  • I took the new Powered Up L and XL motors from the LEGO Technic 42099 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader set along with the previously released M motor and tried to compare to their Power Functions counterparts to see if there's any significant difference between them.

    I'm really sad they discontinued power functions because there was nothing wrong with it, it worked fine and made its way into hundreds of sets and always worked

      it also took away the need to engineer gearboxes/make more reliable boxes since you can just program the motors to adjust at certain constraints or switch over a gear rather (which is similar to just using another motor) automatically instead of engineering it with the actual lego pieces.

    Essentially, it's pretty much the same, but with a bullet in the foot in the form of a crap app that might brick our motor in a few years if TLG abandons suport for it.

      Good news, lego released the specifications to the BT protocol used in the hubs so anybody can write code that works with them. There's also a couple of cool project like pybricks, so we don't have to rely on TLG for support on it.

    Instead of trying to make them smaller and compact so they could be used in more and smaller mocs, they make them bigger and harder to implement

    I believe the power up motors are actually the same motors inside LEGO packaging. The big change is they are controlled by the app so that LEGO is more in control of their product.

    I don't know about you, but I really wish that LEGO would release a series of smaller-size motors and battery packs (I'm thinking 1- to 2-studs wide/2- to 3-studs tall/2- to 4-studs long) that could be used for smaller MOCs in the 4- to 6-stud wide range.

      If you're up for little bit of hacking together you can power the ir receiver and power functions motors with a 9v battery. Most 9v batteries are just around 2 studs wide. Not entirely sure how you'd do that with powered up - you'd probably have to strip down the battery box. The train community been begging for smaller batter boxes and receivers since the introduction of the RC train system but that's mainly fallen on deaf ears.

      That would be extremely nice for minifig scale cars like Speed Champions. They probably wouldn't go very fast, but it would still be fun to see minifigures zooming around

    I'm not sure I'll invest in any PU until it's much better refined. I'll sooner go for a PFX brick with its extensive light and sound functions and limitless customizability.

    XL motors are better for cranes and crawlers... there slow however got more torque i heard

    I noticed that many of the Control + Motors are slower than their PF counterparts (in terms of RPM). Does the slower RPM of the Control + Motors have a noticeable effect on MOCs or no?

      The XL motor is actually much faster, the difference of the others is not really noticeable

    That overshoot things might be intentional. There was a technique invented by Disny for there animationics to prevent them from rattling caused by hard stops. That could be employed here.

    Can someone explain how and why you can't make a MOC model out of 42099? The gyro tilt sensors would be very useful in other projects

      Because currently only the Control+ app can connect to the new hub and you'd be limited to the functions on the app and you also need to use the 2 XL / 1 L motor combination. Once the Powered Up app will be updated to support the new elements and it'll have the ability to have customisable controls then you can use it for MOCs. The platform has great potential to use the sensors and the interactive motors, we just need to wait for the software to support it properly.

      You technically can, but it has to use 2 XL motors for drive and one L motor for steering, because the app is only compatible with the 42099.
      PF also has a proper servo motor, which works much better than using an L motor, and has more torque.

    Hello any idea about what is New Smart Hub's gate 'D' for? 4th port I mean. Can we connect hubs parallel ? I tried to connect 4th L motor to gate 'D' - but it is not working. Any idea? I try to do 6x6 with 3 XL and 1 L motor. Is it possible with new power motor setup? thanks

      There's no specific usage for port D, it works just as all the other ports. It won't work with the Control+ app as that is only designed to control specific sets, those profiles won't use any additional motors, they'll actually refuse to connect if you have a different motor configuration. For any custom control you need to use the Powered Up app, I suggest to check my videos about the app and the custom control possibilities.

    Hi I want to build a decent RC technic car with BuWizz 3.0 + 2xBuwizz motors. But I cannot find a proper servo motor in the market. Can I use 45503 EV3 Medium Servo Motor? Is it better or worse than (response time, turning degrees...etc.) 88004 Power Functions Servo Motor?

    Gonna stick to Power functions since I see no use In Using it now mabey but only because I am making Train layout I may even Use 9v but Power up if I habe no way in saving space in a train moc

    I just hate how the battery box alone costs $90. You used to be able to get a full power functions set for that much. (Tracked racer). An old AA box cost like $10. I get that it adds a receiver in it but it shouldn’t be costing that much, especially since it doesn’t even come with a remote.

    I love legos and play for about 35 years and have a 6yold son now, and want to jump into motors but are think of what direction i should start from scratch. I guess o should dtat with Powered up and later Inventor? Never had contact with the old pnes, so, maybe just go full new stuff? Thanks!!!

      The best would be to buy one of the new smaller RC sets to experiment with it, like 42109 or 42124. The the electric components can be used for custom builds later on.

      Power Functions won't become cheaper either as they are not produced anymore. You can either get some stock now but then you'll be stuck with the old system, or get some PU motors. They are cheaper to buy in sets btw like 42109.

      You can also buy them individually at lego.com. The best is to start with e complete set that has all the parts so you can study how things work together, then you can use those parts to experiment and make your own design.

      The cable is not compatible. You need to buy a 3rd party adapter if you want to make it work, but they are not cheap.

      Great question, I think it's because a BUNCH of 3rd party companies have proven it can easily be better than LEGO is handling it. I use a Buwizz and love the customizable, programmable interface. You can link multiple Buwizz together for BOTH increased battery life (in parallel across packs) AND you get 4 more channels with every pack. With the ability to bind multiple channels to one controller, or to set parameters for how and when motors interact by using power curves. Or to correct alignment when your servo goes to crap.
      I can't say enough good things about how Buwizz improved on PF. It's really sad to see LEGO disregarding this.

      Don't rush with that, you only have the Control+ app so you strictly need to stick to the 2 XL + 1 L combination, otherwise it won't work. If I were you I'd wait until the Powered Up app is updated to support the novelties.

    the XL PF motor is a slight screw-up, in general i don't like it because of its horrible RPM and not much higher torque from the astounding L motor. i just use L and M motor over XL

      The XL is the most powerful one, best for moving heavy stuff

      @@RacingBrick yes that's true but i remember seeing this comparing table of the motors and though the XL was most powerful as you said it had 180 RPM and it said 90 n or something on the table, the L had 78.5 n or something and as you said has 365 RPM, for me, the RPM and torque of the L motor outweigh the XL motor.

      @@pyrotection you should check again that table, I guess it was Philo's motor comparison. The XL motor has 14,5 N.cm torque and 146 rpm at 9V, the L motor has 6,48 N.cm and 272 rpm. This means if we slow down the L motor to the same speed as the XL motor it would have only 12,07 N.cm torque. So this means the XL motor has approximately 15% more torque at the same speed than the L motor.

      @@pyrotection the purpose is simply different. L is great for small and mid-size builds where weight is important and you need a balance between speed and torque. XL is good for heavier and/or slower builds where torque is more important.

      @@HAZZZZZZZZZAAAA I'm not sure which one is "new" for you. There's the Technic hub (88012) that you could see in my blog post, and there's the City hub (88009) that is similar in dimensions to the Power Functions AAA battery box.

      @@RacingBrick it would be the city hub, the older trains used to have an external infra red sensor you had to plug through before attaching to the battery hub. I can see the connectors have changed from the top to the side or the hub, was wondering if there was any difference in regards for that.

      That's the Power Functions train controller, designed to control train motors. If you try to control a servo with it for steering, you'll quickly realize that it's too slow and not accurate enough for that purpose.

      Because currently the remote on its own only works with the AAA hub and specific sets, like the trains or the Batmobile. For anything else you need to use the Powered Up app to configure the behavior of the remote and the motors.

      Sorry, I actually remembered wrong, that was the situation earlier. I tested it and the remote does work with the L and XL motors, but they need to be connected to the AAA hub. The remote does not work out of the box with the Technic (AA) hub.

      The remote offers gradual speed control for the train motor, and "bang-bang" (on/off) control for the other motors. This is intentional, since this remote does not have proportional joysticks, just buttons. With the buttons you can control a train gradually increasing or decreasing the speed, since the train motor is constantly on. This would be very weird for regular motors, this is why the default behavior is different for them.
      Regarding the phone, I tested the app with a Redmi 7a (sub-$100) and it works perfectly fine. The app is required for configuration, there are tons of different usage options so it'd be impossible to have everything built in as a default behavior. Hopefully LEGO will release a remote with joysticks for speed control, or they make PS4/Xbox controllers usable like with the 51515 Mindstorms set.

    Conclusion: only thing the PF is better in is XL motor power. I do prefer PF, because I don't know PU since I've never used it.

      The power of the XL motors is pretty similar but their base speed is different. PF is still easier to use for custom building as the software side of PU is not complete yet.

    Why not divorce from lego a bit and use hobby servos, motors, ESCs? There's 3D printed bracketry to mount these parts in and they'll provide far better control and propulsion than the native parts LEGO themselves supply.

      @@RacingBrick Eh, a brushed 280 won't overpower lego gears or axles and would be power for days on the sorts of rigs most lego RC stuff is, like taht big full suspension off-roader you showed. Brushless, sure, but not brushed. And on the electronics side it's a no brainer really. App controlled RC always sucks; I had a Parrot drone that was app controled and it would never fly. Did what it wanted to do which was usually to take off, drift a bit, flip over, and eat shit.
      I've been mulling over RC-ifying some old old technic kits, either that early dozer or the tractor. Something nice and slow. I've done enough fiddling with Lego to know slow wins; the axles and beams wear out super super fast if you're pushing the speedo up.

    Hey an adult fan of Lego hear.
    First of all with the power functions Servo Motors.
    You may be wrong on needing a 3rd party controller 4 proportional control on the servo motor.
    I do know for shure that Lego does or did at one time.
    have the speed control controller like that was used for the Lego Power functions trains.
    That's supported the proportional control
    Although it had distinct positions for Speed and position of the servo motor.
    Not a analog type stick.
    It. Had 15 position dials.
    Off Seven forward spreads and seven reverse speeds.
    Or 15 positions total Center which would be off.
    And seven positions from Center To 90 degrees both directions.
    As well as there was too buttons to stop either motor immediately.
    no matter what position that dial or Knob was in.
    And also small power functions remote the full forward full reverse And off with the small power functions remote.
    Was the first one available for the system as well as the majority of models would use it.
    That variable speed remote as I would call it.
    did not stop the Motors if it lost signal to the power functions receiver.
    All so which was ideal for trains.
    Also recently I heard some talk on the internet.
    that that speed controlled power functions remote is no longer being sold.
    but I have not been able to verify this as fact.
    So you can take that in the information from the internet with a grain of salt.
    All so does eney one know where you can buy that third-party remote.
    that he was using for the demo with the servo motor.
    and how much it cost and who makes it.
    I would like to know and I'm sure a lot of uther people I would as well.

      You're right the train remote offers proportional control, but it has very little practical use as the whole operation is really laggy. You could only control a very slow vehicle and it would be still inaccurate with those dials.
      About the controller I used - it's a simple Bluetooth gamepad for Android, you can find tons of these. It's an ipega PG-9025, not sure if it is still available. Google it and you'll find all the information/reviews/videos you are looking for.

    Powered Up can be used for more simple and compact builds that don't have a lot of space and have little function, no more than connecting a hub to an M motor to get something to work. Power functions can be used for larger builds and more complex builds, since you can stack theoretically infinite wires onto one battery box.

      @@RacingBrick Actually the functions is more and in the straight sense of it (I'm not talking about the funny gimmicks of the app). but that's because of the actual available elements. however the range and the fact it uses IR is the bad point.
      Also the remote brick have only 2 channels but the fact that motors and other elements can be stacked is a good plus.
      I mean if you want to use control + with two motors that does the same thing you still need an extra channel to do that, while the PF you could to that with its basic two channel IR module.
      I prefer the new module in many ways, because it's the whole unit all by itself, however I don't like the fact it requires a smartphone to work and have no other way of control.
      Sure a system like the control + is technically way better than what PF is. I mean the bluetooth element allows a lot of things to be done. Better range, better response time.
      The actual motors are servos which means they have that flexibility right from the start.
      however I think they should have kept the stackable element from PF, and keep it simple from a modding perspective ...
      I think they should have made an app modular from the start which means people can mod the model right on
      And I mean here to have control elements to set up with the lego app but well I think we should see more how the whole thing evolves ...
      PF could have evolved too from what it is actually it's not like proportional control was unavailable from the system, the train IR remote allowed that, even if it wasn't the most practical thing to do.
      They could have made a radio remote with 2 proportional levers and 4 buttons and a hub with 4 PF outlets and it would have been a major improvement already
      My main complaint about the new system is that you don't have any remote (except for the powered up) and the connectors which doesn't allow any stacking.
      For me both systems have their pros and cons and even if bluetooth is actually better in any conceivable way, the lack of actual modularity makes me kind of cold regarding this new system.
      But PF wasn't that great at launch either I mean there was no remote and even the old 9V system allowed some remote with the wires despite them being shit ...

    Lego technic would be great if they made actually decent motors, not using bottom of the barrel chinese no name brand ones. But I guess they wouldn't be able to sell them at 5000% markup then, making quality mechanisms would be bad for their business. Like for real, they sell 15 cent motors encased in 5 cent piece of plastic for 10 bucks - is that a ripoff or what.

      Do you have anything to back this up? I literally have dozens of LEGO motors being used and abused on a daily basis and I had only one single Servo failing so far.

      @@RacingBrick Nobody said that the cheapest chinese motors fail within 3 hours of operation. But you can disassemble the motor and look at the components inside, look up part number if it was even printed on the presumably completely off-brand no-name motor, look up what that kind of motor costs.

      @@RacingBrick Extremely noisy. Horrendous battery life. Pathetic torque and even worse speed. Way too heavy for its power rating. These days ten dollars can buy you a high quality brand name brushless motor with really good electrical efficiency, tight manufacturing standards, and extremely high output power (compared to LEGO motors). If you scale it down for practical usage with plastic parts and skip on finishing in favor of plastic frame, then $10 will make a really good and still more powerful motor and there will be upwards of 50% profit margin, which is great for a physical product. But that's nowhere near as great as 5000%, is it.

      @@michaelbuckers remember, this is a plastic toy system. You don't need more torque and more power, this is not the brushless RC world. One XL motor can already easily twist an axle, two L motors geared up will melt the plastic. If you want hobby grade RC performance then you need to look elsewhere.

      @@slybunda if I compare them with a direct drive then the speed and the torque will be very different and it is difficult to compare the real performance. This is why most people thought for the first sight that the PU XL motor is much weaker than the PF one. In reality their torque is pretty much equal if you use gearing to compensate the internal gearing, that's exactly what I wanted to show.

      It really depends on what you want to achieve. For starters the easiest is to get a smaller set with Powered Up motors and hub (like 42109 or 42124) and explore the abilities. Then going forward you'll know better what you need for the next steps.
