Hey Andy, I can't believe it, a friend just gave me the same bike! It's been sitting in his basement barely used for ten years. I love it, rides like a dream. Thanks for leading the way.
@@hobocyclist the years of excellent entertainment are well worth a contribution, not to mention the reality check of what's important in life. You've helped rekindle my love of cycling. This bike just made it way more fun! And I was already a hobo recycler so what better way to go. Future mods, fat bmx tires, front rack, and the deltec cable. I'm sure I can do that upgrade to make the bike so much stronger. I'll keep you posted. Cheers!
Great tip. My bike shop say inner tubes (I think that’s what you’re using) are currently not recyclable), so I will be using my future ones for this until I hear otherwise. This is recycling. At the moment I use bungees, but they do wear out, so hopefully my next wrecked inner tube will coincide with me running out of bungees.
Great advice. I feel dumb for throwing away old tubes instead of turning them into awesome stretchy cargo straps. I use a small bag of rubber bands to serve as light mountfor handlebars. With the bag of bands in between the light and handlebar, 4 or 5 bands attachs that light securely for rough roads but can also be rotated by hand very easily. I love versatile tools like rubber bands, string, tape, cardboard. We take them for granted but they're really amazing.
Glad I found you channel, I just started commuting to uni and carrying heavy textbooks on a bike has been a learning curve, this video is super helpful, thank you 😁
I'm glad I just found your channel, I really enjoy watching your videos, inspiring and helpful. Thanks!! I'll save the tyre and try next time. Cheers!!
Great tips. Can you do a video on what sort of saddle you go for on distance rides on your folder. Just bought a cheap folder myself and looking at saddles, but too many to choose from and dont want to buy one thats no good. I know its a personal thing, but advice would be appreciated.
Cheers. I’d recommend upgrading seat if it is not comfortable for you. Check out this video, it shows how I got the seat I use & what kind ua-cam.com/video/bXG07liqQ4s/v-deo.html
I'm going to try to make bike racks from hardwood sucker shoots. They're lightweight and flexible but still strong, like bamboo. I'm not sure how to attach stuff to the frame, thinking maybe just tie it tight with these bands and gorilla tape. I had a rear battery rack fornan ebike conversion kit crack on my first long ride on dirt roads. Electrical tape help it together for years of use no problem.
Great work. I've just inherited a old Bickerton folding bike that was kept in a shed unused for years. All serviced and ridable now. Do you know where to buy small racks for the bike? Any help appreciated. Thanks
Cool! Im using second hand parts from other bikes to set up my folding bike with racks, i have used this front rack in the past amzn.to/3Pp1pA5 but it did require some modification - I have a video about it on my channel. This rear rack might fit, amzn.to/3Z9DOqz - but im unsure of the dimensions of bickerton bikes so do check the measurements. All the best for your project!
I've tried this and it works well. However, I found that it made my hands black from messing with the tube strips. In your experience, does that go away after a while or is that just part of hobocycling?
The issue I ran into with bungie straps is that they don't provide enough friction on the bag I was trying to mount to my rack. Just giving it the jostle test in the garage, it seemed like the nylon would just slide right off the shiny metal even if i used multiple bungie cords. The inner tube really held everything in place tho. But use whatever is best in your particular use case. I'm just saying that bungies aren't always better/best.
How do you avoid saddle sores? Find that these more up-right city bikes are terrible on your a**, especially for touring. Some tips on that would be great.
On my Japan tour (2 months) I had issue but not since. I adjust seat height & swap out saddle for more comfortable gel seat. Adjust riding position, handlebar position may also help. Take breaks, adjust, ride, stop and adjust until you find the right comfort level
Very good advice on the innertube straps. 😷👍I've been strapping pizzas down with them recently. I enjoyed seeing all of the loadout configurations. I've recently found out how to make real money with my bike and it's really been a blast. I'm using a motorized bicycle , so simple a cave man could do it , to take money from a major corporation. it almost feels like stealing. 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers! Ive strapped large boxes of beer to the bike this way good test for how much weight it can hold. rubber works well for all kinds of things, even light construction & fixing stuff... make money by riding? sounds like a sales pitch for the premium tier!

You are truly a realistic traveler. This is travel with the bare necessities. Bravo!
thanks! I want to get out & do it, without spending a lot of money.
You have really inspired me to go bike packing with my new second hand folder too.

Yup thats the way re use, re imagine everything too good to throw away!
Such a great idea to reuse inner tubes! I'll be trying this out at the weekend on a 3 day tour of the Yorkshire Dales! Cheers 🇬🇧
Good on you mate! Enjoy the ride!!!
I love your approach of minimalism and recycling. Tnx Andy.

Thanks for the tip on using inner tubes as bungee cords.
Good solid information,no frills no fuss, excellent 👍

Fantastic, Iove a cheapskate solution. I will be using this.
Thanks for this great video. That is a great use of popped tires.
I will try it on my next adventure! Thanks!!!

Yeah I get dirty. Never had black stuff get on my hands from the rubber. U could wash it or try another inner tube, they will break down over time
You're my Handyman thank YOU🤞
Another good one, Andy!
Thanks for watching!
@@hobocyclist Cheers!
That's a really useful idea 👍
Cheers mate!
when you will start the next trip?
when i get enough money for a plane ticket. its winter down here now
Do you ever have problems untying the straps?
Trick is not to tie it tight. 1 half hitch will hold it under tension. I only tie it super tight if I’m travelling over uneven ground
What a about the suitcase in the thumbnail?
I think adjustable bungie straps work better. All kinds of lengths you can get too.
Ill be continuing the zero dollar approach, using tyre rubber! :)
