positioning, harrassments and mineral/vespene deficit. If you look at their replays, in a clash, can you see units stuck up on traffic congestion? NO! In early minutes, let's say up to 5 minutes. If you have that 300+ apm and you use it accordingly, you can be ahead of your enemy having only less than 300 apm.

That still doesn't address the issue. "Living a life" is relative. To impose a personal vision of what a good life is on another is very ignorant. They are respected within their own niche. That might be as close to a general of what a good life is if there ever was one. The fact that they work a disproportionate time to other sports is irrelevant.

@ibasicallytotalyrule getting in shape meaning doing cardio and such, as a sc progamer's heart rate can go up to 150 beat/min at times; also, sitting down in front of a computer for 10 hours a day is just too taxing for most people, that's why progamer teams sometimes have football games or other group outings to keep the players physically fit. not everyone goes to the gym to put on pounds in a desperate attempt to attract the opposite sex, and think that's all there is in life.

I just want to pointed out, even the best pros carreer span average 5-8 years. After that what happens? Especially in XellOs' case where he started pro-gaming so young, and he skipped education. You imagine finding a job would be so hard, and really low payed. What if he didn't become that successful in e-sports? The possibilities becoming a pro are ridiculously low. So yea every parent's worst nightmare is to have a kid broke, without futurenor hope for any successful life.

Tell me what really matters then? Esports is a passion for a lot of people. Also I dont think you can compare it to regular sports. Football stars earn a ridiculous amount of money but esports stars dont really earn that much, and next to nothing in comparison. Most progamers arent wellpaid living luxurious lives, they are regular people who live simple lives but who love gaming and competition.

@cragfrag That is true. Since keyboard and mouse is like the grand father, pc games get praised, hence the fact that older joysticks were not online. Likewise, the world of games will soon evolve to joystick, soon voice command thanks to Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Endwar. It will take a long time though, right now everyone is focusing to better the internal stuff, but not the external inputs like joysticks, mouse and keyboards.

I am arguing the amout of time to life a life, not an idea of what living a life should be. Also the gaming house system inhibits individual competitors because the teams refuse point blank to play with them or even talk to them except afew words when they do pro matches. It devides gamers and is anti free speach because the boys are told to keep their mouth shut. Imagine if your best mate joined one of the teams and never came round your house again and blanked you and your family.

@viper19861986 I never said they CAN'T be top players (hence NesTea). I said that when looking at all older players, you notice that they aren't as good as the players under 23. It's possible that a player above the range can compete (ex: NesTea), but almost none has been able to achieve this. And honestly, the GSL is the toughest league in the world. White-Ra hasn't shown that he can compete with players from the GSL. Sure, he's a top foreigner, but among Koreans, he is average.

The U.S. State Department claimed that the light water reactors could not be used to produce bomb grade material and yet in 2002 urged Russia to end its nuclear co-operation with Iran for the reason that it didn’t want Iran armed with weapons of mass destruction. At the time, Russia was building light water reactors in Iran. According to the State Department, light water reactors in Iran can produce nuclear material but somehow the same rule doesn’t apply in North Korea.

Henry Sokolski, head of the Non-proliferation Policy Education Centre in Washington, who stated, “LWRs could be used to produce dozens of bombs’ worth of weapons-grade plutonium in both North Korea and Iran. This is true of all LWRs."
“These reactors are like all reactors, they have the potential to make weapons. So you might end up supplying the worst nuclear violator with the means to acquire the very weapons we’re trying to prevent it acquiring,” said Sokolski.

We gave Israel nukes in 1964, declassified.
Also, Ramsfield gave North Korea a 200 million dollar contract to develop light water reactors. Also, don't forget about the $95 million given to North Korea to build two proliferation-proof nuclear reactors.
In 2004, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan’s atom bomb program, admitted sharing nuclear technology via a worldwide smuggling network that included facilities in Malaysia that manufactured key parts for centrifuges.

If I remember correctly, I asked you for an example and you didn't provide me with any. Therefore wouldn't it be logical to conclude that you have no evidence? And me proving anything is like proving there isn't a green mouse living in my basement. Unless I provide you a picture of every single progamer.

I started out as a jock-an asshole in high school. Then I joined the US Marines which in turn allowed me to hone my skills as a killer and travel the world. However for the past few years I have been slowly transforming into a nerd. ... The only way to survive in this world is becoming a nerd

As opposed to pretty much every other IT job, which involve sitting around using a keyboard? The only difference is, it's a job they love more than anything else. If you really think it's sad to do what you love for a living, you're either lying, jealous, or lead a very shitty life...

@agpshadow If you mean sc1 then it staying alive has nothing to do with foreigners or north americans, it never did, it was always the koreans who took it to another level. Also if you really think sc is rocks-paper-scissor that just shows how naive you are despite you saying what I mentioned before.

Explain to me what is wrong. And I have mainstream news articles. Exlain to me how I am wrong regarding North Korea. Gogogo. Are you saying I lied? Prove you're not lying, since i'm perfectly willing to prove i'm not lying. You probably don't even have a college degree.

@Ig0tFiSh point taken but it was still poorly formulated. This reportage was clearly not aimed to people interested by the game itself. the informations about the general phenomena are really interesting but when they talk about the game they sound so noobish.
