  • An interval is the distance between two notes, but - what do we do when there are different ways to measure it?
If you don't know what I'm talking about with the "major scale" or you get lost somewhere in this video, you can find the first part of this mini-series here:
What is a MUSICAL SCALE? The definitive explanation | Jaime Altozano
    • Qué es una ESCALA MUSI...
Intervals can be measured chromatically and diatonically, that is, by semitones or by their function within the scale. Consequently they have a given name and a family name, "major second", "minor third", "perfect fourth". The given name ('minor, major") is the chromatic interpretation and the family name ("second, fourth") is the diatonic interpretation. In this video I'll explain it in multiple ways.
    TRANSLATOR'S NOTE:
    1. Given and family names, as well as nouns and adjectives, work differently in Spanish and English, so the above is not a literal translation of what Jaime writes. Instead it's an internally consistent way of making (I hope) the same point in English.
    2. I've translated the Spanish note names, Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Si Do, to the English/Germanic note names C D E F G A B. I did this because, although I could use the similar-looking English syllables Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do, it would be even more confusing and misleading than the alternative. These names in English mean something else, they belong to the "moveable Do" system, designed for ear training and "solmisation", in which "Do" simply refers to the first note of whatever major scale you are working with (so the notion of "Do♯" or "Mi♭" in English is nonsense). In Spanish, Do means C and only C, and that's how Jaime is using it. Unfortunately, this means the subtitles don't correspond with the graphics. But since you can see the piano keyboard, you can probably work it out. All musicians who encounter different languages have to learn to cope with this at some point, all the Romance languages do it the same way, so now is no worse a time than any. Neither alternative is ideal. Maybe Jaime will make a video on what a headache this is, at some point.
    MUSIC IN THE VIDEO
I use music by Piglet Spacey! Specifically from their album Trino which you can buy on Bandcamp here:

I've also used a song of my own and one from somwhere else. If you recognise it I'll love you.
