    Good example of the power of word knowledge.

      I almost put a quick thing onscreen there but I had already spent like 6 hours on the video

    What motivates a tournament to use NWL18 vs NWL20? (I'm unfamiliar with any key difference, just curious why you wouldnt always use the newest)

    • @axcertypo
      @axcertypo  8 місяців тому +5

      NWL18 contains all of the 259 slurs removed from play during the pandemic. NWL20 is about to be updated to NWL23, with thousands of new words, and around half of the slurs that were taken out will be put back in. It's all very complicated and bad for the game.

      @@axcertypo Thanks! is the choice for NWL18 motivated by tournament directors with strong opinions about which list is preferable? or is it more that tournaments like to mix things up for the sake of diversity?

      @@benmuschol1445 tournaments in North America are sanctioned by governing organizations. One of them decided to remove slurs despite the community being mostly against the process and the other decided to keep them after respecting the vote of its constituent players.

      At this point, most of the English scrabble world is fine playing without the slurs, but a few places are lagging behind or reversing course

    What do you think about N(I)QAB instead of QI to keep a less clunky rack? Too many points to sacrifice?

      the leave really isn't much better (around a couple of points) and it gives more back. I did consider it for a few seconds in-game

      @@axcertypo thanks! I think overvaluing the difference in leaves is one of my biggest weaknesses.

    Hey, thx for the video! I see the opponent's rating onscreen, but what's yours, for comparison?

      I was around 2075 at the time of this tournament

      @@axcertypo Thx. Btw: I really like this style of video. Sometimes, when you speak softly, almost whisper, it feels like I'm at the board, in your head hearing your thoughts haha! Also reminds me of the soft spoken snooker commentary from the old days (snooker fan here).

      @@johabee Much appreciated! Ever since I heard Anish Giri's style of voiceover commentary in his chess games, I've wanted to do something similar for Scrabble.

      @@axcertypoDidn't know Anish (fellow Dutchman) did commentary, and I kinda follow chess. Where does he do that? I'll check him out.

      @@johabee I don't think he's done a lot, but it might be part of a chessable course. Here's one example: ua-cam.com/video/uvmgRWs5btU/v-deo.html
