How Linux Respects Your Privacy (And How Windows Does NOT!)

  • I often claim that Linux is better for privacy than proprietary operating systems like Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, Android, iOS, etc. Usually, I talk about the things that are hidden from view, like the spyware and keyloggers that Windows secretly uses. Today though, I'm going to talk about easy-to-see, tangible benefits of using Linux if you are concerned about privacy.

Linux can do that too at times as well. Just not intentionally. E.g. Linux Mint Update Manager recently had a bug that enabled automatic updates without user's doing anything. And so their apt packages started to update without the user's knowledge.
Accidents happen, and it was fixed within the same day. I'm just highlighting this because its dangerous to just blanket statement say "This doesn't happen on Linux". I've not used Windows for a good while and agree with this video, but we still need to be careful and aware about what is going on with Linux, rather than just blindly trusting everything.

I completely replaced Windows with Linux back in late 1995 and have never looked back. I actually blame MS for holding back the industry decades from what it could have been (mostly because of IE), but my bitterness aside, I'm super happy that DT is still working hard to bring people over to a better place, and having tangible results! Keep it up, dude!

I am no fan of Microsoft, I rid myself of my Microsoft abuser when support for Windows 7 ended and no longer allow their crappy products into my home or life.
But in what way have they "held back the industry"? I would argue that their "marketing speak" and lies about Windows did ultimately get PCs into every home. So I really don't understand your point here.

    • @pdr.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 Look up the Microsoft antitrust cases. Time and time again they used underhanded tactics to retain their monopoly, and not have to compete based on technical merit. Without MS, open file formats would have flourished in the 90s and yet that's still an ongoing struggle, competing OSes (not just Linux, but OS/2, BeOS, even AmigaOS and MacOS) may have thrived, and JavaScript in 2000 would have had a chance to advance already to where we are today. The type of underhanded tactics used were particularly nefarious, but often too technical to be understood by most people, like having two sets of APIs for Windows, the public one, which would change behaviour between releases, and the private stable one that was used by its own products, like Office. For example, they made deals with hardware retailers making it impossible to buy a PC without also paying MS for software you weren't even going to use.

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 2 роки тому +2

@@pdr. I don't do homework that you set me. Plus I am old enough to remember the antitrust cases very clearly, but they prove nothing that furthers the argument you are making. So let's try and stay on topic here.
You said "I actually blame MS for holding back the industry" and I said explain that point. They may have done so using nefarious means and/or as a monopoly, but that is not the argument here.
Microsoft got "a PC into every home", that we have to agree on. You're saying that Microsoft held the computer industry back, so I am saying how would that be better now then? What would have happened by now that would have been better were it not for Microsoft?
Just so you know my credentials here - I have been a techie in the computer industry for 40 years now, I started programming machine code on Z80 CPUs back in 1982. Since that time I've gone through various UNIX flavours (SCO, Solaris, HP-UX, Linux), I've even worked on DEC PDP-11s driving agent "screen pops" in some of the earliest call centres. I was also a big Amiga user back in the day too and used it to connect to the first BBSes and even used an A1200 running iBrowse back around 1993 on dial-up Internet. I've used and deployed Microsoft products from MS-DOS through to Windows 7 when I finally rid myself of their rubbish. I started using Linux back in 1997 now, Gentoo Linux is my main OS at home and I've built, administered and hardened Red Hat Linux telecoms servers for the past 2O years.
Now we've established my credentials, let's look at some computing history. Yes, it looked as though at one point that Commodore and Atari might have seized control of the home computer market but there was two much in-fighting between the two companies (Jack Tramiel) and whilst Commodore had brilliant hardware engineers working for them, they had terrible sales and marketing people - that was despite Microsoft and, quite frankly, neither company knew what it wanted to be anyway. Had Bill Gates existed without Microsoft, maybe he'd have just moved in to head Commodore and turned them into the "next Microsoft" anyway, it was the Commodore leadership that made them fail.
In the absence of Gates, in all likelihood, the next successors to the "home computer throne" might have been IBM with OS/2 because by not having to "jump into bed" with Microsoft by putting DOS and Windows on all PCs they sold, then OS/2 may have come to the forefront as the next consumer OS. Yes, it was advanced for what is was but Microsoft came out with Windows NT anyway that occupied the business IT server space for decades anyway, until most of it went Cloud. OS/2 was seen as vastly superior to MS-DOS and early Windows but NT was clearly seen as at least its equal in its early days.
I don't see that a rise of OS/2 would have been any different in terms of "one OS monopoly" and therefore Linux would have probably happened anyway.
In other words, IBM would probably have filled any vacuum created by the non-existence of Microsoft - back then, IBM was a big and lumbering computer giant, Microsoft was a lot more "quick and nimble", I think computing would have fallen behind where they are today had IBM been at the helm.
Once again, let me be clear on this - this in no way is a defence of Microsoft on my part, this is purely an investigation of where things might have been in their absence.
And I still think you're wrong - we wouldn't be as advanced as we are today without Microsoft, much as I hate to admit it.

Shortly afterwards, I ditched Arch on my personal laptop for OpenBSD precisely because of its privacy and security focus; it's more oriented towards server implementations but it also shines as a dedicated internet browsing OS on a separate physical machine. From the outside and once you're fully accustomed to it, it's nearly indistinguishable from something like Gentoo or Slackware.

Its scary how much data corporations collect on their users. It was really eye opening for me when Microsoft decided to make it mandatory to have a Microsoft account in order to use Windows. Your operating system should never have to be tied to the internet in order to work. When I learned of the mandatory online accounts with Windows 11 I decided it was time to give Linux a try. I've been using GNU/Linux for about 3 months now and I've had a fantastic experience. I don't ever plan on moving back to Windows. Fun fact I was doing some research and it turns out Windows 10 sends telemetry data to over 10,000 Microsoft APIs. That is down right scary.

I'm 100% a Gentoo Linux user and I run it on "any old cr*p" when it comes to computing devices - the only hardware that I buy new is storage and I gave up on AAA games about 10 years ago because I am not participating in "games as a service" for overpriced, buggy, derivative and DLC-ridden crap being churned out by games companies - I therefore don't buy many graphics cards either.
One thing I have noticed recently on eBay is the prevalence of really cheap 4GB DDR3 and DDR4 memory DIMMs and SODIMMs being sold by many, many people. This is at the time when "normies" are being encouraged (forced?) to upgrade to Windows 11.
As most PCs have two memory slots in them, the assumption therefore is that even 8GB RAM is now not enough for a Windows PC - hence people selling old 4GB modules to upgrade them to 8GB (or bigger) ones. Windows "experts" that I have spoken to have told me 16GB RAM is the practical minimum RAM on a Windows PC now if you then take into account games and heavier applications running on top of it.
By comparison, even the heaviest Linux OS probably only ever demands around 1.5GB RAM before you start running anything else, an extremely light desktop that still has a few network services running in background can run in about 200MB.
If a Windows OS needs that much RAM even before you do anything else with it, then there is some "spooky sh1t" going on in the background in terms of rifling through the contents of your PC and reporting it all back to Microsoft.
Note also that the "success" of Windows Defender as a malware defence tool on WIndows is specifically down to "the Microsoft hive mind". That application is in constant communication with Microsoft Central sending file signatures back and forth in order to build up malware databases extremely quickly. Ultimately, Windows Defender is a case of "the more it does for your security, the less it does for your privacy" as it gives itself full access to all of the files on your computer.
Normies really should be taking more notice of this nonsense.

If you’re working with a AMD Radeon graphics-card you’re not gonna have any problems in Linux with the graphics-card because AMD (at-least currently) works with the Linux-kernel developers to implement the drivers of the AMD Radeon graphics-cards into the Linux kernel.
      Also:
      Regarding the proprietary applications:
I dunno what are the particular proprietary-applications that you are trying to use inside Linux but here’s a piece of advice:
I’ve noticed that alot of people are expecting that a piece-of-software that was *not* written for Linux to work perfectly/a-ok/👌 in Linux and it just doesn’t work that way.
Same as how I cannot expect the “Oregon Trail” computer-game that I used in the “Power Mac” computers in the computer-lab in my Elementary school to work in the “AST Advantage!” tower-computer that has Windows-95 in it that I have back at home.
The software needs to be written for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and/or Macintosh-OS, respectively, in order for it to work in Windows, Linux, and/or Macintosh-OS respectively.

Win11 is literally the end for me and Microsoft and TPM2 and this stuff is getting scary. I deactivated it via BIOS but in the end there is a BIOS which tells me it is off .. with Win11 you need to have it activated to boot that OS .. Gee!

4:00 This was one of the reasons I (used to) recommend Ubuntu to a lot of newcomers: If you don't want to futz around with your PC - which is your prerogative, maybe you're a busy person and can't spare the time to set-up a perfect kernel for your specific hardware, that's fair - then a "standard" Linux installation will probably leave you with a machine that can do internet, office, email and printing out-of-the-box, and that's a really compelling argument nowadays where even casual users of Windows trip over so many, stupid, little road blocks.
Point in case: My grandma (god love her) kept breaking her macbooks by dropping them or whatever, and it started to wear on her budget (she _could_ afford it, but it was a bit of a drag, y'know, "dang, I'd rather break something not-so-expensive" kinda thing) so with 82, I set her up with a cheap Ubuntu laptop, and since all she did on it was read or watch the news, email her friends and family, and play solitaire, she had hardly any problems (apart from the usual "where's the safari?" - "No, grandma, click the firefox logo down there" - "I just want the New York Post back!" - "Ok wait a sec, I'll change the icon and name for you…🙄", y'know, the same old people problems she had switching from one macOS version to the next xD)

Don't get me wrong, I am a power linux user and I don't respect policy of evil corporations.
But it seems to me that dt either forgets many details or he is trying to exaggerate.
    1. Privacy settings are everywhere
    2. Linux is not 100% good and clean, especially in some main stream distros.
    3. MacOS and windows allow to encrypt drives.
    4. Not that much of trial ware.
Yes, windows and macOS provide a lot of junk that I cannot even deleted but they do not force me to buy more than os for comfortable use.
    5. There are telemetry settings in macOS and windows(at the install screen and in the settings).
The reason why I am still user of all OSes - compatibility of windows software and the power of MacBook hardware.
But a couple of days ago, I spent over 40 hours to set up linux gaming - I was amazed... not native games were running as I would never see on windows.

Ok the encryption point is poorly presented and doesn't reflect the security model the encryption intends to uphold.
Assuming he's referring to full disk encryption at the install stage, doesn't Windows still have BitLocker and Apple have FileVault? Also, full disk encryption only protects you when the computer is powered off. If you've logged in - and can see all your content - then any developer with some spyware will be able toe see the same thing, because the encrypted volume - the whole disk - is unlocked.
What DT is referring to where you could protect data while the computer in use would be encrypted containers and/or disk images. Again, pretty sure that's a provided feature of MacOS (don't know about Windows).
A better argument here would have been that you can feel more confident that the open source encryption doesn't have any back doors, which can't be verified with proprietary software.

Another issue with Microsoft Accounts is that, as I understand it, Microsoft stores the BIOS key (?) to your computer on their server, which means that if you're locked out of your computer, you have to ask Microsoft for permission to use your computer. Their software is locking down your computer so that you can only install Microsoft approved software on it, so it's not just privacy in terms of keyloggers and spyware.

I have some friends who would dismiss everything you just said with "well I use windows 10 ameliorated (or similar), it has all spyware and bloatware ripped out, I have full privacy". For me the biggest concern is the security of these builds and tools. You have to trust the iso or tool to not have shady Russian malware of its own included, and common changes can be dangerous for your security (such as disabling Windows Update or Windows Defender). It's hard to get across how important security updates can be and how using these hacks is not a good option if you care at all about security and privacy from hackers.

Also if you have debloated windows yourself before you just know how inviable it is for the longevity of your system so the features they claim are suspicious. I use "The Pizza Argument" when friends or colleagues suggest the same thing to me.
I don't like olives. So when I call the pizza restaurant to deliver me a pizza I tell them "please leave off the olives". What I don't do is say nothing, wait until the pizza is delivered and then pick off the olives one-by-one to the make the pizza edible for me.
The pizza argument applies to installing an OS you know to be untrustworthy and then fiddling around with it afterwards to try and get some trust in it.
The fact is that you just need to look on eBay to see the huge numbers of 4GB DDR3 and DDR4 RAM modules being sold on there. The reason for that is that most computers today have two RAM slots and therefore, at a time when Windows 11 is being rolled out, many people have decided that 8GB of RAM is not longer enough RAM for Windows 11 - hence they're upgrading their memory to 16GB (or more) and selling off the old stuff (which is great for me who runs Gentoo Linux on "any old cr*p" PCs and buys most of his hardware used - but I digress).
If 8GB RAM is no longer enough RAM for a base operating system, before you consider running any other applications on top of it, then that OS is doing some VERY NEFARIOUS stuff in the background to need such resources in the first place - presumably telemetry and "phoning home" a lot.
Your friends are fools - when everyone stores so much personal information on their computers, you MUST be able to trust the operating system on that computer. By their own admission, your friends don't trust Windows unless they continually spend large amounts of time fighting against its telemetry, and continually having to do so because every time Windows updates, it can choose to revert settings back.
Plus, as the other commenter here has already said, they will download hacked copies of Windows too.
All this wasted time and effort could be put to far better use just installing and learning Linux, an OS you cant trust from the moment you start running it.

I have ton of things I need to get done, and you know when something breaks it just really plummets your motivation somehow even after you fix it. It was exciting the first few months but after that it became a burden and pain in the ass to just google every little shit happen. And after all these months you might say oh how strange, you should be comfortable and be able to fix your own shit, yeah, actually no. ahem Dunning-Kruger effect, look it up. I liked the terminal and bash, but that's it, I don't have a very old PC so I don't really benefit in the performance domain of Linux, This is just my own experience and OPINION.
For the privacy, read Microsoft's privacy statement and then you can complain, even then it's a personal preference, honestly, google, facebook, twitter all invade your privacy much more than windows, it doesn't change the fact that you started using Linux, you are still a google's slave, and you still use android. I mean, unless you are abandoning all the internet then yeah.

OpenBSD has pretty much every known migitation implemented and enabled and Windows is pretty close too. Gone are also the days when everyone ran Windows as "root". By default UAC is enabled and it does pretty good job nowadays.

    Minor corrections DT:
In Android a Google account is not mandatory, Android is a FOSS product (AOSP) but phone makers like Google, xaomi makes it in such way that you need an account to finish the set-up, i use a lineage OS phone and i don't have any Google services.
In windows 10 account is not required but still it tracks you (maybe with an unique identifier IDK).

Run task manager in Windows, and pick a random running task and do a Google search on its name and the top results will almost always be "High CPU". Does every single internal Windows process have randomly occurring infinite loops? Seems pretty suspicious that it happens so often, but never to two or more things at the same time. You be the judge.

When an OS like Windows 10 needs a minimum of 8GB RAM to run efficiently before you run anything else on it, then that should be your warning sign - a base OS needing that much of a memory footprint has some SERIOUS telemetry going on in the background.
Still, it makes me happy - as someone who runs Linux on "any old cr*p" used hardware, I am loving all of the cheap 4GB DDR3 and DDR4 memory modules that I can buy on eBay these days. This is of course due to those foolish people with PCs or laptops with only two memory slots having to upgrade their memory to 16GB to run Windows 11 and therefore having to sell the old modules.

I am considering to go back to cinnamon version with my old thinkpad t430i is it really complicated? that much for people who are most of their life used to windows by complicated i mean with basic things in general like browsing the internet going on fb youtube checking e mails editing some pictures videos doing cloud based stuff

You are not required to log in with Microsoft/Gmail accounts on Windows/Android. They try really hard to make you believe you absolutely need to though. But nonetheless, you can use both systems without logging in perfectly fine. I'm not saying that'll stop Microsoft and Google from spying on you, but still. Saying that they "force you to do it" is simply not true.

Problem is that you did not use windows for a very long time and it is hard to criticised something you dont know enough of it. Yes, linux is way better than windows with privacy and a lot of others things. I use garuda btw.

2:28 If you want to avoid this, you don't give internet access during Windows installation. I had to install Windows on my grandmother's laptop, she doesn't have Microsoft account. It was the only way I came to.
Also if you want to pay as less as possible to Microsoft (or you are forced to use Windows because an app is not supported on Linux) install Windows 10 Home N. It has nothing pre-installed, no banner will appear if you don't activate this version.
