  • Recently I came across a posted on FB showing just how trash the Bose speakers are in the ND Miata and decided it's time for an upgrade! Such an easy project and total expenses were only about $120. I've linked below all the parts I used in this video!
JBL Stadium GTO 620 Speakers: amzn.to/3T5SFzA
    Metra 82-7400 Speaker Adapter: amzn.to/3PaEvvH
72-5602 Car Door Speaker Wire Harness: amzn.to/3VbCGT9
GJ6R68ABX Door Trim Panel Retainer Clips: amzn.to/3V668tG
edit I would like to add some further info that people have submitted since posting this video. Here's a good forum link regarding these speakers and more feedback from people that have done them. forum.miata.net/vb/showthread...

I believe that these are a great upgrade for spending relatively little. Here's a great comment from my FB post from Austin Perdue:
I did a speaker replacement in mine. I opted for a set of Focal PS165 FE.
The stock Bose setup is very much tuned for the stock Bose speakers. The impedance of the sub, door speakers, and tweeters are all nonstandard, and appear to be part of how the system is balanced - the tweeters for example do not have any visible low pass filters, and if you just connect aftermarket tweeters in their place, along with aftermarket 4ohm door speakers, they sound terribly out of balance. The Bose amplifier also has the equalizer adjusted to make up for dips and peaks in the stock speaker performance, and these usually don't line up with aftermarket speakers. So, others are on to something when they discuss the drawbacks of drop-in replacements.
Also, paper speakers are not necessarily bad. But, in this case, the really are cheap garbage. Mazda did a ton of engineering to make cheap speakers sound good. Spend the money once with an engineer, so you can save money a hundred thousand times in each car.
When I first did my install, I tried the Focals in place of the stock speakers, but the balance was terribly off. I spent a few days making a half dozen different low pass filters to try to get the soundstage where I wanted, but ultimately was unhappy with it, so I ended up using the filters that came with the speakers, putting them in the doors with the door speakers, and running a new, additional cable from there back through the door gromet and up to the tweeters.
I'd say there is a large improvement. There's a small loss in bass from the door speakers, but that will be the case with virtually all aftermarket speakers, due to the nature of the speakers Bose/Mazda chose. The clarity of sound is much improved, but it really brings out the boomy and muddy nature of the stock sub because 1) the sub needs to be turned up a notch to make up for the loss in bass in the doors, and 2) the $600 door speakers and tweeters are considerably less muddy than OEM.
Overall I'd say it's still worth doing. Know that if you're not careful, you're likely to mess up the soundstage, and that the Bose amplifier is going to "adjust" the sound of your new speakers in ways that are undesirable. Ideally I'd pull the Bose amp out and replace that, but the sub is a weird one and a quarter (?) ohm unit that won't run on virtually anything else, which would necessitate I replace the sub as well. The stock sub enclosure is tuned for that speaker, so I'd probably pull it out and end up losing one of the cubbies behind the seats, and that's a can of worms I'm not ready to open up at this time. The system sounds reasonably good to my ears, and better than it was, even if I know additional time and effort and money could improve it further.

I have been recommending these since I did this same mod to my ND1 back in 2017, and it's a great improvement. Personally, I wish I had also updated the subwoofer as well, since I had a softtop and could commandeer the cubbies for a couple of small subs - because the only drawback of this mod is that it highlights how crappy the stock sub sounds when compared to nice speakers. I also replaced the stock tweeters with JBL Club 750T tweeters. Routed out the screens in the a-pillar trim with a Dremel and mounted them in the holes. Also a nice improvement.

Righton, how'd the tweeters sound?? And I saw something about replacing the footwell sub as well and maybe that could balance things out. I was surprised they even added that to begin with TBH since they were so focused on weight reduction from the NC.

@@Spinnywhoosh The tweeter sounded nice and crisp and helped give me a really amazing soundstage inside the car. When I played music that had great stereo separation, I could hear it ping ponging really nicely (Joe Satriani's "Oriental Melody" was one of the test tracks that sounded amazing in there). They looked real cool also. I like them so much that I kept them and they were in my MSM, and are going to be in my NC as soon as I get some good weather. BTW... I bought a OEM sub someone tore out of a race car, but I never completed that project because it would have taken too much fabrication. Probably easier to just work a couple of 8" subs into the cubbies behind the seats.

Any thoughts on sound deadening the door? Great video. You’ll have to update on the sound quality.

Why U installed coaxial speakers in that location??? No any dampening???

Because that’s where they go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And I may go back and add deadening later.

Wonder how these compare to the 2ohm Pacos?

Hard to say but that $600+ price point really turned me off.

I figure the stock mids are what’s lacking and the power to the sub.
You can buy just the mids as I imagine the tweets are just fine and they are 300 and change

forget about the PACO. the problem lies within the bose eq and super bad power amps. If you REALLY want a BIG difference, you have to get the line level signal before the bose processing, remove the original 2 ohm poweramp and replace it with a proper poweramp. for 600$ you get all of this stuff and then you can use any speaker you want with proper 4 or 8 ohm.
So I would say, and I work in acoustics, go the JBL way if you want an improvement but not spend too much money, or go the full replacement route if you're really into acoustics.
With a good Poweramp and integrated DSP you can place a measurement mic and even save multiple settings. For driving alone, with roof open, closed, driving with a passenger. All is possible then.

Oh man, night and day! Highly recommend! I've been a fan of JBL for years TBH. Love their little portable spears so I was down to try these. Puts out good base and treble sounds a lot better!

Blose have always been kinda bad in OEM spec for Miatas. NBs were awful and an absolute bear to replace properly.

@@Spinnywhoosh it wasn't fun to do at all. 😂 My amplifier was dead and the speakers were shot, so I had to do it. However, the JBL seperated components were far superior.

Bose is in general bad in car acoustics. the use 1$ speakers and try to shape the sound with dsp. It makes them a Million $ this way because production is cheap and you just need the acoustic measurement. I even hated the bose in Porsche because you can clearly hear the DSP working. there is no soundstage, no depth. Just a lot of washy bass and low mids that cover up the highmids.
