I really appreciate that you compare these free A.I. tools. There are so many A.I. tools out there for graphic design user, but none compare them for the best result like you did.
I was all for Upscayl, then you mentioned the line,… which has been mentioned in other comparison videos too. So I discarded Upscayl from my mind, and was feeling Pixelcut all the way. Then you redeemed Upscayl in the end, making it a great teaching moment. I’m going to use both, depending on the device I am on. And THANK YOU for showing a comparison with Photoshop. I was really curious why no one was using editing tools like Photoshop or Affinity Photo to upscale. You are the first one I’ve seen include this. Thank you! Would be interesting to see if these upscalers can improve Photoshop's Generative Fill, seeing as the generated content is quite low-res. Thanks for the heads up on these upscalers, Unmesh!
Generative fill is still maxed out on 1024x1024 tiles. So you have to make those fills tile for tile to achieve best quality. And often it's an scaling issue, sometimes scaling an image down to its best detail or sharpness point, can archive better outputs.

Upscayl is amazing. I've been using it to upscale textures from an old PSP game. I then take them into photoshop to tweak a bit more.

But the average file size after upscaled is above 500mb

The lines that upscayl creates sometimes depends on different models and compression used in the source photo

I've been using Upscayle for a while. Although it's great, it does tend to smoothen certain areas out and increase the contrast for a perceived increase in quality. Overlaying it with the original image can help a bit. For free, Upscayle is by far the best. Most computers up to 3 years old will do it with no problem. Thanks as always. 👍

I ' ve done that and Topaz is so much better. I used it on old black and white photo which was in a very low resolution. Topaz was more accurate and you still have the option of face recovering (which is adjustable). After the comparison I uninstalled upscayl since I won't use it when I have the option of Topaz.

Great video! There is another tool called Chainner that's designed for batch compositing with nodes, and allows to do the same upscale things as Upscayl with whatever model you download from hugging face :3 and it's free and open source !

Instead of waiting 140minutes, i just use Replicate to upscale. Its amazing. It is using the exact same upscaler as dgb, but with wait time of 3 seconds (in my experience at least). Same product, but better experience, limits were so big, that i dont think about them. Upscayl and Replicate win it for me. No doubt. At least for free versions
Yeah but their servers are too much clogged now, most models run out of memory. I mostly use "jingyunliang-swinir"

Excelent video. One important thing for Mac users for Upscayl, there's only available for MacOS 11, if you have Mac OS 10 won't work so you got to use the cloud version of it, which is in beta right now.

Hey Unmesh - THANK YOU!! I had a low res photo (video capture) of a friend that has passed that I wanted to upsize and print for the family. I had tried GIMP, but it was still blurry. Upscayl was awesome! I tried several options, but the 4x ultrasharp worked best for me. I've had an 8x10 printed and framed and will give it to the family.

As a drawing book editor I use Upscayl very often and it is very usefull for batch processing, and very fast.
Great vid. Thank you. I have been using Upscayl but when I batch 300 dpi files it knocks it down to 72 dpi. Need them to be 300 dpi. What am I missing?

Great and informative video. Thanks Unmesh. As a matter of comparison, I used some Polo images shot 2010 with a D7000 with a Fujifilm s100fs. In December I often get requests from spouses of the players, for very enlarged and framed photos of the player scoring a goal or making a dramatic check, etc. Often the player is way downfield from where I am and takes up 10% or less of the frame, so when I crop in the resolution is severely reduced. I used to do multi-step enlargements in PS, but since I got Topaz Photo Ai, I use that now. I just ran comparisons using Topaz and Upscayl. Even with Upscayl delivering images of 15,000+ px on the long side, it couldn't compete with what I got from Topaz at 6000px on the long side. That, coupled with Upscayl not running as a plugin for LR, made up my mind to just stick with Topaz Photo Ai. If I didn't have Topaz, Upscayl would be helpful though.
That said ...something has gone very wrong with Topaz Photo Ai on the last several releases On Autopilot, with noise set to low and above, it is completely failing to recognize noise on many very noisy scanned images or camera digitized images from slides. If I click the toggle to reduce it, it does a wonderful job. What this means is that batch processing is no longer possible in Topaz Photo Ai, and that's a real pain in the posterior region!
