If you look at a map, you can also see that the border is the old path of Hall's Stream. It meanders, so now parts of the US are on the westerly side of the stream with Canada, and parts of Canada on are the easterly side with the US.
This was not an uncommon issue with old time borders, where you'd write down a reference to the end of some river but later on upon better mapping you'd find that it was not as neat a point as expected or where you had assumed it to be.
