I used to have a friend (passed away from AIDS over a decade ago) who was the first white foreigner (maybe just white person in general) to do Indonesian dance. His name was Terry Stark. This was the 1970's/80's until he stopped dancing due to an injury? Until then it was a very private affair the western world didn't really know about. The next generation of students, some of whom Terry taught/worked with, included dancer Gergye Kristian (also white) who is a top choreographer/dancer in Hungary. He would incorporate many of the hand gestures and slow pacing into his dance work, and considered story telling very important in dance (versus just movements). He was my roommate for a year. Terry once showed me some old videos of him doing a solo Indonesian dance. I'd never seen anything so graceful.

I must say, all Indonesians, throughout archipelago, in the past are indeed warriors and great sailors, even the female. Some dances show resilience and bravery to fight invaders and free their homelands. I admit, traditional dance is very hard 😅 I used to learn Balinese dance in my teen age, and it takes so much disciplines and passion toward the art of dance. I salute these dancers here. They did great job representing our incredible Indonesian culture.

Indonesia terdiri dari 17.000 pulau dan sebagian besar masih banyak pulau yang belum diberi nama dan jumlah penduduk Indonesia merupakan yang terbesar ke 4 di dunia dengan bahasa masing-masing daerah kurang lebih 700+ bahasa namun masyarakat memakai bahasa Indonesia sebagai bahasa persatuan.
