  • William Green chats with Samantha McLemore, the founder of Patient Capital Management. After graduating magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University, she was hired by investing legend Bill Miller and spent 20 years working with him. They co-managed Miller Opportunity Trust, a top-performing mutual fund, for a decade until Bill recently retired and anointed her as his successor. Here, Samantha shares what she’s learned over the last two decades about how to outperform by thinking differently and developing a behavioral edge.
    IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL LEARN:
How Samantha McLemore & Bill Miller met when she was an undergraduate.
How an insurance settlement from a dog bite sparked her interest in investing.
What it was like being with Bill as the market crashed after 9/11.
Why Samantha & Bill get excited in times of fear, pessimism, and panic.
Why Bill & Samantha are betting on Bitcoin despite Warren Buffett’s fierce skepticism.
What Samantha looks for when investing in promising early-stage companies.
Why it’s critical to focus on valuations, regardless of how good a company may be.
What she’s learned from spending time with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
How the global financial crisis almost led her to quit the investment business.
What’s helped her to handle the stress and pressure of investing.
Why it’s smart to be a long-term bull about US stocks while also diversifying globally.
How Samantha invests her own money.
How she manages her time as a fund manager and mother of three young kids.
What Peter Lynch said about the necessity of always being “in overdrive.”
Why Samantha likes to invest in companies run by women.
How Fidelity’s female customers outperformed its male customers by trading less.

This interview with Samantha is just so underrated. Both William and Samantha brought so much insights to the thought process behind Bill's investment decisions. As usual, William is an excellent interviewer and story teller.

Another wonderful interview by William! I used to think Bill Miller as momentum investor, not value investor. Through your interview with him and Samantha, I knew I was wrong. Need to learn a lot from them. Thank you very much!

Just a quick question, I remember right before COVID a series of circuit breaks(in Brazil at least) caused by a big drop in petroleum prices! Or I am dreaming! I juts past the [01:17:00] and they were talking about stoicism, which I am very found of, and the situation just popped in my head!

Bill sounds like a great guy. You can truly tell the intelligence of a person if they’re able to communicate with all walks of life, including absolute idiots lol. Not that anybody in this conversation or anybody mentioned is I’m just saying I wish everybody had that talent.

IMO, Bill Miller is one of the most overrated managers in history. I have tracked the performance of his various funds/entities from 1983 to 2022. His CAGR is 11.0% vs. 11.2% for the S&P 500 Index. The std. deviation of his return is 24.7% vs. 16.8% for the S&P 500 Index. Below average returns and above average risk are not the characteristics of a good manager.

Summer 2007 highs $100 investment now:
    1.QQQ $660 afer -12$ cost
    2.SPY $327 after -4$ cost
3.LMOPX (Miller Opportunity Trust) $94 after -45$ cost
Powerful bounce will come, as always, yet clients seem to be happy, successful people
regardless. In the end it is all about our perception. Thank you.
