    My mother has had one of these KYMCO Agility 50 for probably a decade. When I was home, or somewhere in the neighbourhood, every time that I heard the sound of it approaching from far away, I knew it was mum... Everytime I hear the sound of this scooter, I feel so sad because I miss those times, I miss my mother...

    For years I rode a Honda Zoomer to work and back through the center of Amsterdam. It was pretty crazy, I would get tailgated, pushed out of my lane, etc. etc.. I got sick of it and switched my variator and exhaust, so I managed to do 40 mph... it's a small speed difference, but it was enough to keep up with traffic and claim my space on the road. A huge difference in safety!

    Very cool, and a good reminder of why power is your friend.
    I used to own a Peugeot Speedfight 50cc 2 stroke. it was a great little scooter, but it was better and SAFER to ride after I took the restriction plate out of the variator, changed the rollers to sliders of a different weight, and cut the restricting pipe off the exhaust. Top end increased from 55 kph to 85 kph, with much quicker acceleration to boot. The restrictions on these scooters cause them to be unsafe to ride.

    its about time they drop the 30 mph restriction and let them do road speed or cap them at say 45 mph and then they would be a lot safer to ride with out been too fast

    Totally agree about the danger aspect of being restricted to 30 mph. It makes the rider feel like they have to ride more in the gutter so people can get past, and creates the driver behind to think shall I, shan't I overtake?
    I live in Lincolnshire and kids bomb about on these in twisty 60 mph B roads which are still really narrow. Used to ride a TS 50 ER myself back in the day so remember it well. Eee they were the days!
    Really enjoy your channel and your words of wisdom.

    I had an Agility 125. I was ripped off when I bought it, but they're good. Spares are crazy cheap. I had to get the clutch, front forks, electric controls and tyre replaced, which cost me around £250, including labour. The 125 easily did 60/65, which is about right for what I needed, and when I sold it a couple of weeks ago the guys who came for it were really surprised at its speed and acceleration. Great little things really

    It didn't take long before the restrictor plates were out of my little Peugeot I had when I was 16, taking it on a dual carriageway to school was ridiculous at 30mph!
    Soon had it sitting at 55-60mph after a few mods though =)

    Totally agree with you, on todays roads a 30mph restriction puts young people who are new on the road (and likely to have only done a CBT) in danger. As soon as my brother turned 17 I had him off the 50cc scooter and on to a YBR125!

    Having owned a 50cc Supermoto, I know exactly how a 16 year old would feel. It was my main mode of transport I used everyday. Wasn't so keen on the faster roads as part of my daily commute but apart from that it was an absolute joy to ride. I did feel vulnerable when cars are tying to overtake me or coming out of corners fast from behind. I do agree they should raise the limit to 40mph to reduce the risk.

    Thanks for this video. I've been riding a Kymco Agility 50(Derestricted) in the States since I was 16. I'm about to turn 19 and am upgrading to a sportbike and your videos have been very helpful for learning more before I buy another bike.
    I think you're exactly right about the speed problem, I think it's probably more dangerous to ride a bike that's slower than the rest of traffic than an actual motorcycle(Do you concur?). I can go 40MPH, but even in a 35mph zone people are not happy to be behind me.

    Totally agree with the point you're making about the speed restrictions. I was lucky enough to get my scooter at 17 and have it de restricted. Still get people trying to pass me in 40 zones when I'm doing the speed limit, very stressful for a new rider. Even so I think scooters are the way to go for learning to ride. Even if it's only temporary. The basic controls allow more focus on the road to learn the conditions etc. Also they're alot of fun! My Lifan 50cc 2 Stroke (think it's a 125 size scooter with a 50cc engine as it's much larger than any other 50s I've seen) is awesome to ride. Learnt alot about being on the road in the last year and a half on it. Feel much more confident about moving to a 125cc now.

    Not wrong, anything limited to 30 when a lot of the roads outside town are 40 & 50 is dangerous to both them and those around them.

    This is exactly the same scooter as what I got when I was 16, absolutely rock solid little thing. Had a problem with the battery, replaced that and it never skipped a beat. Only died when someone decided to nick it and proceeded to try and setting it on fire.
    I do agree though that it's far too dangerous to ride at 30MPH, as soon as you're able to get a 125cc or larger, do it.

    I had one. my mom was nice enough to buy me one brand new when i was 16 (2009) Didnt have my license yet so couldnt get a car. I had some fun times with that thing. It stopped running though like 2 years after cause i think we tried to unrestrict it or something & it just never started again. Sold it back in 2015 for like $80 cause i was a drug addict. I still regret it so so much. I know it wouldnt have taken much to get it running. We just never really tried because i got my license at 18 & a car.

    I have a Gilera Runner SP50 derestricted and it's nice to be able to keep up with the traffic. Mine will do 90km/h but I don't push it there, 70-80km/h is fine to go along with the traffic. Hoping to jump on a SV650 pretty soon, I love that bike :)
    Thanks for your vids, very informative. Subbed, great channel!

    never understood why Government has kept 50CC mopeds stuck at 28mph at 16, it is dangerous for 16 year olds, especially those who live in rural areas/smaller areas, who may have to go to college/work on 40-60mph roads, they should at least allow 40mph on them

  • @SpinyBiker
    @SpinyBiker 10 років тому

    I understand totally what you are saying. I have a 125 step through scooter for my commute, rather than using my big bike as all the roads are either 30 or 40mph, but even then going at the speed limits I feel more vulnerable on a little scooter because you still get cars on your rear wheel. So can just image the feeling on a 40 road being restricted to 30. Not nice and people these days are in a rush to get everywhere and just notice things until it's too late.

    i do believe the law is a little backward. bikes are limited bhp due to age and experience. Yet. a 17 year old can buy any car once a driving practical has been passed ? if you loose control of a bike main person hurt mostly will be the rider. if a car looses control .. well alot more people can get hurt, little backwards i feel

      +Chris Ackerman I agree with you, but a counter argument is bikes are a lot cheaper than cars. It's a lot more difficult for a young person to buy a sports car compared to a sports bike. I think a better system would be 16-18

    I completely agree, doing 30mph on a duel carriageway is the reason why I only have the use of one arm. Very small moped + very big wagon = hiding 50cc moped. I hate the unstable blooming things lol
    IMO they are very dangerous machines I don't know anyone who hasn't kissed the tarmac with one of them.
    They should be built bigger and able to do at least 40mph.

    So..Hello ;-)
    Mate, it's a Scary thing.
    I did the 50cc long...LONG before I passed. It's a terrible thing and I hated it so much. At least, after the initial 'wow' had worn off!
    I actually had a nasty...I was young and stupid but I was trying to 'do the right thing' and keep up and stuff. It was wrong of me!
    My Fault though (young) ;-)
    Law makers... I think it's a case of "You're young, you have no idea and we know best"
    It's a troubling thing though. 16 years old, let them have a 125. 75 mph...Hmm.
    Maybe, just maybe make bikes 18 year olds +...Yes, I would have hated that on my old Suzuki 120.
    Basically!! As you can gather from this comment, I have NO IDEA what is best for today :-)

    Had a geared 50 2 years ago - genuinely dangerous restricted! When you're allowed on 70mph roads, it's so dangerous to be doing 40% of the speed limit, no one expects you to be going that slow! Derestricted it straight away so I could actually do 50 (70% of the speed limit), still not great but so much safer as cars are only coming up behind you at 20mph, as when you're doing 30 in a 70, you're the same as a small stationary object and a car travelling towards you at 40! 16 should be unrestricted 50, 17 same at 125, 19 any bike restricted to a certain power (none of this power to weight bs) then 21 any bike, or if you do your CBT at 16, have a restricted bike at 18 then unrestricted at 20 (2 years on each). There should be an improved cbt test for 50's and 125's, a practical test and theory test for restricted bikes at 18/19, then no test to derestrict it when you turn 20/21. The same kind of restrictions should apply to car drivers, as they can hop straight into a supercar or 4x4 at 17 if they have enough money... We need more bikes on the road, and yet the government and EU just make it a bit naff for anyone that wants to get into riding... Just my opinion :)

    we have two kinds of 50 cc mopeds in sweden called class I and class II the class two is the original and the class one was introduced 2001.
    If you turned 15 before 2009 you can ride the class II mopeds without any education, lisence or test. The post 2009 generation gets to take a writen test for their lisence.
    The class I mopeds you have to take a driving test and a writen test to drive.
    Class II mopeds are limited to 1 kw motor and 15 mph and you can drive them on cycle lanes and the city streets.
    Class I mopeds are limited to 4 kw motor and 25 mph and you can only drive them on the streets.
    So there are very few mopeds that aren't derestricted and or upgraded cylinder and exhaust.

    I've always said smaller cc bikes are dangerous. They have enough power to get you into trouble but not enough to get you out of it. As for teenagers wanting to go fast, give them the proper training and restrict them to 70mph, or at least 56 to keep up with lorries. I have a lot of respect for anyone who has done time on a 50cc

    I had a 50cc @16, lasted about half a year before getting de-restricted, I preferred to feel a little safer even if I was breaking the law. Was great to have some independence at 16 and not relay on public transport or parents to get to collage and part time jobs.
    It should be 125 at 16, what suddenly changes on your 17th birthday that means you are able to handle the extra 75cc?

    thinking of trading it in for another 125. the extra power should make it less dangerous.
    also once took it down a 60 single carriagway, that was fun to say the least, even with pulling in a few times

    In Germany we have more nonsens.
    A "moped" with 25KM / 15mi. It's the same speed I use with my bicycle.
    The 50cc class does max 45km / 27mi.
    The cars can do 50km / 31mi in the city.
    So even if you have a 50cc you hold back all cars.
    So there comes all the hate.
    I hold a license to drive all bikes, but I use a 125cc scooter, which does not cost any tax, also was cheap on insurancy with 27€/year. It does max. 120km / 74mi, which is enough to ride on a freeway.

      If I had a 80cc it will be more expensive. That was bescause in the past young people with age of 16 could drive 80cc's. They had a lot of crashes. 125cc can only be driven if you have a bike license or made your driving license before(1984 I think). That's for Germany, maybe in your country it is different. And be sure to check all insurance companies. Here I can also pay four times the cost if I choose the wrong company.

    50cc scooters are dangerous. i've been riding one for a year (here in australia you need to have your car licence for a year before you can do a motorbike test) you hold up traffic, can't go up hills, can't get out of dangerous situations because you have no power. so glad i'm off one now. but everyone should experience riding a 50. they'll appreciate their cars/bikes a lot more.

    50cc's are simply dangerously slow restricted in the UK leading to ppl being bullied to the side of the road and cars pushing past in stupid places!

  • @lmaoroflcopter
    @lmaoroflcopter 10 років тому

    For the sake of waiting 1 year. They should just remove the P category all together.
    That said, I've met irresponsible 50 year olds so how the government can say a 16 year old may only ride a 50cc at 29mph but a 17 year old is responsible enough to ride a 125 at 60+ is ridiculous.

    • @theenglishbiker8293
      @theenglishbiker8293 9 років тому

      As soon as you're 17 even on a CBT you may ride one of these de-restricted providing you tell your insurance... however this changes the classification of the motorcycle from "Moped" to "Light motorcycle" so a 16 year old may not ride it as they can only ride bikes under the "moped" classification.

    30MPH in a cycle lane ?
    We already have stupid idiots on carbon bikes chasing Strava segments on shared paths.
    So please don't remind me that I can expect more and more numpties on electric bikes.
    Even a fairly strong rider like myself struggles to maintain 15MPH on the flat for any distance.
    The average speed of a bicycle is 10MPH.
    If you want to use our facilities, lose the engine.
    In any case, most "cycle lanes" aren't fit for their claimed purpose.

    • @tobortine
      @tobortine 10 років тому

      I entirely agree, you'd simply be reversing the problem. De-restrict them if it's dangerous for them to be this slow.

    • @SumoTrolls
      @SumoTrolls 10 років тому +2

      well here in belgium and holland they are permitted or forced (depending on the situation) to use the cycle path and it works perfectly fine
      but than agian here we have alot more, wider and beter made than in the uk

    • @mikebreen2890
      @mikebreen2890 9 років тому

      Perfectly fine my ass. The cycle lanes, shared with small motorcycles and often pedestrians as well are bloody dangerous. I fact when it comes to road safety, Belgium is about the last place we need to look to for good examples, unless you want good examples of how not to do it.

    • @SumoTrolls
      @SumoTrolls 9 років тому +1

      Mike Breen it does work wel,
      shure if you ride an unrestricted moped you're gonna be better of on the road.
      however if a moped does the max speed of 45km/h or 28 mph (as the law says) or even slower,
      its not dangerous.
      (with the exception of riding in town than its better to ride on the road because, as you said cyclepaths are often shared with pedestrians)

  • @mikebreen2890
    @mikebreen2890 9 років тому

    If you want to use the cycle lane, 30MPH is far too fast. In countries where it is allowed, the limit is about 20MPH. You can then expect huge amounts of Police time to be wasted trying to Police the bloody noisy things because every man (boy!) and his dog de-restricts them.

    • @MRFUCKOFF202
      @MRFUCKOFF202 9 років тому

      Why? It's too fast in a city centre but not roads like in the video. Cyclists frequently get up to 30-50mph and don't get stopped.

    Are all of these Kymco Agility 50's restricted? And how can I tell if one is?

    • @TheDox451
      @TheDox451 8 років тому

      Every 50cc scooter is limited to 50kph (30mph) by law. You can unrestrict it yourself, but it wont pass MOT (yearly inspection) then. Sometimes even the dealer will unrestrict them for you if you want it. In my opinion, just get a bigger bike, its not worth unrestricting them and driving these tiny things on speeds they arent designed for.

      @@TheDox451well I use to have this kymco agility 50 and recently got an Rx50 wolf. I didn’t need to get a motorcycle licence and the bike gets up to 35mph. They have it derestricted right from start

  • @blackwhirlwind1245
    @blackwhirlwind1245 9 місяців тому

    it's ridiculous that it has to be restricted to 30mph, a class 3 ebike can go 28 mph, if you are restricted to 30mph on 50cc scooter, then t's better to just get an ebike to go 28mph. The scooter/moped law needs to change. 45MPH should be the max for these scooter/moped. They want these scooters to be driven on the same road as all the cars, SUVs, and trucks, but they also want them to be way slower than all these cars, SUVs, and trucks., totally bullshit.
