I am barely fixing to start some classes in tax preparation and the school I am attending wants me to get my ptin number before I start, but the Irs is requesting a Business name and mailing address to that business when applying for a ptin number, but I haven't even started thinking that far ahead yet. What am I supposed to do? Just use my first and last name in Lieu of a business name? If I do that then once I decide on a name can I change it?
Hi Rhonda, congratulations on your new journey! In box 5a there is a box to check if your business address is the same as your personal mailing address. Box 5b gives the option to check "yes" or "no" to the following question: Are you self-employed or an owner, partner, or officer of a tax return preparation business. If you do not have a business yet, then you would check no and proceed to the next box as instructed on the application.

That is perfectly fine, Maria! It is common for businesses to use separate providers for their bookkeeping and tax preparation. As a bookkeeping firm you would simply prepare your client’s year-end tax documents and then refer them to an accountant or tax preparer for their tax preparation.
