    Done a lot of simracing with Dirt Rally 2 and this summer i was lucky enough to actually drive a real deal Volkswagen Polo R5 and I was surprised of how familiar the real deal felt! The DR developers have done a great job and the experience is to some level quite transferable! So I very much approve of your approach to doing a real deal Rally 😎

      BeamNG is another option. It has really good weight transfer physics. It's lacking in a few other areas, but the real jeopardy it brings is probably good for transferring to real-world. I mainly do RWD, so maybe it's different in BeamNG's 4WD cars.
      RBR is probably still more well rounded though. After spending so much time in RBR and BeamNG, Dirt 2 feels insanely easy. Those front wheels are basically glued to the road 😅

    Looking at your footage, there are two things that stand out:
    1. Unlearn leaving your thumb to "push" the wheel. That's an easy way to break your finger. At this point, you should be going hand over hand way sooner, or just go one handed for a moment.
    2. You need a lot more left foot braking to induce more weight transfer and oversteer ruing cornering. You rely on the steering too much, instead of helping yourself with the brakes. Not only this will make you faster, you'll have to turn the wheel less, saving yourself the workout :D

  • @Shinny1338
    @Shinny1338 17 днів тому +34

    Yo one of the biggest game changers I had using the games for practice was matching gear ratios. It made thinking about corners in the game so much closer to what it is IRL. The stock rally gear set is enough that you can chuck a car in and just bang gears until you're in the power. You'll get much more out of the game if it's set to the same ratios. For DR2.0 you can go up the side of the jump in the dirt fish map to beach yourself. Then floor it to see what the top speed of each gear is

    • @RyansRoadToRally

      Oooo that’s a great call. Thanks!

    • @geoffwnz
      @geoffwnz 16 днів тому +3

      If you know which model code of gearbox is in the real car, you can get the gear ratios and match the numbers. eg the TY752VB5CA that's in mine with its 4.444 final drive etc.

    • @Shinny1338
      @Shinny1338 16 днів тому +1

      @geoffwnz DR2.0 and EA WRC don't use gear ratios on their sliders for some reason. Huge gripe about it for me. It's literally just some decimal numbers that don't correlate to anything. They'd have done better just displaying the top speed of each gear in then menu

    • @zdkama
      @zdkama 16 днів тому +2

      @@Shinny1338 Lol those are the ratios, they're just inverted. Divide 1 by any of those ratios to get a number you are more familiar with. Final drive ratio of 0.235 is 1/0.235 = 4.255 : 1 gears. First gear ratio of 0.425 is 2.35 : 1.
      If you notice 5th gear is often 1.00, 1/1 = 1, aka 1:1 ratio. They're just written/stored this way to save all the division calls. Computers love to multiply and hate dividing.

    • @Shinny1338
      @Shinny1338 16 днів тому +2

      @zdkama well that is super annoying haha. I know I did a search on it awhile back and all the threads I could find had no idea what the numbers were talking about. I wonder how close I got then. Will definitely take another look at them

    Great video! Love the idea that you are making every spec on the stim rig close to your own real rally car. The driving on the Dirt Rally 2 was amazing. Those pendulum turns were awesome. I want to suggest one thing, which is to take each stim rig driving experience as much as a real one. Since you are building muscle memory on the stim rig, you are also building your driving habits. Driving a used rally car with an actual person next to you probably has more things to consider than going full throttle on Dirt Rally 2. Things like watching the car's temperature and minding the RPM between gears, etc. Most importantly, in my opinion, is that the life of the co-driver is in your hands. I suggest aiming for safety and completeness first when driving on the stim rig. Maybe drive around 80% of your ability. Leave some room for mistakes. All the rally montages on UA-cam have taught me that even a tiny mistake can be catastrophic.
    These are just my two cents. By no means am I trying to lecture you or anything. You are on a path that probably every rally fan dreams of. I truly enjoy watching your journey along the way. Wish you the best.

    @sponke99 17 днів тому +3

    I also tried this and imo not worth it, although it's super fun and immersive. But it's for training in this case.
    I think the high steering column angle (20+ degrees) works assuming you are using stock seats and are sat up high, whereas a bucket seat you are sitting much lower, with the steering column angle straining your wrists more since the designers didn't think you'd be sitting that low. Also having the seat fairly high compared to the floor (or pedal plate) is fine with softer brake setups, but kinda kills your back if you have a stiff pedal.
    I've ended up looking at newer WRC cars for reference and it's a lot flatter and closer to your old setup, more comfortable to drive in as well. So I guess the choice is realism (for training) that's constrained by a modified 90s passenger sedan vs modern ergonomics. You'll find the newer Subaru WR cars (97 onwards) also vary in seating positions quite a bit

    Looking forward to seeing the real rally footage! A couple critiques on your sim driving if you don't mind taking them. I have been top of the leader boards on DR2 (Mostly RWD), and have had multiple trips to Dirtfish.
    Hooking your thumbs in the wheel like you do is a good way to brake them in a crash, you also lock yourself into a steering position where you cannot make modular adjustments. The hand that pushes the wheel has the most control if you need to counter, so you should be taking the other hand off and feeding hand to hand or hand over hand more. I prefer to shuffle until I need full steering lock, at which I switch to hand over hand.
    You should use your left foot on the brake more during corners to reduce how much you have to use your hands. 13:25 you have a big understeer moment where you are doing both issues I am pointing out, your thumb is hooked at max steering before having to take your hands off the wheel to add any more. Your left foot hovers over the brake, but you don't use it. If you had squeezed a little brake in while keeping the gas pedal pinned, the car would have more weight over the front wheels and neutralize that understeer.
    Also I am friends with the videographer that created the camera rig Sam Albert had on his Ferrari powered STI for OTR the previous season. I can put you in touch if you want to get any shots like that!

    You may want to next add haptics and Vr. I got 2 cheap 50mm resonance speakers for my pedals but you could get the simagic ones for your brake and gas. Set them up in simhub. I also recommended getting 2 tactile transducers for your seat, you will need an amp for those. That with the a meta quest for Vr its pretty darn convincing. The haptics is a great low cost add that ups realism a lot.

    Clutching in through heavy braking zones for slow corners is a habit you should try to get out of
    Using your gears takes strain off your brakes and over long stages could mean the difference between finishing with working brakes or not

I was wondering if you could measure the angle of the pedal faces? As in the part of the pedal that your feet touch. I've inverted my pedals recently and would be interesting to compare. Thanks.

    Does a 2015+ STI steering rack fit in those? They are a lot quicker / snappier.

    I don't know much ab sim racing so perhaps this is an obvious thing - but in an actual car you aren't sat in the centre; you're sat to the left or right. Your setup seems to mimic this by shifting the viewport across your monitors, but then you end up with the dash bent across the centre and right monitor (for LHD). Is it not possible to mount the monitors to the right of the chair/ the chair to the left of the monitors so you are actually sat in that position? and then the viewport wouldn't be so warped?
    Anyway, I love the channel, and good luck with everything!

    Would you share your FOV and FFB settings in the game? (FOV with your actual distance to screen). I struggle to find a "real" feel on the rally games compared to iracing or acc.

    Thank you for this video, extremely helpful for someone as me struggling with sim rig ergonomics even without using a bucket seat and using a seat from a real car!
    Just wondering which app did you use to measure the angles?
    Also, do you mind sharing all the measurements? some that I really struggle with is the pedals height I think because I don't have them inverted like a real car

    Is Dirt Rally 2 that close to real life so you can actually train on it? Wonder about physics of those rally games since I imagine it is quite more difficult to simulate it than GT3 racing for example.

    Great video as always! Hey man, did you delete any of your older videos about the sim racing to real rally goal? I think there were some videos just with your Logitech setup and you upgrading and reviewing stuff upgrade by upgrade, that I can't find anymore. Cheers!
    Edit: Or am I misremembering?

    Ryan, omg, there is no way I am going to be able to overtake you at LD Community racing after watching this.
    One question: Looked like you always had brake pressure full on in braking zones, is that the case? I personally don't understand yet how brake effectively in DR2 :)

      @@klausklavikus3836 Well, when I was building my setup, I had a small budget, so I had to go for a Hp vr 1000-100, which is a Window Mixed Reality headset. I got it for like 70 euros used and it's serving me great. I had to go for a low end also because I had only a laptop with a 3060, so not that much raw power. Now I am upgrading my computer to a good desktop and I'll prob be upgrading. If you have the budget and the power I would suggest you don't buy a WMR as they are EOL and the screen isn't very good (onli 1440^2 per eye and the ips is only 90hz). I don't have experience with anything else, but when I'll upgrade I'll prob go with a quest 2. The screen is more then enough and I'll take the longer battery life and lower price tag compared to the new 3s
