Remember watching this live on World of Sport on British TV. Massive KR fan at the time, I bet he felt like shooting his mechanics on the start line! Very rare mistake with Kel Carruthers as his chief. Great season although the OW54 was not competive, along with Bazzer's last GP win. Luchinelli came totally out of the blue but could never repeat his feat after switching to Honda the following year. Mamola should have been a W/C during the '80's but never had the luck even though he finished 2nd several times and was always fairly consistent. Met "Croz" at Donington in '84 and managed to get his autograph. Great days for bike racing.
Always remember watching this as KR's mechanics had cocked up with the front brake pads. One of the few meetings to be shown live on British TV at the time other than the British GP at Silverstone. I think the only GP to be raced on a Saturday also.
At this time most of the bikes had a "square 4 cylinder two stroke layout" similar to a Suzuki RG500. But race leader Boet Van Dulmen,Was using a 4 cylinder across the frame two stroke, know as a TZ 500 engine, with the outside cylinders reversed,so the exhaust system had a cleaner run threw the frame etc.
Watch it and weep. The two strokes are gone and the 500cc class eliminated. Bazza is gone and Kenny Roberts retired and this once great circuit (Assen) now emasculated.
I put Motogp so those under the age of 25yrs will come across these videos. Most of them will only know the Spanish run Motogp Series, and not the F.I.M World 500cc GP series.
@@yds250 OK, I understand. By the way, I forgot to tell you that I really enjoy these videos - some of those races I've seen myself, I lived close to the Assen circuit, but to see it again really brings back the memories!
@@joepkortekaas8813 Glad you enjoy the videos. Assen What a great Circuit . I wish the Circuit could be as it was before 1983. Some Great Dutch Riders in the 500cc also back then .
I bet Kenny Roberts had some choice words for the idiot mechanic who put his brake pads on inside out, and also pretty sure that was the mechanics last race for that team.
I was there! 15 years old... Man,... how time flies... Thanks for posting!

what bikes are ?
Pas compliqué, yamaha et Suzuki 💕🇮🇲👁️✨😇
are these 3 or 4 cyl 500cc 2 strokes?
4................wb
Mainly four cyl. They were restricted to 500cc in those days.
Back when Assen was the shit!

Lucchinelli's style must have certainly bore an influence on Schwantz's riding later. They appear to ride identically.

Limes Barry Sheene but never seemed right on a Yamaha.
It was not called MotoGP in those days. It's Boet van Dulmen, not Dulman!
